A comienzos del siglo XX, la fotografía todavía tenía algo de ritual.
No era algo cotidiano.
Era lenta, técnica y, sobre todo, cara.
Hacerse un retrato implicaba ir a un estudio, posar con calma y esperar un resultado que no siempre estaba al alcance de cualquiera.En ese contexto aparece en 1900 la Kodak Brownie, una pequeña cámara lanzada por Kodak con una idea bastante clara: que cualquiera pudiera hacer fotos sin ser fotógrafo.
Costaba un dólar.
Y eso lo cambia todo.Era un aparato sencillo, casi básico, pensado para quitarle complejidad a la fotografía.
No había que saber de lentes, ni de química, ni de tiempos de exposición.
Solo había que encuadrar, disparar y seguir con la vida.
El resto lo hacía el laboratorio.Hasta ese momento, la fotografía había sido algo más cercano a la élite técnica. Incluso desde sus inicios en el siglo XIX, con experimentos como los primeros autorretratos de Robert Cornelius, el proceso seguía siendo largo, delicado y poco accesible.
La Brownie rompe esa barrera.
De repente, la gente empieza a fotografiar lo cotidiano: un cumpleaños, un paseo, un niño jugando, una reunión familiar.
Cosas que antes no se consideraban “dignas” de quedar registradas ahora empiezan a formar parte de la memoria visual de la gente común.Y ahí está el cambio real.
La fotografía deja de ser solo documento histórico o retrato formal, y empieza a convertirse en algo personal, casi íntimo.
No se trata ya de posar para la historia, sino de guardar momentos propios.La Kodak Brownie no inventa la fotografía, pero sí cambia quién puede usarla.
Y eso, en la práctica, es lo que hace que el mundo moderno empiece a parecerse más al que conocemos hoy: uno donde cualquiera puede capturar su vida, sin pedir permiso.

Years ago (in Seattle, at the corner of 8th and Seneca, kitty-corner from the Town Hall building) there was a fire in the apartment building next to mine, and I got to watch as firefighters used their ladder truck to rescue residents from the upper floors. That building was soon condemned, and some time after I'd moved away, it and the building I was living in at the time were torn down.

Wer kennt sie nicht von damals, die guten alten Kodak Filme für den Fotoapparat. Mein Liebling war der Tri-X 400 Schwarz-Weiß Film gewesen.
Nach dem Lesen des Interviews mit Alice Lovejoy bei @flaminghydra sehe ich den Namen Kodak unter einen völlig neuen Licht. Genauer gesagt dem Licht des Tages der 2 Sonnen, wie ihn die Japaner nennen.
Lovejoy gibt in diesen Buch eine Einsicht in die maßgebliche Beteiligung von Kodak bei der Entwicklung der Atombombe und chemischen Kampfstoffen. Auch ein Blick zum großen Konkurrenten, der deutschen Agfa, fehlt nicht.

In der #Mittagspause den #Kentmere 400 #35mm #Film vom #Sonntag #entwickelt. Das #Kodak #D76 ist steinalt und ziemlich #verbraucht, aber nach einem Test mit einem Stück vom Leader habe ich mich schließlich auf 15 Minuten bei den 21°C geeinigt, die heute aus dem Wasserhahn kamen. Das #Ergebnis kann sich sehen lassen: Die #Canon #T70 macht mit dem Standard-f/1,8-Nifty-Fifty sehr schöne Bilder. Und mein "neues" #Handy macht erstaunlich gute Fotos von den nassen #Negativ|en unter der #Dusche.
