  1. Opportunity Party Tax Policy dropped - UBI _ move to property based tax to leave (checks notes) 70% better off, and only the top 10% of wealthy paying more.

  2. "There's a rule in politics, that when politicians start attacking the media, they know they're losing. They know that they're going down in the polls, and they're trying to find someone to blame."

  3. "Fisheries Minister Shane Jones overrode official advice a $50,000 fine for leaking footage from fishing boat cameras - five times the penalty under the Privacy Act - would be 'unreasonable'."

    Overriding official advice to pass deeply corrupt policy into law seems to be a hobby for NatACT First. It's like they're trying to fill a bingo card, by ignoring advice from every government department.

  4. Some very important points made here, validated by what I am concerned about watching the life of a GP relative. Exploiting them with work demands requiring hours far beyond the contracted number is widespread abuse of professionals trying to help the population.

    - NZ GPs are doing about 46% of their work unpaid - often after hours and on weekends.

    - Data shows that having a regular GP makes people 30 percent less likely to need to be admitted to a hospital.

    - Data also shows that having a regular GP leads to a 30% reduction in all-cause mortality or death.

    - New Zealand is about 2000 GPs short of what Australia has, and Kiwis deserve better. They do not deserve to be downgraded to higher risk by way of pharmacists or "physicians' assistants' acting as if they have training or overall perspective they don't have.

    'Broken funding model' and 'anti-GP ideology' causing GPs to leave jobs, doctor says - RNZ News

  5. "It's very interesting that a party that courted Chinese voters for so long with 'low tax' promises, now wants to reintroduce something close to the 19th-century poll tax levied on the Chinese."

    #TzeMingMok, 2026

    Isn't it just. ACT were still courting the Asian immigrant vote with their endorsements in the 2025 local body elections. Now they seen to be turning on them, to compete with Winston First for the anti-immigrant vote.

  6. The Nats are stuck between a rock and a hard place with their vacuous leader;

    rnz.co.nz/podcast/focusonpolit

    They have a deeply unpopular leader who the electorate have got to know very well. A smug, entitled reciter of empty talking points, fairly unlikable and mostly disliked.

    But if Nats replace CLuxon with someone whose personality isn't pasted on, it might lift their party's polling, but either Rimmer or Peters could trigger an early election

  7. "We've had 4 or 5 decades... of an economic system that says 'don't worry about concentration of wealth, eventually that will flow down, everyone will be better off', and a lot of people are going, '... that's not what we're experiencing, the cost of living is getting more, we're feeling more marginalised economically, our jobs are less secure', and they want something different"

  8. Also, is it just me, or has Shame Jones started looking like one of the skeksis from The Dark Crystal?

    beehive.govt.nz/minister/hon-s

    I wonder where his gentle mystic half is hiding out, maybe Golden Bay or Coromandel? Maybe there's a Motherstone we could find and return the missing half of, so we can save old Otis Claw from this half-man state of being?

    So there you have it folks, from the horse's mouth. Labour have learned nothing from 2017. They'd form a coalition with the ghost of Hitler's cock if it got them back on the govt benches. They deserve to lose in Nov.

  13. "Now what happens to Winston Peters doesn't matter. But what happens to the people does."

    #WinstonPeters, Juggernaut 2, ep 2, 2025

    thespinoff.co.nz/podcasts/jugg

    It's hard to believe now given the smiling crocodile he's become. Political principles up for auction, doing whatever is best for Winston Peters and bugger anyone else. I think at the time he really meant this.

    His corruption is perhaps the saddest political story of NZ corporatism.

  14. "And yes, our current Minister of Finance is a woman. Funnily enough, our two worst ones have been. Which only proves the point: this isn’t about gender or personality. It’s about an ideology so deep in our political bloodstream that even good people end up preaching the same sermon. The uniform changes; the script doesn’t.

    They call it responsibility. We call it what it is: looting."

  15. Another one from the 'oooh, that didn't age well' files;

    "This year we are fortunate that New Zealand First will be the strongest has ever been and that will present a chance to change the system away from pure neo-liberal ideals which have let us down and collapsed most of provincial New Zealand."

  16. Hipkins is still humming the same tune he was singing a year ago, the 'no new ideas about tax policy' march;

    omny.fm/shows/the-bradbury-gro

    Why the f%$k not Chippy? Both TPM and the Greens had wealth tax cards on the table in the last election, and *grew* their vote from 2020. Labour didn't, and haemorrhaged support.

    Taxing wealth accumulation is financially sensible, ethically justified, and popular. Find a f%&king spine Labour, commit to a policy!

  17. When news media are reporting budget figures for public infrastructure projects, they tend to just quote them verbatim. But it might lead to a more informed public debate on infrastructure, if they reported the costs as per-year estimates. In other words, take the budgeted cost of building or buying something, divide by the number of years it's projected to last, and report it as '$N per year, over P years'.

    (1/?)

    #NZPolitics #PublicSpending #infrastructure #NewsMedia

  18. Maybe we need a long term decision-making process for #infrastructure spending that isn't hostage to the shifting political winds?

    What if any capital spending projected to span multiple governments needed a supermajority in Parliament? Or to pass a referendum at an election? Either way, politicians would be forced to take a nonpartisan, long term approach to planning, building and maintaining infrastructure.
