  3. The ACT Party’s climate policy is idiotic and deceitful.

NZ’s pledge to halve emissions by 2030 was already insufficient and then further weakened by accounting tricks, rollbacks, and a relaxed methane target.

Independent ratings do NOT see NZ as more ambitious than other countries.

    It's blatant climate denial.

  8. @rnzbot_political So, one of the political parties in NZ’s coalition government that pushed the NZ economy into a recession, drove up unemployment rates, and sent young people overseas looking for better paid jobs, is now campaigning on needing to mine and quarry NZ’s conservation land to make jobs.

Be sure to vote this year.

“New Zealand's labour force hasn't grown in the past 12 months, but you wouldn't know that by looking at its unemployment rate. Thousands of Kiwis have left their country for Australia, and others have become disenchanted by the job search and given up looking for work. If those people had stayed in NZ, and were counted among the unemployed, NZ's unemployment rate would be much higher. It's a very different story in Australia.”

  9. Heard all the excuses:

"You've taken it out of context"
    "There were other flags"

And yet we can plainly see that it's a bunch of white people in New Zealand hanging under the confederate flag, around a shock-jock who spent his tenure promoting anti-Maori sentiment.

They're getting together, not to figure out how to make living costs more affordable, or fix transport and healthcare, oh no, the singular issue on the agenda, is all around how to further disenfranchise Maori and limit their sovereignty via te tiriti, so they can cut up more of the land for foreign-owned real estate, that leaves everyone else worse off, with ever increasing rents and rates, because they have no imagination or vision on how to diversify our economy beyond tourism, farming and property speculation.

The "stop making it about race" crowd, are too dense and entitled to have the self-awareness that they are literally on a south Pacific island nation, with one of the largest pasifika diaspora in the world, engaging in politics that centre European descendants as "victims" of whatever flavour "woke" they're offended by this week, instead of recognising that they are beneficiaries of colonial destruction and having accountability for the cultural demise and real suffering experienced by minorities under this system; a system that constantly shifts the goal posts, with stagnant wages, inflation and a practical enslavement to the fossil fuel industry and American military industrial complex.

We keep calling them out, yet any suggestion to approach things differently to the status quo is immediately viewed as hostile to pakeha, rather than a recognition that repeating the same thing over and over expecting different results is the text-book definition of insanity.

We are a Maori-first nation, a Pacific island nation, there is zero justification for trying to import American confederate era rhetoric here, unless you are a brainwashed, conspiracy-addled xenophobe, which THEY ARE! #nzpol

  14. CW: A little bit sweary

Every time we go to Wellington and walk around the central city, amongst all the older buildings, public art and sculpture and metal things, some of which make no sense to me at all, but all of it makes it a properly lovely place to be. Even when it's not one of those days that you can't beat Wellington, it's still a bloody lovely place to be, even with the wind chill, we love it all.

And then these ACT morons want to stop money being spent to make the places we live not a shithole?

  17. @jeremy_pm I had this discussion all the way back when I was at Auckland Uni (many years ago)

Yes they get an advantage in getting a place to study medicine, but that is IT they need the exact same skills marks to qualify.

IF Seymour thinks people are being denied the opportunity to be in medical courses who should be there RAISE THE NUMBER OF PLACES

    #NZpol

  18. @ArrestJK

I made the mistake of listening to #RNZ Midday Report today.

The first story was David Seymour saying he was determined to end the allocation of spaces at #NZ Medical Schools for Māori and Polynesian medical students as these, according to Seymour, were giving an advantage to students due to their race. He managed to get a study done into the practice of increasing the number of Māori and Polynesian doctors to serve their communities under the coalition agreement but didn’t agree with its findings which support the practice.

He disagreed that a similar approach to offering places at medical school for rural students was the same thing as apparently it is not based on ethnicity.

The next story was David Seymour supporting MDMA treatment for victims of PTSD. I have no idea what the story after that was as I had switched off my radio by then. #NZPol

  21. I really, really want the #NZPol conversation on the economy to zero in on the harm caused by monetary policy and neoliberal policies in general. The OCR hike this week could be a real flash point for the opposition if they can seize the narrative.

Tightening credit will only force more struggling businesses to close, shed staff, trim orders, and kill the vibe in general. Meanwhile, the very real things that are making it tough for families - rent, power, petrol, food, GP visits - won't come down a cent, and the number of rough sleepers, patients in the corridors of EDs, and highly skilled 20-30 somethings moving across the ditch will continue to rocket upward. That's the Luxon/Willis version of fixing the basics.

  22. Before Ed Zitron turned his incandescent laser of scathing critique on the resource misallocations, ridiculous hype, financial shenanigans, and sheer managerial idiocy that is #AI mania, he was making some incisive observations on the modern-day rot economy. In this week's piece, he lays out a compelling background arc that should be required reading for the #NZPol media and voting public.

Basically, the first part of the essay does a brilliant job of knocking over all the arguments about public sector spending being the root of all evil where inflation is concerned. It's corporate greed and profiteering, layered on top of structural drivers like climate and war induced scarcity and supply chain bottlenecks.

    Very much worth the read.

  23. Why did Luxon, NZ's PM, turn himself into the world's weakest 'why did the chicken have cognitive problems crossing the road' joke ever?

  26. National's budget will announce more cuts to the civil service, as if all departments haven't been pared to the bone already.

Chris Hipkins was just quoted on Morning Report as saying Labour could work with National on that, because AI can replace people.

Following last week's offer to work with National on infrastructure, the subservient leader of the opposition seems intent on cosying up with the devil and in the process, moving Labour to the right. And he's swallowed the AI-infused coolaid.

I'm old enough to remember when Labour would have unreservedly stood up for people and jobs, simply because it was the morally correct thing to do.

  28. CW: Oil crisis - NZ Labour finds its voice

Chris Hipkins pops up after a long absence and claims National are not prepared for the incoming oil shock.

Given the IMF's warning that the fuel crisis is likely to lead to a global recession, Hipkins seems close to the mark.

Luxon responded, that was why the government was "focused on avoiding the mistakes seen during the Covid response."

Pardon? Is this somehow Labour's fault?

It seems bizarre that Luxon isn't considering options like carless days and working from home, as many other countries are already doing. Especially when NZ is right at the far end of the supply chain.

    ---

Please... take a moment to appreciate this classic gobbledygook from Luxon as he tries to think on his feet.

"What I agree with is we want this resolved as quickly as possible. We want the parties negotiating, I know ceasefire negotiations, you know, we want ceasefire will remain holding, we want the parties negotiating a negotiated settlement."

It's embarrassing that this inadequate man leads our country.

All Blacks traditionally tend to vote National. However former AB captain Taine Randell has been selected as the Tukituki (Hawke’s Bay) candidate for NZ First. The seat is currently held by National.

  30. I don't understand why Labour is sticking with NZ's least effective political leader. When he does hit the headlines it's in the Woman's Weekly instead of serious media. We hear plenty about him leaving his wife and kids and marrying his floozie and the subsequent fallout from that mess.

But no policy. No passion. No soul.

Chippy lost the last election and he can easily do it again.

    abc.net.au/news/2025-11-20/nz-

This is an appallingly transphobic act by the government of Aotearoa New Zealand.

And, shame on the ABC for uncritically giving their platform to disingenuous TERFs and "both sides"-ing the issue. One "side" is a government of right-wing extremists who are repeating the evils we've seen other extremist governments do, such as racism with genocidal intent and, in this instance, removing the human rights of LGBTQIA+ people with the knowledge and intent that their actions will cause harm and will cost lives. The other "side" is transgender children who need respect, support, and medical care. Trans rights are human rights.
