  1. Manipulation of information in times of crisis: evidence from Covid excess mortality

“Governmental information manipulation has been hard to measure and study systematically. This paper provides comparable country-level estimates of the extent of misinformation in official data, in a large and diverse set of countries. We hand-collect data from a variety of sources in 134 countries to estimate misreporting of Covid mortality in 2020-2021. We find that information manipulation by governments during this period was remarkably widespread: between 45%–55% of governments misreport the number of deaths. 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞: 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝟓.𝟎𝟖 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟎-𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟏, 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐨𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝐚𝐭 𝟏𝟐.𝟒𝟕 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧. The lion’s share of misreporting cannot be attributed to a country’s capacity to accurately diagnose and report deaths. Contrary to some theoretical expectations, information manipulation takes the form of downplaying rather than exaggerating the severity of the crisis.

What characterizes governments that manipulate information? We examine the role of macroeconomic incentives, culture, audience sophistication, and institutions. The evidence strongly suggests that misreporting is higher where governments face fewer social and institutional constraints; in countries holding elections during this period; and in countries with a communist legacy.”

  2. In less fun news, my husband and I tested positive for covid. It's only the second time for me, but I've been vaccinated (as has Mike), so I'm hopeful this round will be easier. And so far, our even more freshly vaxxed son is testing negative. I hope he does fight it off. #CovidIsNotOver #CovidVaccine #MaskUp

Edit: Boosts welcome. Covid is not over, y'all!

  3. I'm seeing a quite a few investigative journalism articles (from usually decent, well researched publications) writing about medical issues, past-tensing COVID, and then going on to suggest a variety of reasons why there's a sharp rise in such-and-such a rare medical condition, illnesses, deaths, year around crowded hospitals etc.

So, at no point in your investigation did you, or your editors "uncover" that the pandemic never ended. Or that #COVID is a still a really really nasty novel virus that fucks you up in so many ways (often without you knowing for a while) and getting it two or three times a year might just help you explain a few of these things?

  6. The right remembers the initial collective societal efforts to control the spread of Covid as so horrible that they must never ever be repeated.

Because 2020 was way too much like a rehearsal for a General Strike.

If you want to move society to the left, you can help make it happen today if you #maskup .

"Australia is preparing to wind back its universal COVID-19 vaccine program, with free vaccines to be limited to people considered most at risk of severe disease. Adrian Esterman, chair of biostatistics and epidemiology at the University of Adelaide, says new eligibility rules could leave some people vulnerable."

  31. @thatkatharine I think a combination of all of that is my preferred friend. I do occasionally run into a rabid anti masker out in the real world. But…I’m an adult and I’m allowed to tell them to go fuck themselves and make them stand 5 feet away from me.
    🤣 🤣 🤣

  37. That's my tenth COVID vaccine done.

I assume that means my next 5G purchase is free? Or was it the Italian army? Or was it mind control? Or was it meant to be dead by now? I always had trouble keeping up with the madness.
