Just like Discount Trump here in #ontario
Can't have bike lanes if they get in the way of burning fossil fuels. #topoli #onpoli #biketo

  2. One of the many upsetting things about the Ford government's attack on bike lanes:

Prabmeet Sarkaria is the minister of transportation. He keeps saying that the bike lanes are unused and cause congestion.

He is also the first turban-wearing Sikh to be appointed to cabinet.

Any casual user of Toronto's bike lanes immediately notices that the most frequent year-round uses of the bike lanes are delivery drivers, many of whom are of Punjabi origins, just like Sarkaria.

If Sarkaria doesn't want to hear "downtown activists", maybe he should hear from his own community.

The people who will be most harmed by the bike lane removal are the delivery drivers. When a Punjabi delivery driver is killed in a car accident because he was cycling in a car lane, his blood will be is on Sarkaria's hands.

I haven't seen cycling activists trying to organize Punjabi delivery guys. Probably has to do with race and class.

  3. My take: Doug Ford's success is inextricably tied to car dependency.

Cars provide the illusion of independence: the driver does the work of piloting the machine, and is sealed off from everyone around them.

Car dependent suburbs are stratified by income, reducing the income & race diversity of who folk are exposed to. All manner of unfamiliar people start to appear scary.

Absent community, a folksy guy peddling low taxes and law & order looks just fine.

  4. The Doug Ford government has so underfunded Ontario hospitals that St. Catharines is currently asking for linen donations for their NICU.

Ford spent $25,000 of taxpayers' money for a stupid, useless sign not 15 minutes away, but no blankets for babies.

  9. Trump wants to rename Lake Ontario "Lake America" now?

That's so funny! 🇨🇦We🇨🇦 are also planning to change it - to "Lake Release the Epstein Files You Hateful Diaper-Filling Troll!"

  10. Ontario PR supporters: here is a concrete action.

If you support proportional representation and are eligible to join the Ontario Liberal Party, join through the official OLP page:

    action.ontarioliberal.ca/f/join

Then contact EVERY leadership candidate. Tell them you joined and that support for PR and cross-party cooperation will influence your leadership vote.

Candidate positions are still evolving. That makes now the time to push.

A quiet supporter is easy to overlook. An organized bloc of new members writing every campaign is not.

  14. *The #Saugeen #FirstPeoples won their lawsuit 👏 Appeals court dismissed #Ontario government's appeal. Justice was finally served.*

Ontario's top court has upheld a lower court's ruling that a strip of #SaubleBeach, a popular Ontario tourist spot, has always belonged to a local #FirstNation.

In a 121-page decision on Monday, the Ontario Court of Appeal dismissed appeals brought by the Municipality of South #BrucePeninsula, the Ontario government, and several local families to the April 2023 ruling by Superior Court Justice Susan Vella.

"Justice was done today," said Saugeen First Nation Chief Conrad Ritchie in a statement, calling it a "powerful moment" for the Saugeen community.

In her 2023 decision, Vella ruled that "Chi-Cmiinh," a roughly two-kilometre strip of beach at the northern end of Saugeen Reserve No. 29, had always belonged to Chippewas of Saugeen First Nation, and that the federal government breached its treaty rights.

The Crown, Vella wrote, failed to protect and preserve the #treaty it signed in 1854, Treaty 72, in which the First Nation and neighbouring #Chippewas of Nawash surrendered Saugeen Peninsula, excluding five #Indigenous reserve territories. One would become #ReserveNo29.

  15. Injured Workers’ Bill of Rights

Every day in Ontario, workers are injured or made ill on the job. All too often, these workers must battle within a workers’ compensation system that was built to support them but fails to meet their needs. This unjust process is unacceptable for injured workers who are simply seeking the compensation and benefits they are owed. Learn more and sign the petition here:
