I need to show off what I made at last weekend's zine workshop!!! I hastily put together two zines: one is an Oldboy fancomic, the other a quickly thrown together resource of user funded, fandom-centric platforms (blorbo propaganda let's go!!!!). Both still need some polish before I'm ready to share more, but hey! first draft!

Fanzine-Wettbewerb: DARVO – Das ultimative ‘Monsterhearts’-Fanzine
Es geht munter weiter mit Vorstellungen von Beiträgen zum Fanzine-Wettbewerb vom System Matters Verlag.
Heute erzählen Jasmin und Andrea etwa über ihren Beitrag „DARVO“. Und der Spruch „Ein Bild sagt mehr als tausend Worte“, war nie angebrachter!
Und nun zum kleinen Interview
Wer seid ihr?
Jasmin: Ich bin Jasmin Neitzel (sie/ihr), 39, trans Frau. Ich habe an Rollenspielbüchern schon so ziemlich alles gemacht, was man tun kann, vom Schreiben über die Redaktion zu Crowdfundings. Gerade mache ich hauptsächlich Indie-Projekte, an denen ich Spaß habe. Ich podcaste mit Nerd ist ihr Hobby auch über das Thema.
Andrea: Ich bin Andrea Rick (sie/ihr), Anfang 50, queere nichtbinäre Femme. Ich bin Game Designerin, Grafikdesignerin, Übersetzerin, Lektorin, manchmal Illustratorin und vor allem der Hase hinter dem Rollenspielverlag Plotbunny Games. Seitdem ich vor knapp 5 Jahren mit Rollenspiel angefangen habe, ist also viel passiert!
Welche Rollenspiele mögt ihr?
Jasmin: Ich bin da ziemlich breit aufgestellt, aber ich mag Spiele, in denen ich dramatische Charaktere spielen kann, die sich entsprechend durch die Handlung verändern können. Ich mag es auch, wenn ich mich tiefer mit einem Thema oder Setting beschäftigen kann. Oft sind es historische Erzählspiele. “Velvet Glove” (70er Jahre Mädchengang PbtA) möchte ich hier nennen. “Vampire: Die Maskerade” als Klassiker. “Fräulein Bernburgs Pensionat für junge Damen” (50er Jahre, Coming of Age, Firebrands) muss auch genannt werden, auch als Lob an Andrea. Wenn Leute eines meiner Lieblingsspiele schreiben, mache ich natürlich gerne Projekte mit ihnen.
Andrea: Mein Herz schlägt vor allem für Drama im Rollenspiel, daher mag ich Spiele, die das auch mechanisch unterstützen (z.B. “Velvet Glove”, “Apocalypse Keys”, “Monsterhearts” oder “Pasión de las Pasiones”). In letzter Zeit spiele ich vor allem spielleitungslose Spiele, wo sich alle in der Runde die Verantwortung für die Weltbeschreibung, die Nebenfiguren und das Ausdenken von interessanten Wendungen und Konsequenzen teilen (z.B. “Good Society”, “Dream Apart”, “Our Haunt”, “Gegen das Monster” oder “Follow”). Ich muss auch nicht immer die ganze Welt retten (oder untergehen sehen), sondern erkunde gern mal alltägliche Dramen und Slice-of-Life-Geschichten (z.B. “Stewpot”, “Fräulein Bernburgs Pensionat für junge Damen”, “i’m sorry did you say street magic” oder “Viva la QueerBar”). Außerdem sind mir gut erklärte und leicht erlernbare Regeln wichtig, denn ich gehöre zu den Leuten, die tatsächlich gerne *mit* den vorhandenen Regeln spielen.
Welche Rollenspiele mögt ihr nicht?
Jasmin: Es gibt sicher Spielstile und Genres, die mir nicht zusagen, aber das ist eine Geschmacksfrage. Was ich auf einer moralischen Ebene ablehne, sind Spiele, deren Inhalte mit sogenannter KI generiert werden. “Adventure Islands” könnte ich hier als eines von mehreren negativen Beispielen hervorheben.
