This is a photo I send to my parents when I want them to know I’m being frugal
This is the peasant food of my culture. Teochew porridge (you can feed a family with just half a cup of rice), preserved olive vegetables, sambal matah. The sides are usually salty things like braised tofu and steamed fish with fish sauce and preserved plums, but I just rustled up whatever I had (steamed egg, egg tofu, and canned mussels)
Teochew ‘mue’ is very different from Cantonese congee (‘jook’). The rice grains must stay whole, never broken or mushy; the water is unflavored; there is a higher water ratio (1:10 instead of 1:6 or 1:8). The mue is unseasoned so you can eat it with the freshest savory fish, eggs, and tofu

My grandfather was born in Swatow, China. Being a person whose ‘old village’ is Swatow is a big part of my identity. In the diaspora in California, France, Thailand and around the world I’ve met people who feel similarly. The food and language is a part of the culture, but also similarly the sense of service and help and support for others.
In this video (no subtitles sadly) at 11:17, is a scene that resonates with me. There, a bunch of people decide to put up a ‘great feast’ on the streets for the low income elderly people locally. The details of how they prepare this feast, and all the traditional foods (which are also foods that I know well), the sense of feeding people, getting people together, helping each other. Getting through hard times through community and delicious and amazing food. I think that’s carried me through my life; even though I’ve never been to Swatow. (Too emotional for me; I wanted to wait. But this video gave me a good sense of what it’s like.)

I’ve shot more film this week than in the last decade. For most of the 10s I had a health condition that gave me super shaky hands for a decade. I could not reliably focus a rangefinder (or even hold one up).
I’m thankful for being able to pick up on the things I’ve loved and missed. My skills are rusty, but the joy and happiness from taking pictures never left.
