  1. 🎉 Oh boy, another thrilling tale of how a tech company finally realized that listening to customers might be a good idea! 🙄 Two years ago, they discovered #Kubernetes and #Oxide were meant to be together, like peanut butter and jelly—if only someone had thought to put them in the same sandwich sooner! 🍞🤦‍♂️

  6. RE: mastodon.social/@glynmoody/116

At least one manufacturer noticed this some years back.

@oxidecomputer saw it as a risk, and wrote their own minimalist boot and a service processor that replaces the "let's throw a random program into ring 3" approach of Intel and AMD.

They blogged about it at oxide.computer/blog/hubris-and

  8. Want to self-host a high-population #Rust game server on #Ubuntu? 🐧🎮

Rust is incredibly demanding on hardware. We've published a comprehensive guide on setting up a bare-metal server using #SteamCMD. It covers creating a non-root user, writing a resilient start.sh loop inside #tmux, locking down your RCON port using UFW, and installing the #Oxide framework for C# plugins.

  11. #Oxide plans new rack attack with #Zen5 #CPU, #DDR5
Upcoming gear will include new compute blades powered by #AMD's #Turin #EPYC, boasting core counts of up to 192 cores and support for faster DDR5 6400 MT/s memory — big upgrade over comparatively glacial DDR4 3200 MT/s memory shipped in OG Oxide rack
Cantrill says Oxide will offer GPUs at some point, but argues ompany has plenty of work left to do with regard to CPU, storage, and networking to keep it busy for now.

  16. Can anyone tell me why a company which has a stated goal of delivering "the API-driven services that modernity demands" has an API that doesn't seem to support almost any event streams or notifications?

Did I miss something or is it just about lock-in rather than innovation?

Here's a design guide for what I would expect to see in an actually modern API:

  18. 🚨🤖 "#Transparency #in #Hardware/#Software #Interfaces" is here to #Revolutionize your life by stating the mind-blowing fact that computing systems consist of both hardware *and* software. Shocking, right? Apparently, the groundbreaking revelation is that interfaces can be "tricky" and #Oxide is bravely stepping up to the plate... except for SSD firmware. Way to almost save the day, Oxide! 🙄💻

  20. I was listening to an old #oxide podcast about #Rust and our individual perception of beauty related to computer languages.

Well, my personal beautiful languages are #modula2 and #objective_c. #Swift was about to classify as such, but took a wrong turn and followed the rocky path of C++ 😒

  22. #Oxide Computer Company ships first 'cloud computers' and awaits customer scale-up
Oxide machines combine compute, storage, and networking elements as sleds in a plug-and-play rack. They also include #opensource software needed to build, run, and operate a cloud-like infrastructure on-site. Oxide has so far shipped “under 20 racks." One existing Oxide user is e-commerce giant #Shopify, which indicates the growth potential for the systems available.

  24. Scientists confirm record highs for three most important heat-trapping gases

The levels of the three most important heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere reached new record highs again last year, US scientists have confirmed, underlining the escalating challenge posed by the climate crisis.

The global concentration of #carbon #dioxide, the most important and prevalent of the greenhouse gases emitted by human activity, rose to an average of 419 parts per million in the atmosphere in 2023 while #methane, a powerful if shorter-lasting greenhouse gas, rose to an average of 1922 parts per billion.
Levels of #nitrous #oxide, the third most significant human-caused warming emission, climbed slightly to 336 parts per billion.

  26. EPA curbs cancer-causing chemical used to sterilize medical devices

The Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday announced tougher #limits on a #cancer-#causing #gas used to #sterilize #medical #equipment, a move aimed at helping disadvantaged communities across the country reduce their exposure to a toxic pollutant.

Some environmental and public health advocates criticized the final rule as too weak, saying it would not adequately protect low-income and minority communities that are disproportionately affected.

At the same time, the #medical #device #industry warned that the rule could disrupt the supply of safe medical equipment at hospitals and clinics nationwide.

The rule targets emissions of #ethylene #oxide, an odorless, colorless gas that has been linked to several types of cancer, particularly #lymphoma and #leukemia.

It illustrates the tensions between two of the Biden administration’s signature priorities:
promoting environmental justice and bolstering domestic supply chains.

Michael Regan, the first Black man to serve as EPA administrator, has put an emphasis on curbing deadly pollution in communities of color and low-income neighborhoods.

He announced the proposed rule last year in Louisiana, where an 85-mile-long area between New Orleans and Baton Rouge is known as “#Cancer #Alley” because of numerous polluting facilities, including those that produce ethylene oxide.
