The money raised by taxing billionaires out of existence will do more than help with the budget. Taking their money would make it impossible for billionaires to buy governments and write budgets to benefit themselves.

  11. Sweden, a ‘paradise’ for the ultra-rich, debates a billionaire tax ahead of elections.

Regarded as one of the most egalitarian countries in the world, the number of billionaires in Sweden has continued to rise while poverty has increased.

Ahead of the 13 September elections, taxing the wealthiest has become a major campaign issue.

  12. Oh good. Even more centralisation. Just what the most overcentralised wee country (that's actually a medium sized country but thinks it looks cuter if it pretends to be small) urgently needs.

Not #ClimateAction; not #ScottishIndependence; not #LandReform; not #WealthTax; not #LocalDemocracy. Nope, none of that. Just mash all the health boards into just two, and everything will be sorted.

Remind me, why did we vote for these clowns?

Fiscally hawkish EU countries are pushing for a smaller seven-year budget, prompting debate over taxing billionaires to fill the gap, with Nomura's George Buckley saying taxes must rise sharply to make a real difference. #News #Reuters #Newsfeed #EUBudget #GeorgeBuckley #Nomura #BillionaireTax #Brussels #EuropeanUnion #EUElections #FiscalPolicy #WealthTax #EuropeNews #BusinessNews #WorldNews #BreakingNews

I think that shift is starting to take place. A dawning realization that the first incarnation of #SocialMedia in all its enshitified “glory” has hurt our children, violated our privacy, destroyed our social fabric, and degraded our democracy

We can see the money piling up, it is time for progressive taxation so we can get basic government services back.

  23. Wealth tax for 1 billion dollars:

    5% = 10 million
    10% = 100 million

Billionaires would recoup than in no time which is why it can’t be 5% nor a one time tax. It needs to be higher and more frequent. Billionaires shouldn’t exist and are a parasite class.

  24. A Plan for Equality & Prosperity Within Planetary Boundaries
    A habitable world is possible

"The Global Justice Report is part of a broader international agenda for planetary habitability, social justice, and reform of the global financial architecture."

"The Global Justice Project attempts to set out a new vision for global progress in the 21st century: grounding human development and equality in planetary habitability. It explores the conditions under which the world could move toward this horizon and traces an economically and ecologically consistent transition path from 2026 to 2100." >>
    globaljusticeproject.wid.world/

    Summary: The Global Justice Report
A Plan for Equality & Prosperity Within Planetary Boundaries
"It is possible to reconcile planetary habitability and high well-being for all, but only if the transformation rests on three pillars simultaneously. Fast decarbonization of energy systems is necessary. But we also need a major shift toward sufficiency – understood as a sharp reduction in labour hours and material footprint and large changes in consumption patterns, food habits, land use, and forest cover. In addition, neither decarbonization nor sufficiency can be financed and politically sustained without a drastic reduction in inequality of income, wealth and power, both between countries and within them. The compression of global inequality is not only compatible with deep decarbonization; it is a necessary condition for shared prosperity on a finite planet." >>

  25. The so called backlash to "tax wealth, not work" is either disingenuous or confused. They claim it won't work because it won't raise enough revenue but that's not the point of a wealth tax. The point is to reduce inequality. A wealth tax is a way forward in that direction.

#DemocraticSocialists of America propose radical overhaul of US govt

The Democratic Socialists of America want to fight for working-class Americans by offering #FreeHealthcare and abolishing the U.S. Senate [sic]. What else does their #WorkersDeserveMore platform say?

    by Emily R. Condon
    Updated Aug. 2, 2026,

Excerpt: "Although not all self-described #DemocraticSocialists are in the Democratic Socialists of America, the DSA is an increasingly influential player on the left. Members include New York Rep. #AlexandriaOcasioCortez, New York City Mayor #ZohranMamdani and Michigan Rep. #RashidaTlaib, all Democrats. Three Democratic nominees for U.S. House of Representative seats – #DarializaAvilaChevalier and #ClaireValdez in New York and #MelatKiros in Colorado – also belong to the group, as do a growing list of state and local officials.

"A third of #Democrats identify as democratic socialists, according to a July 30 CNN poll, but it's possible that quite a few of those are not familiar with some of the DSA's more unusual suggestions for overhauling the U.S. government. A July 28 Reuters/Ipsos poll revealed that 47% of Americans say they don't understand democratic socialist policies.

"While President Donald Trump and his GOP allies slam democratic socialists as
'#communists,' the Democratic Socialists of America is defining its own brand in the new platform.

"The 120,000-member organization's policy roadmap has three sections:

    - Thriving Working-Class Communities
    - Working-Class Foreign Policy
    - Working-Class Democracy "

It’s not encoded in our DNA—in fact, we are much more naturally inclined toward cooperation than competition. Humans have a virtually infinite number of ways we can arrange society, and we are in desperate need of rethinking ours.

"Because for the last few decades, the American economy has grown ever more off-balance, to the point where many analysts now say we’re in a second #GildedAge. We recently minted the world’s first trillionaire, while about half of us would be wiped out by any major illness, accident, or job loss. Workers have lost power, essentials like housing and healthcare are increasingly out of reach, and practically all the gains of our productivity have been accumulated at the very top, with #corporations posting record profits. #Billionaires are multiplying their wealth faster than ever, building anti-revolution doomsday bunkers, and plotting to rule their own fiefdoms as #CEOKings.

  32. Gary with a really concise segment on wealth tax:

    youtube.com/shorts/V2M0_T-l2LE

It really does seem like one fundamental choice: As per Gary, either people with wealth and power taking all the rest from the less powerful, or (if these are the words) democratizing power/wealth via the right taxes.

(And will Labour finally listen and save the UK... I feel like Starmer maybe has a moment of opportunity here.)
