  1. Terminally ill Australians are being assessed for voluntary assisted dying in aged care car parks. Others are being transported to hospital to die in unfamiliar surroundings — because the facility they call home has refused to allow it on site.

A new report from Go Gentle Australia finds that 66 per cent of Australian aged care providers publish no information about their stance on voluntary assisted dying. Prospective residents are told about meal plans and fees; they are not told whether they will be able to die on their own terms.

In Victoria, unlike in South Australia, Queensland, and New South Wales, there is no legal requirement to disclose this. The result is people like Rosemarie Germano, who moved into a Melbourne aged care facility with terminal cancer, asked about VAD, and was told management "doesn't support" it — with no explanation and no referral. She spent her final weeks in a hospital bed waiting for approval.

VAD is legal. These residents are eligible. What they lack is an institution that will get out of the way.

Victoria's gag clause — one excuse providers have used for silence — is being repealed. But not until April 2027. That's a long time to keep dying people in the dark.

  2. The failure in the UK on assisted dying is quite dispiriting. Thinking of what lessons there are to be learned for the process here in Ireland, we don't have the same undemocratic institutions (the Seanad for all its faults isn't the Lords) they have, & bodily autonomy has been vindicated as a concept by decades of campaigning on abortion rights, but we might still be vulnerable to social media misinformation from conservative bad actors.

  3. Congrats UK #HouseOfLords for blocking #AssistedDying Bill. 👍

I strongly support the principle of right to die, but I oppose legalisation without strong protection against #coercion. #KimLeadbeater's botched bill was opposed by every disability group. It's a scandal that her liberal supporters allowed this disgrace to pass the #HouseOfCommons.

I am unpersuaded that any safeguards could ever be adequate. But a #PrivateMembersBill will always be under-prepared.

  4. You'll have read (or heard) a lot of invective about the House of Lords role in obstructing the Assisted Dying Bill; certainly, many people are concerned that the un-elected element of our governing structure has obstructed a legal measure passed by the democratic lower house.

However, as Prof. Mark Elliott argues its not quite as simple as that (not least due to the character of the original bill).

His balanced view is worth a read.

  5. Its now clear the Assisted Dying bill has been talked out in the House of Lords & will fail to become law.

You may think this is because a small group fo Lords have sabotaged the process & essentially filibustered it into failing, or conversely they have provided scrutiny that was not fully achieved by the House of Commons...

But it now seems pretty clear the private members bill (which is not automatically carried forward to the next year) will have failed.

  7. Spain hits back at Trump in an escalating row over euthanasia.

Spain blasted the US government on Wednesday for probing a high-profile euthanasia case in Barcelona, kicking off a diplomatic rift over human rights and end-of-life laws.

Madrid is irked by the State Department’s move to investigate the assisted suicide of a 25-year-old Spanish woman.

  8. A Spanish woman dies by euthanasia after a long legal battle with her father.

Noelia Castillo, who had conducted a long legal battle with her father for the right to end her life, died on Thursday.

The Catalan government granted her the right to assisted dying but the process was suspended after legal objections raised by her father.

The European Court of Human Rights ruled in her favour earlier this week.

  13. @Wen many people, including myself will find this hard. The prospect of people suffering and being frightened I find really disturbing, epsecially when at least some of that could have been avoided via #assisteddying. Life is precious but so is quality of life, even in the final chapter.

  14. #Scotland has voted against #assisteddying. This is a very emotional subject, and I am sure those on both sides of the debate were heart felt in their opinions and honest. In the end though, I feel more for those who are facing their end of life and are now worried about how peaceful that will be. We should be about removing fear and bringing peace to people in the final stages of life.

  15. Parliament rejects assisted dying legislation

Speaking to journalists after leaving the chamber, McArthur said he was “devastated” by the result, adding the system “has been failing dying Scots for too long” and that many will feel let down by the result.

  16. And I find it really hard to read people posting about making life worth living instead. My dad died of pulmonary fibrosis, suffocating to death over two years hooked up permanently to oxygen. The last few months were agonising. People saying this haven't a clue how much some suffer. It is so cruel. #AssistedDying #Scotland #NHS #Health #PalliativeCare #Politics
