  1. CW: Dissertation - progress

Ok.

  2. Are you doing #SLR aka Systematic Literature Reviews?

Two contributors, Faneesh and Loay, worked this summer on improving JabRef's SLR feature.

The key change is the addition of a new native query mode; e.g., you can now formulate such queries for each catalog, and JabRef will send them directly to the website. And for reproducibility, JabRef will store all sent queries.

  3. Eine tolle App um endlich mal das Bücherregal zu katalogisieren!

Ich finde ein Muss für Leseratten die ihre Wände voller Bücher haben.

  4. @jabref
I have using the #BibTeX + #JabRef setup for a very long time. My reference library already contains over 2,000 fully formated sources across various fields of study.

  5. 🛠 What does an end-to-end open-source stack look like for an independent hydrogeochemical monograph?

Doing full-cycle research—from thermodynamic calculations to print-ready LaTeX typesetting—requires a synchronized toolkit. Here is the exact stack:

    🧪 Thermodynamics & Analytics:
    #PHREEQC 3.7.3 for aqueous speciation&equilibrium modeling.
#Rstats Stack: RedModRphree, ggtern, sf/terra, tidyverse (ETL).

    🗺 GIS & Literature Search:
#QGIS for spatial alignment & cartography.
#Recoll for local full-text search across reference databases.

    📚 Typesetting & Reproducibility:
    #LaTeX2e + #TeXStudio + #JabRef for typography & #BibTeX references.
    • xtable for automated R-to-LaTeX data exporting.
#Debian Linux as a main engine.

💡 Takeaway: Zero proprietary software licenses needed. Complete reproducibility from raw analytical data to a print-ready PDF.

  6. Another milestone reached!
We crossed the 4500 stargazers on #github

And we are close to another milestone, the 6.0-beta. We worked hard and worked on improvements and bug fixes across JabRef. For example, we revamped the entry editor to make it easier to add/remove fields.

Curious? Try out the latest dev version and see for yourself!

  8. Bibliography interoperability is mostly a mirage.
There is no shared canonical model for bibliographic data: BibTeX, CSL-JSON, CFF, RIS, and others encode overlapping but incompatible views of the same reality.
Every converter is just a heuristic translator. We’ve optimized tools, not the model itself. Every ecosystem re-implements the same edge cases, calls it innovation, and ships the same mistakes again.

  9. 🌞 JabRef 6.0 Alpha 6 released! 🌞

We are thrilled to announce a new alpha version! The version is formally an alpha but stable enough for usage.

    Highlights:

    - Revamped notifications and pop-up
    - Improved generation and handling of inserted citations in LibreOffice
    - Improved inspections for #biblatex and #bibtex

  10. We are excited that we are participating in #GSOC2026 with 3 projects:

    - "Improved handling of older documents with OCR and AI-powered tools."

    - "Improved #LibreOffice -JabRef integration" with one particular aspect of compatibility with other reference managers.

    - "Improving startup times for JabKit" by leveraging the power of #GraalVM

  11. One task that staff & students outsource to #llmchatbots is transforming #BibTex from a publisher website or library catalogue into particular academic citation styles. To save resources, we can look into alternatives like Chris Proctor's pybtex-apa7-style #Python plugin for #APA7. I have adapted his plugin in a script with widgets for reuse in Colab:

    github.com/MonikaBarget/Digita

Maybe this is of help to others. MLA & other citation styles have no pybtex plugins yet, but this may still change. 🤞🏼

  12. @parleur

  13. In a large open source project, unfortunately, it can happen tha solving an issue may take a while..
We are pleased to announce that a longstanding 6-year-old annoying issue with using keyboard shortcuts in the BibTeX code text area got fixed
    github.com/JabRef/jabref/issue

Side effect: people in our team also learned about these nice macOS keyboard shortcuts for navigation and text selection.

  14. @fiduswriter JabRef's internal format is just #bibtex We already have one for Citavi with a test case and some others, I think Mendeley is not yet supported because you can export it as a bib file
All other import formats are implemented here: github.com/JabRef/jabref/tree/

We also support integration with #LIbreOffice

  15. In the spirit of this year’s Winter Olympics 🇮🇹 ❄️ 🏟️, we are proud to announce a winner as well: A new JabRef version…

We are excited to announce the new alpha 5 of JabRef.

As already written in an earlier post, it now features the new citations fetched from OpenCitation and OpenAlex.

Another new cool feature is now the download of book cover images.
Of course, we also fixed the usual bugs.

And of course we would like to thank all people who contribute to #JabRef in so many ways. This keeps us motivated.

  18. If you are trying to cite the stochastic parrots paper and you get `LaTeX Error: Unicode character 🦜 (U+1F99C)` then adding:
\usepackage{twemojis} % So we can cite stochastic parrots
    \DeclareUnicodeCharacter{1F99C}{\twemoji{parrot}}
Fixes things. There may be other better solutions. #BibTeX #LaTeX #AI
