I've been thinking about it for months. I have a pedalboard for my flutes. But I wanted more control. More random, just more. Recording just flute or flute with effects and a looper is great, but I wanted more, more than my midi wind controller ever managed.

I bought a eurorack, an envelope follower, a rings clone. A Make noise polymaths, a Z5000 effects and some more doepfer stuff, VCAs, VCO, VCF, etc. I tried to hold back. But you know how that goes.

The last time I played with synths at this level was 50 years ago. I built a synth from a chip I found at radio shack. I wish I knew what happened to that.

A new era for my music.

Any flute geeks out there?

Flute vibrato is an often debated subject among flute players. This article puts some science behind it.

I have been using a spectrometer for many years, it is the most useful visualization tool when playing my harmonic flutes. I can watch how the the partials rise and fall as well as see how they combine in multiphonics or become the dominant note.

I now use it all the time with my transverse flutes and my shakuhachis also.

Honkyoku teachings reject the western vibrato.
The spectrometer is still very interesting with shakuhachi.

I’m now making small pentatonic #bamboo flutes, thinking of children or others who play little or no music but enjoy making nice sounds from time to time.
Lowest note: A6 ⇒ Very small (20cm).

The bamboo is sanded and oiled. It actually looks nicer that way.
I’ve gone for a fipple mouthpiece, but a straight one (I don't know how it should be called), with the widow facing you, opposite the finger holes. Apparently, this type of mouthpiece is typical of Eastern European flutes. Well, precisely… 😏
