  1. Everyone talks about winter, the cold, and the details of daily life—but no one can imagine, not even in their worst nightmares, what it means for your life—and the lives of three orphaned children and a father suffering from type 1 diabetes—to be reduced to nothing more than a scrap of fabric: a tent.
A tent offers no real shelter. When the wind shakes it, it awakens terror in the eyes of children who lost their support and sense of security far too soon. In the long, dark nights, the cold is so biting that the children’s bones freeze; in the summer, the heat scorches our paper-thin walls. My three children ask me questions far beyond their years, their eyes filled with bewilderment. I stand before them, utterly helpless—there is no warm food to sustain them, and no sense of safety to replace the father who is gone, leaving me alone to face this storm.
And that is not all. Sharing this wretched tent with us is a man suffering from type 1 diabetes. Do you know what it means to have a diabetic living in a tent? It means a daily struggle to find medicine that may not even be available; it means having no refrigerator to keep insulin cool; it means constant, dangerous fluctuations in blood sugar, driven by the crushing weight of despair, helplessness, and a cold that gnaws at his ailing body. I stand caught between orphaned children shivering from hunger and cold, and a sick man who requires a level of care that these torn, flimsy nylon walls can never provide.
We are not living; we are enduring a slow, agonizing death—all while a deaf and blind world watches and listens, yet does nothing.
God is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.
