  3. Dark is When the Devil Comes by Daisy Pearce

This is a horror novel set in the English countryside. It is about Hazel, a young woman who returns to her hometown of Idless to live with her parents while getting a divorce. Life has not been good for Hazel.

Her parents leave for a cruise, and Hazel decides it’s time to have a much-needed visit with her sister Cathy. Her sister is married with children. Hazel has never seen the youngest child. Hazel gets enough courage to call Cathy, and they set a date for the upcoming Saturday.

When Hazel doesn’t show, Cathy thinks she blew her off. Cathy is frustrated and mad but there isn’t much she can do about it. When a few days go by and no one has seen or heard from Hazel, Cathy quits being mad and becomes worried. Cathy decides it’s time to find Hazel.

The day that Hazel had called Cathy, she’d planned to go foraging for mushrooms. Hazel was an expert on mushrooms. But Hazel meets two people that day and her plans abruptly change.

The first person she runs into is Suzie, a childhood friend who is now a pharmacist. Hazel had planned to fill a prescription but is ashamed to hand it over to her friend to fill. She doesn’t want Suzie to know that she has been struggling with her mental health. She leaves without her much needed medication. The medicine that her doctor told her to make sure she never missed a dose. The one she’d run out of a few days earlier.

Hazel then meets a man who starts chatting with her. He offers her a ride, and you immediately know she should have said no. This is when the story really gets going. I will stop telling you anymore because I don’t know how to do it without spoilers.

This book is atmospheric. It makes you uncomfortable and it is deliciously hard to put down. I stayed up late a couple different nights trying to finish it. Pearce is a master at this kind of horror.

This is my first book by this author, but it won’t be the last. I won’t lie to you. There are some scenes that are a little gross but it’s not like the old slasher movies. That said, there may be some scenes that make you a little uncomfortable.
