  4. DM's could look this clean by removing prepended mentions and hiding them under a popover tooltip.

    Loops just did.

  5. I can sometimes obsess over the tiniest details, because attention to detail matters.

My most recent example: Loops DMs don't need to render the mentions in the message bubble. It just looks better without them.

They do provide important context sometimes, so they are available when you need them, with a tooltip popover.

No detail is too small when you put the user experience first. 🚀

  6. No investors.
    No ads.
    Funded by you.

Loops is free, open source, and built without corporate investors. No ads, no data harvesting, no algorithmic manipulation.

We answer to our community — and that means we're funded by the people who use and believe in the platform.

  7. When I first announced Loops, I never expected 20,000 people to sign up in the first few months.

At the same time, Pixelfed doubled from 200,000 users to over 400,000 users in ONE WEEK, mostly on pixelfed.social

Combined with the launches of the official Pixelfed Android/iOS app and the launch of our Kickstarter, I had to focus on Pixelfed.

Only to get criticized that Loops wasn't open source or federated

So I shipped it, and now its federated and open source!

  8. Flagship fediverse servers are fundamental to the growth of our network.

They don't shutdown without notice, and generally are more trusted and actively moderated and updated.

That being said, as a dev/admin of two flagship servers, it's our responsibility to build and support FULL account migration to other servers, and with LOLA, I'm confident we can do this right.

  9. I just suggested to the @Mastodon team to implement Sign in with Apple/Google in their official mobile app.

I think it would make a huge difference.

Yes, it would centralize the fediverse more, but it would also bring a whole diverse new crowd here, to make a home on the most trusted and stable Mastodon server.

Once they discover the fediverse, they could migrate to another server that better suits them.

Only a matter of time, mark my words.

  10. Your friends don't care about instances. They care about joining in 5 seconds.

On Loops for iOS it's one tap with Sign in with Apple. No server to pick, no email, no password, nothing to verify.

    It. Just. Works.

Federation stays invisible until you go looking for it.

This is how #SocialWeb platforms go mainstream.

  11. My favourite slide from my FediCon talk about Loops was the very last one I added at 3am the night before my talk.

"Someone hears about a thing, they go to sign up, and the first screen asks them to choose a server. And they don't know what a server is. They don't know what any of these words mean, and they've now been asked to make an infrastructure decision before they've seen a single video. Most of them just leave"

  12. You don't need 40,000 people.

    You just need redis.

  13. Wanted to share a short concert video on #Loops. No sound in the video after publishing. No toggleable setting for it in the upload wizard nor editing view.

    Enough ATK for today.

  14. I hope these are honest bugs, missing features, or just bad choices that can be reconsidered to make Loops better!

I also found two more bugs wich are probably just an oversight:
    - Going back from a video sends you to the root instead of the profile you came from.
    - The Explore page crops the height of videos instead of downsizing with the right aspect ratio.

Hope these can be fixed, too! @dansup

  15. 4) Buttons with event handlers are used for what could be links, breaking right click, ctrl+click, etc.
    5) RSS/Atom feed is opt in, so many profiles don't have that enabled. Many people probably don't care about or don't understand it, but it mostly breaks it for those who would benefit from it.
    6) Shortened links that make it intransparent which account the link leads to
    7) Links in posts and profile text not clickable
    8) External profile links hidden behind an extra button

  16. Notably, alt text seems to be attached to far less videos when compared to Mastodon or Pixelfed.

Unfortunately I noticed a bunch of dark patterns known from Big Tech:

    1) Extremely annoying #dickover that reappears whenever you scroll down on the Explore page.
    2) The Popular and Explore pages are artificially limited. Apparently this is to limit scrapers, but profile pages aren't limited?
    3) When clicking "View Content" on a post with CW, you're sent to a login form.

  17. I did notice though that a lot of the promoted Popular/Explore content isn't original and seems to be copied from other websites. This also includes most of the 12 curated "popular creators" accounts.
This is quite different from Mastodon and Pixelfed for example, where I feel most content is created by the people who upload it. There are however several accounts with nice original content, they're just not as easy to find!

  18. I visited loops.video (@loops) again. It's an open source Fediverse platform for short videos.

The last time it seemed like there were about 5 videos. There's definitely a lot more now!

Overall it's a nice website that really looks promising. I'm glad it exists!
