  1. Some months ago I bought a ~50 year old film camera via a Japanese online auction site, a Canon Canonet QL17. It's a fixed focal length camera, 40mm, with very hands-on manual controls. There's an auto setting too, which is shutter-priority.

These are very popular second-hand, because although they were mass-produced in huge numbers, they have really high-quality lenses and they are simple and fun to use. Perfect for street photography.

I was lucky to find a really clean one with no scratches or lens mould. The ad said the auto exposure feature wasn't working, but you can use it in manual mode anyway. So I didn't have to pay the full going price for one that was otherwise in almost perfect condition.

Also, I had a hunch, after doing some research, that I might be able to fix the automatic metering anyway. Turns out I was right, I just needed to find the right type of battery and use some tin foil to make a good contact in the battery chamber.

I have really been enjoying shooting on film again. Each shot is so much more meaningful than with digital. And the colours are wonderful. I've been using Kodak Ultra Max 400 so far, and some Ilford B&W.

  6. Hey #believeinfilm friends,

How much does it cost you to develop & scan a single roll of colour-negative film at your local labs?

Pls reply with your country and what you usually pay for this service.

I'm writing an article about saving money on film, and I'm hoping to get a better idea of what the true costs of shooting film are in 2026 for y'all.
