  3. for over three decades NZ #MarsdenFund supported investigator-led research. It enabled ideas to flourish AND motivate applied results in a way that I don't think you see in bigger systems. And certainly in ways that I don't think decision-makers understood.

Well not anymore... I guess we'll see how it actually plays out. It certainly has all the words - bold, towards, ambitious, long-term, and of course.... "focus on delivering impact for New Zealand". This stuff is so great I should think we'd invest more rather than less?

  8. To give immigration in NZ context:

Withholding just one full time GP from NZ means that about 1500 Kiwis lose healthcare continuity and are probably subjected to random, less familiar, corporatised services. That definitely includes aged people AND young people with multiple complicated conditions and high need for continuity prescribing medications to avoid health crises.

This is only one area where anti-immigration rhetoric totally shafts Kiwis in day to day life.
The far right use of it as a kicking ball is heavily intertwined with Disaster Capitalism - often overseas ultra-wealth profiting from causing chaos and downgrades of quality of life, at far distance. And of course, greedy, power-seeking puppets will always dress it up as 'common sense' to get publics to harm themselves, as long as backdoor funding continues. They just keep plucking paranoia, playing the 'everyday' person while profiting at everyone else's expense.

  15. In 2023, 34% of NZers wanted immigration reduced - the lowest since 1999. Only 0.6% named it their most important issue. NZ First and ACT seem to be betting 2026 is different.

In 2023, NZ First voters most opposed (54%), Greens most supportive (41%). ACT is split - 40% want reduction, 36% want more. A tension for the party's 2026 line.

Salience hit 6% in 2017 (22% among NZ First) when they campaigned on it. Whether 2026 matches is an open question.

  17. The hand-wringing of Nicola Willis, Luxon, and other political commentators about the level of NZ government debt is much more about ideology than economics or reality.

NZ government "debt" doesn't work in the way that household or business debt does, by virtue of the fact that NZ issues it's own currency. By convention, NZ issues bonds in relation to the budget deficit (i.e. how much more the government spent than was recovered via tax).

Willis, Luxon, et. al. love to tell us that we're living "beyond our means" as a country. Surely then they would advocate running budget surpluses, repaying "debt" by buying back bonds, and stop issuing new bonds?

And what would happen if we did that? Firstly, household debt (the bad kind) would explode as families tried to fill the gaps left by withdrawing government services.

And secondly, the government would have to keep issuing bonds so that Kiwisaver providers would have a risk-free asset to invest in.

The financial markets know that the NZ government bonds are risk-free, because since they are denominated in NZD they are guaranteed to always pay out interest.

Exactly this happened in 2002 when the Howard Government in Australia proposed exactly this and the financial markets lost their minds.

Basically, without bonds there are no safe-haven, risk free assets for superannuation funds and (though this is obviously much less of a concern), the financial markets are unable to price risker assets if they don't have a risk-free assets to price against.

The takeaway is that the NZ government can't go bankrupt, NZD denominated bonds are therefore risk free, and most of what Willis, Luxon and their ilk have to say about the economy and how it works is wrong

  18. CW: Does NZ have an immigration issue?

NZ Prime Minister Christopher Luxon announced yesterday that "immigration was an emerging political issue..."

But Paul Spoonley says Luxon is offering a solution for a problem which doesn't exist. Our points-based immigration system is discerning, we don't have waves of refugees knocking at our door and the majority of Kiwis view immigration positively.

Prof Spoonley politely suggests that the PM is reacting to race baiting from Act and NZFirst, "both of whom seem to want to make immigration a central issue for the coming election, but also to see immigration as somehow being divisive and an issue for New Zealanders. I don't think it is."

Once again, the tail wags the dog, the Overton window moves another notch to the right and Luxon's inability to lead is on full display.

  24. @ClareBear that last part of your last sentence is what really p*sses me off. What % of those who voted didn't vote for a coalition party. Quite a f*ing lot, really not much below 50%. We get nothing at all, we see our views trampled, policies we believe in trashed.
Maybe there needs to be a supermajority (60%? 2/3?) or even no need to form a 'majority' government. Sure almost nothing would happen but then we also wouldn't be subject to vandals wrecking everything and whoever's coming in to clear up the mes looking bad because they couldn't fix the broken stuff as quickly as it was smashed.

  34. CW: NZ - Dirty Politics II - Maiki Sherman

The National Party has resorted to using Dirty Politics again, this time with Ani O'Brien playing the part of Cameron (Slug Juice) Slater.

Yes, TVNZ's political editor Maiki Sherman did call another reporter a 'faggot', in response to something he'd said to her. But it was it was 12 months ago during a National Party drinks session and she did apologise at the time.

With Luxon's leadership under pressure, National decided it was timely to flick the story to the terf O'Brien and another good journalist becomes the story then is lost.

Here's a whole bunch of reactions to Sherman being "hounded" into resigning. Most commentators are equally disgusted by TVNZ's decision to hang out their star reporter to dry with no obvious support in place.

I'm old enough to remember when TVNZ was still a public service broadcaster.

  40. CW: NZ - Luxon vs OECD

In their annual country report for NZ, the OECD concluded that National's over-priced gas terminal locking in fossil dependence is, and I paraphrase, a stupid idea.

"... and instead recommended investment in non-gas generation like biomass or pumped hydro."

But Christopher Luxon reckons that he knows better than the OECD and claims that their warning on the government's LNG plans are "a load of rubbish."

"Luxon said the coalition government was not going to tolerate "bumper sticker" policies or the sort of "kumbaya and mush" that Labour pursued while it was in power."

Putting aside the immorality of promoting fossil fuels over renewables, a deeply unpopular NZ Prime Minister describing the collective wisdom of the OECD as "kumbaya and mush" is one for the record books.

Dunning-Kruger appears to be getting the better of our PM. The man's an utter embarrassment.
