I need 16 free colanders to fill my old kiddie pool to create a perpetual isolated garden of only watercress. Traditional Teochew watercress soup, with pork, has been one of my fave comfort foods since childhood. I could eat a bowl or two every day & still want to eat more of it. My fave comfort foods are peasant foods - simple, delicious, nutritious, goodness.
Mom & I used to go harvest it from the wilds for years. Now that we're both older, I want to grow them for easier & regular harvesting.

A huge Teochew movie from China (about Teochew immigration to SE Asia) was set to be screened in Singapore.. dubbed in Mandarin only.
People were upset, and we got the imperialistic Mandarin-only media rule removed.

If you’re familiar with Cantonese congee you’re probably confused by Teochew porridge. Which is plain.
This is basically what my Teochew family used to eat for lunch daily.
This Chinese Cooking Demystified video explains it. The trick is to eat it with delicious sides (steamed fish, steamed tofu, preserved vegetables, briny olives etc)

Made on a shoestring budget, the hit Teochew film Dear You has triggered a surge of interest from the Chinese diaspora and those wishing to reconcile with regional cultures.
The film has been one of China’s biggest box office surprises this year. Despite its modest 14 million yuan (US$2 million) production budget, it had grossed 1.9 billion yuan by June 27, less than two months after its release.
The film, starring a largely rookie cast, debuted in April and was initially available on less than 4 per cent of the country’s screens, but has since grown into a national phenomenon through word of mouth.

Singapore decided to screen it in its Mandarin language dub

When I was growing up, my family members were the only Teochew people I knew, and the only people I spoke Teochew to. For some reason I always assumed that everyone was introverted and soft spoken.
I now have Teochew neighbors who exist on a different volume, so I think it just means my entire family is introverted and autistic. Nothing to do with the language we speak.

I was having some issues with the man who was doing Mom's taxes today because he wasn't really listening to my questions for clarity. He kept interrupting me, giving answers that I wasn't asking about. I was talking to Mom in Teochew & relaying some of her questions to him too. One Asian woman overheard everything. She came out to help us out & she put the man in his place 🙏
It was a senior tax preparer & she's the office manager too. I found out, serendipitously, that she's a #Gaginang - fellow #Teochew person! Meeting another Teochew person who speaks the language, in Victoria, is like finding a unicorn - it's very rare! The last time I found another Teochew in the public wilds was over 30 years ago!
Mom & I loved talking to her in our mutually shared language. It turns out that she's also a refugee from South Vietnam & her family has some roots near my Mom's village too. Amazing serendipity!
I'm so happy to meet & befriend Teochew person, today! I'm beaming with happy feelings 🥰

Toishan Kitchen on Burnside Rd, across from Tillicum mall, has authentic Canton & Teochew dishes. It is the only restaurant in the city that offers Teochew foods on their menu.

This is the peasant food of my culture. Teochew porridge (you can feed a family with just half a cup of rice), preserved olive vegetables, sambal matah. The sides are usually salty things like braised tofu and steamed fish with fish sauce and preserved plums, but I just rustled up whatever I had (steamed egg, egg tofu, and canned mussels)
Teochew ‘mue’ is very different from Cantonese congee (‘jook’). The rice grains must stay whole, never broken or mushy; the water is unflavored; there is a higher water ratio (1:10 instead of 1:6 or 1:8). The mue is unseasoned so you can eat it with the freshest savory fish, eggs, and tofu

Part of my hearty #AsianBreakfast today is chai tow kway -> savoury #radish cake. I had it #TeochewViet style - fried, without eggs & with nuoc cham sauce poured over them.
When I do them traditional Teochew Chinese style, we fry them with eggs & eat them with a soy sauce/red vinegar/chili sauce blend.

My grandfather was born in Swatow, China. Being a person whose ‘old village’ is Swatow is a big part of my identity. In the diaspora in California, France, Thailand and around the world I’ve met people who feel similarly. The food and language is a part of the culture, but also similarly the sense of service and help and support for others.
In this video (no subtitles sadly) at 11:17, is a scene that resonates with me. There, a bunch of people decide to put up a ‘great feast’ on the streets for the low income elderly people locally. The details of how they prepare this feast, and all the traditional foods (which are also foods that I know well), the sense of feeding people, getting people together, helping each other. Getting through hard times through community and delicious and amazing food. I think that’s carried me through my life; even though I’ve never been to Swatow. (Too emotional for me; I wanted to wait. But this video gave me a good sense of what it’s like.)

Still loving this song. Ironically I understand the Cantonese lyrics better than the Teochew one.* I thought the Hakka version of the song was the most beautiful.
* I say ironically because Hokkien is a close cousin of Teochew, so I should understand what she's saying but I don't. Probably because Penang Hokkien is a Creole version that is probably not understandable to anyone outside Malaysia 😆

One of my traditional foods is a stuffed bun that replaces the bread with a huge tofu pocket. I haven’t had that in years and I think it will be hugely delicious for lots of people who have not tried it. It’s the teochew ‘tau kwa pau’

CW: Food, oat and tea congee with Teochew pickled radish omelette
I make congee using oats instead of rice sometimes. I add a black tea bag for a few minutes (green also works), and dashi. Then I fry up some ‘chai poh’ (pickled radish) omelette and that’s basically what my childhood lunch was (rice instead of oats, but you get it)
