Ran a fun Palestine Open Maps mapathon yesterday with Yara Sa'di-Ibraheem. She's researching communications infrastructure in Palestine during the British colonial era, so we extracted the telecom infrastructure in the historical maps using the Tasking Manager, based on Yara's paper: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.polgeo.2024.103242
We got a lot of work done! Blue squares are the ones that have been worked on. There's a long way to go, but good progress.

❄️❄️ Snowy night bike rides are the prettiest bike rides ❄️❄️
I love how the shadows from the street lights move in this clip.
(yes I know I need a winter bike with thicker tires, but life as a PhD student is tough)

Finally published! My first solo academic publication.
It's a reflection on the difficult 2 months of the #Palestine solidarity student encampment at #uToronto, edited by Esmat elHalaby and Maya Wind.
Open access full text here: https://doi.org/10.1215/00382876-11623540
In the article, I try to place the failures of the student movement to reach a deal with the university admin in the wider context where the visions for #Palestine futures have all but disappeared since the Oslo Accords in the 90s.

#Pyrite compositions on all scales, down to the atomic, presented today in a talk by Daniel Gregory (#UToronto). He also presented new results on the formation of vanadium-enriched black shales. A figure of some framboidal pyrites (named for their raspberry resemblance) with differing concentrations of trace elements (Cu, Ni, Ar) inside and on the rim of the smallest crystals. #Minerals #McGillUniversity #BlackShale

First was a fantastic talk by Shion Guha on human-centered data science to mitigate algorithmic biases at the #UToronto iSchool. Guha explores a number of critical issues - data scientists don't necessarily have to predict anything, biased #algorithms can be just as much of a problem as biased data, and much more. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0GznoxFLw4 (2/6) #AIEthics

Next was a wide-ranging talk by Lynne Howarth on how information science is changing over time at #UToronto https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rF0lWrlkj4 (4/9)

@vmousseau my last experience at #utoronto has been our TA strike in 2014. It has soured my whole memory of that place. And we got nothing at the end.
