Some of the strangest English legends concern screaming skulls. Usually seen as belonging to former residents of a house, they emit horrifying screams if anyone tries to remove them or if anything unusual happens. One skull from Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire, screamed to announce the births and illnesses of farm animals and family deaths. Some robbers once stole it, but returned it after being tortured by its incessant shrieks. When a railway was being built across the house's land, the skull would allegedly undo all progress after work finished for the day. The skull was eventually appeased by an interview with the chief engineer, who promised it free passage over the line forever. Thomas Hobbes used Leviathan as a symbol of the state, which - though oppressive - justifies itself by containing people's worst instincts. Cantre'r Gwaelod is a mythical Welsh land said to lie beneath the waters of Cardigan Bay between Ramsey Island in the south and Bardsey Island in the north. The earliest known form of the legend says this fertile tract of land was lost when a maiden neglected her duties and allowed a well to overflow. Later legends say two princes were responsible for maintaining a dyke and its sluice gates. One prince, a notorious drunkard and carouser, carelessly left the floodgates open and the land was submerged. Cantre'r Gwaelod is sometimes referred to as the Welsh Atlantis. It's bells said to ring out in times of danger and people claim to have seen remnants of human habitation during extremely low tides. After a few weeks, when the corpse had decayed sufficiently to no longer interest the resurrection men, the mortsafe was removed.
