I’ve never read the book, but I saw the movie with my family right before Christmas, 2013. Some movies inspire me, while others change my life. This movie changed my life!
I connected right away to Walter Mitty, a mild-mannered office worker who has never done anything noteworthy or mentionable. Yet, he daydreams of traveling to exotic places and doing heroic things. A missing photo thrusts him out of his comfort zone to travel across the globe, where he experiences the courage and beauty of living in the moment. He works for LIFE magazine and unexpectedly fulfills the magazine’s motto: “To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other, and to feel…that is the purpose of LIFE.” The uplifting music and cinematography were also amazing!
Before seeing this movie, I had never traveled internationally. In fact, the times that I traveled outside of my state were mainly to visit the beach, approximately 350 miles away. Since seeing this movie, I have traveled to South Africa, Ireland, and Italy. To be fair, the movie was not the only inspiration. My daughters started traveling the world in their teen years as missionaries. They inspired us to come visit them halfway around the world in South Africa. Now, my husband and I travel to new places in the US as well. We are planning to travel somewhere we’ve never been next June for our 40th wedding anniversary. If I could give you advice, I’d say, “Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and experience something new. It’s worth it!”