Andrea: Ich habe in meinem Rollenspiel wenig Interesse an detailliertem, simulationistischem Ressourcenmanagement, komplizierten Ergebnisberechnungen und epischen Settingbeschreibungen. Auch taktischer Kampf langweilt mich sehr schnell, vor allem, wenn währenddessen jedes Charakterspiel aufhört. Spielrunden ohne explizite Konsens- und Sicherheitstechniken sind auch nicht mein Ding – und zwar egal, wie flauschig das Spiel ist. Und KI-Texte oder -Bilder gehen einfach gar nicht!
Wo findet man euch?
Jasmin: In den sozialen Medien hauptsächlich bei Bluesky, meinen Podcast Nerd ist ihr Hobby habe ich schon erwähnt. Schaut einfach bei Linktree.
Andrea: Alles, was ich mit Plotbunny Games mache, findet man dort auf der Website, inklusive Links zum Verlags-Discord, Newsletter, YouTube und Social Media. Private Accounts habe ich bei Bluesky und Mastodon. Zum Spielen bin ich meistens auf dem Plotbunny-Discord oder in der Open Hearth Community unterwegs, zum Quatschen hopse ich quer durch alle möglichen deutsch- und englischsprachigen Rollenspiel-Discords.
Und nun zum Zine – wie wird es heißen?
Beide: “DARVO – Das ultimative ‘Monsterhearts’-Fanzine”
Und worum geht es?
Beide: Wir haben eine Jugendzeitschrift aus der Welt von “Monsterhearts” geschrieben, komplett mit Beratungsbriefen, Foto-Love-Story, Psychotest, Starschnitt und allem, was dazu gehört.
All das lässt sich übrigens tatsächlich als Spielmaterial und Inspiration für Monsterhearts-Runden nutzen – einige Tipps dazu gibt es im Heft.
Um das stilechte Jugendzeitschrift-Layout angemessen zur Geltung zu bringen, werden wir das 24-seitige Heft im A4-Format drucken – natürlich vollfarbig!
Die PDF-Version ist screenreader-geeignet mit PDF-Tags, Bildbeschreibungen und klickbaren Links, für maximalen Nutzungskomfort.
Ist das euer erstes Zine?
Jasmin: Ich hatte mal die Redaktion für den “Aventurischen Boten” und ich habe im Kinkbereich zu Zines beigetragen, aber es ist mein erstes Rollenspielzine.
Andrea: Ich habe letztes Jahr schon “Das praktische Brindlewood Bay Bundle im handlichen Handtaschenformat” beim Fanzine-Wettbewerb eingereicht (und einen Sonderpreis dafür gewonnen). Außerdem habe ich in den späten 90ern auch einige queere Punk-Zines gemacht – damals noch mit Schreibmaschine, Schere, Kopierer und Fixogum. Und ich habe dieses Jahr auch beim “Ziemlich zufälligen Zine” meine Finger mit drin, wo wir mit “Ensemble E – Emilia” einen gemeinsamen Fall für Brindlewood Bay geschrieben haben, den ich dann layoutet habe.
Wer macht noch bei “DARVO – Das ultimative Monsterhearts-Fanzine” mit?
Beide: Wir haben gemeinsam die Texte geschrieben, Bildrecherche gemacht und uns gegenseitig lektoriert. Layout und Bildbearbeitungen sind von Andrea. Außerdem geht ein Riesendank an die vielen, vielen Fotograf*innen, deren kostenlos bei Pexels und Unsplash zur Verfügung gestellte Bilder Andrea bei der Gestaltung des Layouts genutzt hat!
Wie bist du (oder ihr) auf das Thema gekommen?
Beide: Wir haben im Anschluss an einen der Rollenspiel-Lesekreis-Termine auf dem Plotbunny Games Discord überlegt, zu welchen Spielen von System Matters wir welches Fanzine schreiben wollen würden. Dabei sind wir ziemlich schnell bei Monsterhearts gelandet, weil wir es beide sehr mögen.
Wer das Spiel nicht kennt: In “Monsterhearts” spielt man Teenager, die auch Monster sind und sich entsprechend verhalten. Es ist ein Erzählspiel mit viel Drama und komplexen Beziehungen, bei denen die Figuren meistens alles andere als nett zueinander sind.
