  2. Israel opinions and tax law aside, its unreasonable to expect half the worlds Jews to avoid the other half.

"A group of pro-#Palestinian organizations have filed a complaint with the #Canada Revenue Agency (#CRA) accusing 11 #Jewish #schools of "promoting the #Israeli #military and potentially aiding and abetting illegal military recruiting."

The complaint [is] essentially formally asking the #tax regulator to investigate whether a registered #charity or #nonprofit has broken #Canadian charity/tax rules. Given that many private schools are registered #charities, the complaint is asking the CRA to examine whether those schools’ activities are consistent with the rules required to keep charitable status.

It comes just months after #TheMaple's #DavideMastracci, who formerly released the Find #IDF #Soldiers, unveiled his new project called #GTAtoIDF, which #doxes institutions that Canadian-Israeli soldiers attended and their involvement with them." 🤔

  7. This is International House in #Brixton #London, a high rise that has been a thriving home to dozens of #community groups, #charities, #advocacy & #socialjustice orgs since 2018. There's an amazing #rooftopcafé & even saunas! But #Lambeth is seeking to sell it off to a #UAE property developer to turn it into... luxury flats & corporate offices (with token #socialhousing & commmunity space).

OBJECT now in the consultation before 12/03 & share!

  8. I'm pissed off and disappointed.

I just received a #telemarketing phone call on behalf of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, #soliciting #donations.

It sounded pretty human-ish -- I believe it was using actual recorded sentences of a human being - but they were edited/glued-together in a slightly unnatural way. I believe it was an #IVR system.

So in the middle of one of its speeches, I interrupted with "You're actually a #recorded announcement, aren't you?"

And it replied with some meaningless interjection followed by "No, I'm a real live #agent". And it wasn't. It definitely wasn't. I tested it further and it immediately failed, giving nonsensical replies and then suddenly switching to a "thank you for completing..." (which I hadn't) announcement and disconnecting.

Legitimate #charities shouldn't be employing telemarketing #robots which lie and claim to be #humans. Full stop.

    #Shame on the CNIB.

  9. Today is my birthday! 🎈

I would like it if you could/would make a donation to a cause you care about.

The causes that motivate me to make the world a better place are ones that involve either protecting the environment, social justice, people in Gaza and Ukraine, feeding the hungry, reading programs, anti-ai groups, the Fediverse, and open-source technology.

  11. Govia Thameslink #Railway has created a #Safeguarding Manager role to support passengers and staff across its #Gatwick Express, Great Northern, Southern and Thameslink networks. The post replaces and broadens the former Suicide Prevention Manager role. Rebecca Butler, who has more than 20 years’ safeguarding experience with vulnerable young people and adults, has been appointed. She previously led safeguarding teams at #Brighton & Hove City Council. At GTR she works with managers on issues such as #suicide prevention, County Lines, homelessness and violence against women and girls, alongside Network Rail, local authorities, #British #Transport Police and #charities including the #Samaritans and Railway Children. GTR says the role strengthens its commitment to safety, with the wider safeguarding work also supported by its “Your Station, Your Community Improvement Fund”.

    What are Israel Bonds?

Israel Bonds launched in May 1951 in New York, only three years after the Nakba. By 1971, worldwide sales had already passed $2 billion, and by 1992, $12 billion. As of 2022, worldwide sales of Israel Bonds exceeded $47 billion. Despite the devastation caused by Israeli’s escalation of genocide in October 2023, in the 30 days after October 7, Israel Bonds secured another $1 billion in investments. Israel Bonds are the main finance source for Israel’s state budget and have been critical to financing the ongoing genocide in Gaza. In Canada, Israel Bonds are administered by Canada-Israel Securities, Limited (CISL).

  13. Working list: Transitional tiny home villages in the USA

Provided below is a working list of transitional (or interim) tiny home villages that have been developed or are in various stages of development across the United States. The majority of these have been established either to provide shelter for the unhoused, those in recovery programs, those exiting foster care, or to help reintegrate formerly incarcerated individuals back into society.

    Source: bernco.gov

Those listed as proposed have not begun construction and may still be in the funding and approval phases. Those listed as under development are further along in the process, but a completion date has not been provided. A minimum of five (5) units was required to be included in the listing. The list does not include supportive parking programs, shelters, RV only sites, nor motels/hotels voucher program for the homeless.

As is evident from the list, a much larger proportion of the tiny home communities opened to date have been built in the western half of the United States, with states California, Washington, and Oregon leading the way.

The actual residential capacity of most of these sites is higher than the number of units/rooms, as some units include more than one bed and some units are designed for families versus individuals. The list will be updated periodically as more information is found. Any additions, corrections, or suggestions, are most welcome. Peace!

  15. News that the Samaritans in England are considering huge changes doesn't surprise me because it's symptomatic of big national charities failing to listen to their volunteers.

The often highly paid top table of this type of organisation seem increasingly unable to differentiate between a charitable organisation and a For-profit business.

    It's very sad.

  21. House Republicans look to help Trump strip tax-exempt status of nonprofits he says support terrorism

By ALEXA ST. JOHN and MATTHEW DALY
    Updated 1:37 PM EDT, May 13, 2025

WASHINGTON (AP) — "A proposal by Republicans in Congress would allow President Donald Trump’s administration to remove the tax-exempt status of nonprofits that it says support #terrorism, creating what some #nonprofits say is an arbitrary standard to financially punish #charities that advocate for issues that don’t align with his agenda.

"Unusual language added Monday to a reconciliation bill from the House Ways and Means Committee — the tax-writing committee — would allow for terminating the tax-exempt status of groups the administration deems 'terrorist supporting organizations.' The language mirrors a bill from the last Congress that passed in the House but did not pass the Senate.

"The definition and criteria for determining whether or how an organization supports terrorism are unclear. The bill also targets nonprofits in other ways, echoing complaints by Trump, who has called the tax-exempt status a 'privilege' that has been 'abused.' Trump has threatened to revoke tax-exempt status for groups that don’t abide by his directives or agree with his views."

    [...]

"Michelle Roos, executive director of the Environmental Protection Network, which represents hundreds of former scientists and regulators, said last month 'we all pay the price' when charitable organizations are silenced based on politics.

"For example, the move to revoke #TaxExempt status could choke off funding for groups that urge greater action to promote clean air, water and land, work to help communities most affected by industrial pollution and advocate for projects and policies to combat #ClimateChange — among other issues.

" 'It threatens the rights, health, and future of every community,' Roos said in a statement.

Last month, Trump said he could target environmental groups and the ethics watchdog organization Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington."
