  6. We are excited that we are participating in #GSOC2026 with 3 projects:

    - "Improved handling of older documents with OCR and AI-powered tools."

    - "Improved #LibreOffice -JabRef integration" with one particular aspect of compatibility with other reference managers.

    - "Improving startup times for JabKit" by leveraging the power of #GraalVM

  7. In the spirit of this year’s Winter Olympics 🇮🇹 ❄️ 🏟️, we are proud to announce a winner as well: A new JabRef version…

We are excited to announce the new alpha 5 of JabRef.

As already written in an earlier post, it now features the new citations fetched from OpenCitation and OpenAlex.

Another new cool feature is now the download of book cover images.
Of course, we also fixed the usual bugs.

  8. Happy Valentine's Day, and more important, today is "I Love Free Software Day! The day to express gratitude to all those #opensource contributors.

And of course we would like to thank all people who contribute to #JabRef in so many ways. This keeps us motivated.

  9. We know that there are some #emacs fans among our followers. We would like to see a blog article about using JabRef's #LSP server with Emacs as a client. The LSP server covers the integrity check and consistency check of #JabRef.
Not only that, but we are happy for a quick write-up from a real human, not some AI slop. The blog post will, of course, feature your name.

  10. We have an early present for you!
Leveraging JabRef's brand new Git integration, it's now possible to directly sync your bibliography with Overleaf by using GitHub as an intermediate.

We have written a short description in our blog post on how to get started.
Currently, only one-way sync is possible!

  11. @ctietze @simon_brooke Of course we have to mention #JabRef We use #bibtex as primary format and are completely open source.

And we also have support for pushing citations to #emacs

  12. JabRef meets GIt - for easier collaboration!

Thanks to our #GSOC contributor, Wanling, JabRef now supports experimental integration with #git and #GitHub to simplify collaboration.
The cool thing is that you don't need to know anything about Git or its details.
The heart of the new feature is the fantastic semantic conflict resolution, which works on an entry/field basis.

  13. 📚 Fifteen years of my personal BibTeX database!

Fifteen years ago, I started keeping my own BibTeX database — just a plain text file edited manually, line by line.
Later I switched to JabRef, and everything became much smoother!

Over the years, the database has grown to almost 2,000 entries — and it’s no longer just a list of references, but a snapshot of the knowledge I’ve interacted with.
Because I always fill in the Abstract field, full-text search now lets me literally “remember everything.”

Among all my long-term “personal productivity” projects, this one has turned out to be the most valuable.

  14. Did you know the #SILE #digitalTypesetting system supports a fairly decent subset of #BibTeX / #BibLaTeX and Citation Style Language for bibliographies? True, it's a work in progress, but with some fixes just proposed upstream, it gets better at the task.

  15. Working on a scientific paper and need to quickly insert a citation?

If you’ve used #JabRef before, you might know the “push to application” feature. Now, JabRef supports cite-as-you-write (CAYW)! (Also known as “cite while you write”)

In #TeXstudio, press c three times to open the citation dialog—no plugin needed.

  16. 🚀 Convenience update in JabRef: When fetching data via DOI, the most plausible year and entry type are now auto-selected.

  18. A question to the academic #HiveMind:

We are currently developing an extension to #ConfTool that will allow for the export of conference programmes as #BibTeX / #BibLaTeX . What would be your entry type of choice for otherwise unpublished conference presentations, posters etc.?

If you opt for “something else“, please provide your preference in a reply. Any comments are more than welcome.

  19. I sent @PLOS a mail with a fix for their style so that @misc entries (e.g. preprints) include a DOI (if any).

I always find it super frustrating when looking through a references list, then finding no DOI for an entry, when there definitely exists one - you see that the journal's bibliography style ignores DOIs for anything but @article etc. Don't really understand why.

Haven't had much success with other journals in this regard. We'll see if is better 😀

  30. The first #GithubAction to check #Bibtex consistency. For instance: Do all articles have page numbers, no articles, or is there a mix?

We improved the onboarding experience for new users, improved #CSL support in LibreOffice and for the #TexLaTeX users we now have support for analyzing blg files in the integrity check.

  32. If anyone from the University of Hull follows me, did you know I maintain a set of latex templates that support the Hull Harvard referencing system? I don't remember who I inherited it from, but it's pretty cool and I've taken up the torch of maintaining it myself.

Yesterday, I updated it to the new Hull Harvard style (which required manually editing the hull.bst file, which was an adventure in and of itself if anyone would be interested in reading a blog post about it?). Please see recent commit message for further information if you're migrating:

Occasionally, I just add |s in my instead of in an extra file. Here is a tool to make bibitems easily.

Still having trouble on the formerly perfect #BibTeX export. But I am confident because my beloved admin is back from holidays and browsing the backlog.

  38. Our new #JabRef Release 5.9 is online now!

Despite fixing some annoying regressions (could not be installed on #debian) we also did some performance improvements and as new feature, we improved the configuration of mulitline fields

For #macOS, we could not get the #apple #notarization working for that release with the #jdk.

As a workaround, you have to execute:
    `xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/JabRef.app`