Eine Jugendzeitschrift für diese monströsen Teens war erst nur eine witzige Idee, aber wir haben schnell sehr viel Inspiration gefunden und uns an die Umsetzung gemacht. Und dann ist alles ein bisschen eskaliert!
Was gefällt euch besser: die Konzeptionsphase oder die Umsetzung?
Jasmin: Beides macht Spaß, ich fühle mich beim Spieldesign oft wie eine Kunsthandwerkerin und dazu gehört sowohl das Kreative und das Handwerkliche. Ein Konzept zu entwickeln und dann nicht umzusetzen ist dann ja auch irgendwie unbefriedigend und ich konzipiere so, dass ich dann auch Lust auf die Umsetzung habe.
Andrea: Ich mag beides! Rumspinnen und Ideen entwickeln ist super – am liebsten zusammen mit anderen Menschen. Aber alleine Texte schreiben, Illustrationen anfertigen und Layouts erstellen ist auch super. Ich mag den Wechsel zwischen gemeinsamer Arbeit und Solo-Herumwerkeln.
Wenn ihr selber Zines von anderen habt: empfehlt bitte mal etwas, was euch gut gefallen hat.
Jasmin: Ich bin keine Sammlerin und hatte länger keines aus dem Rollenspielbereich mehr in der Hand. Über den Tellerrand geschaut, bin ich immer wieder beeindruckt, welche Qualität “Shibari Flow” inhaltlich und von der Gestaltung anbietet.
Andrea: Letztes Jahr haben mich besonders die Illustrationen in “Semesterstart” von Olaf Lorenz begeistert, speziell das Chicken Burger Poster zum Rausnehmen – perfekter DIY-Vibe! “Am Wegesrand” von Mai-Britt Illner ist auch jedes Mal eine charmante Mischung aus Ideen und liebevoll-handgemachten Illustrationen. “Von A bis Zine” von PenPaperDice hat ein tolles, abwechslungsreiches Layout und ist außerdem eine echt gute Einführung ins Zine-Machen selbst. Außerdem mag ich die multikreativen Projekte von Frau Knurrkater (z.B. ihr “NSC Portrait Artpack” für Spiele in realitätsnahen Settings oder ihre Fälle für “Brindlewood Bay”). Spätestens da verschwimmt für mich aber auch die Grenze zwischen Fanzines und anderem Erweiterungsmaterial – aber die ist vielleicht auch gar nicht so wichtig.
Was für Zines oder Blog-Content gefallen euch generell?
Jasmin: Ich mag es, wenn Leute sich mit Ideen auseinandersetzen, gut geschriebene Theorie, die mir etwas Neues sagt, kommt gut an. Sonst mag ich auch Besprechungen, die Rollenspiel als Medium ernst nehmen. Zusätzliche Spielinhalte müssen sich bei mir mit professionellen Veröffentlichungen messen können. Nichts muss edgy oder retro sein für mich. Queere Perspektiven sind immer ein Bonus. Aber am Ende bin ich zufrieden, wenn mich der Text zum Nachdenken gebracht hat oder ich etwas Neues gelernt habe.
Andrea: Ich mag gut strukturierte Texte mit Substanz, vielfältige Perspektiven (insbesondere auch von Leuten, die keine weißen cis Männer sind) und Dinge, bei denen ich die Persönlichkeit der Verfasser*innen spüren kann. Dazu gehören für mich der “Rollenspielblog”, der Podcast “Nerd ist ihr Hobby”, der “Explorers Design” Newsletter und das “Japanese Journal of Analog Role-Playing Game Studies (JARPS)”. Rollenspiel-Zines im klassischen Sinne gehen allerdings oft an meinen Spielinteressen vorbei – für PbtA oder Erzählspiele schreiben Leute halt eher Zusatzmaterial oder Hacks in anderen Formaten oder entwickeln direkt eigene neue Spiele! Die finde ich dann meistens beim Stöbern auf Itch.io oder im Gespräch mit anderen Game Designer*innen.
