I proofread for court reporters. I have proofed AI transcripts that were so, so awful. I quit doing those jobs, even though they paid more per page, because it was grueling.
Here are some examples of the absolute gibberish I had to fix:
"I know that she had I think it was called osteo and her balls were griddle and they were braking. And that's what she first started going. They thank Clinic about."
"I think this is -- this is probably in the and they they would like post-back did what the notice was was as I said, the whooping and then they womb when he gave them they discovered all the things that were going on as well."
"And yours will say that you'd have been known to knock spray farm and they see land since the accident, correct?"
"I just said, your honor, everybody calls and placenta and Alvarado, some Barber, again, represents regard. DNA are going to say pregnant. Rarely salad." (This one was the AI transcribing an interpreter speaking Spanish.)

And I have questions. Was the problematic indenting always there, or was it introduced when it was exported to the next file format?
Could this have been prevented if the copyeditor or author had done XYZ while the manuscript was still in a Word doc? (As an editor, I want to know the answer to this question in particular.)
Did anyone notice—perhaps the proofreader? Was the matter deprioritized because the book was due at the printer?

I think I miss proofreading. I might even miss being part of a publishing team.
It's been years since I coordinated the typsetting and proofreading process for a publisher. It's been almost as long since I proofread a galley myself. Still, that part of my brain remains active.
I'll be minding my own business—reading "The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook," for example—and suddenly I'm thinking about how I'd work with the typesetter/designer to address a formatting issue.

I've been an editor and proofreader, on and off, for decades now. I've also worked as a technical author and I've been a published author for one of the most recognised "how to" book series in the world. I got some game. But at the moment, I'm training to be able to do some specialist proofing in a field that's totally new to me, and I gotta tell ya folks ... it's humbling. Right now, I SUUUUUUUCK. Big time. I feel like such a noob.
