  1. Whenever any stranger compliments me, when I'm fully masked up - I tell them, only true cool people mask up without being told to do so. You can be cool like me too. Start with wearing a mask.
I use visual privileges, because most humans judge others visually first, to say things that strangers don't expect to come out of my mouth.

  6. A quotation from Herbert Hoover

You convey too great a compliment when you say that I have earned the right to the presidential nomination. No man can establish such an obligation upon any part of the American people. My country owes me no debt. It gave me, as it gives every boy and girl, a chance. It gave me schooling, independence of action, opportunity for service and honor. In no other land could a boy from a country village, without inheritance or influential friends, look forward with unbounded hope. My whole life has taught me what America means. I am indebted to my country beyond any human power to repay.

Herbert Hoover (1874-1964) American engineer, bureaucrat, US President (1929-33)
    Letter (1928-06-14) to George Moses

  8. "Every 'no' is a vote for a future 'yes.'"- Futurist Jim Carroll

    --
Futurist Jim Carroll is writing a series, The Art of the Infinite Pivot, based on 36 lessons from his 36 years as a solo entrepreneur, working as a nomadic worker in the global freelance economy. The series is unfolding here, and at pivot.jimcarroll.com.
    --

In the global freelance economy, the pressure is relentless: take everything that comes through the door. Chase every lead. Never leave money on the table. Never turn down an opportunity.

    Hustle.

    I get it.

I've lived that reality since 1990.

Here's the thing - the tone for the hustle is set right out of the gate. When you're in year one of running your own thing, every email feels like the difference between making it or not. You say yes to almost anything because the alternative of an empty calendar is terrifying. I've lived that reality for a long time. My early years on my own were a frantic hustle of saying yes to anything that looked like it might pay the bills.

But here is what I've learned in the 36 years since: the pivots that worked weren't built on the things I said yes to; sometimes, they were built on the things I said no to.

Every no is a vote for a future yes.

From 1998 to 2001, I was doing, perhaps, 80 to 100 events per year. 4 keynotes in 4 days in 4 different cities all across North America. Travel, a full schedule, prep time. It was exhilarating, but at the same time, I was raising a young family with my wife, writing even more books about the Internet, participating in book tours, and so much more. And when the dot.com collapse happened in 2001, I was not quite prepared to reinvent - to pivot - at the speed the future demanded. It wasn't until 2004 that I finished writing my book, What I Learned from Frogs in Texas: How to Save Your Skin with Forward Thinking Innovation, that I was able to escape the tech lable nd move into the innovation/futurist branding.

I look back sometimes and realize I lost three years that might have made my pivot to a new future easier. I didn't - because I didn't make time for the necessary pivot, because I was too busy saying yes.

I learned a very powerful lesson.

It's hard to think about, but ultimately, saying YES to everything will eventually get in the way of your success.
Keep reading the full post in the link: there's more on why saying NO is the best way to get to YES more often.

    ---

Futurist Jim Carroll has come to learn that the potential negativity in saying NO is one of the most powerful ways to get to the positivity of saying YES.

  9. A quotation from Malcolm X

Hence I have no mercy or compassion in me for a society that will crush people, and then penalize them for not being able to stand up under the weight.

  10. #ThoughtProvoker 🤔

The fun of #SX is that you don't have to learn it, nor do you have to get it taught to you.

Like chess you should #experience it to gain #experience, and you do that by meeting other #people and #practice it. By #SocialExperience with your friends and peers in the chess world #SocialGraph. Weaving #SocialFabric where you can be playful, creative and do experiments, engage in #challenges. This keeps one intrinsically #motivated to stay into the #game. Learn more. Enter a virtuous ⭕ circle of rewarding #exercises.

And perhaps one day. Suddenly and unexpected, #opportunity finds you to play against #MagnusCarlsen. And WIN!

The important thing is: You need not have any *expectation* for that. And most people shouldn't, as it is boils down to 'hanging yourself up to a Vision' if you simply don't possess the 'chess genius gene'. Most people don't.

However you can still #Dream about beating Magnus one day to have fun at every level of your progression path to mastery.

  11. #ThoughtProvoker :blobhyperthink:

@laurenshof wrote fabulous reports analysing our #SocialWeb and sadly this included raging techno-ideological #ProtocolWars too. How can we turn that to #Progress?

So much friction and heat in the raging discussions #ActivityPub vs. #ATProto 😭

🔮 What is *much* more relevant in #Bluesky vs AP is WHY ❔ Bluesky + ATProto gets the bigger uptake, despite compromising on #moral and #ethical values and #principles we hold dear.

Knowing the answers to that is where #opportunity for strategic action comes from. And subsequently following what you may call #FocusedPragmatism instead of just 'wild-coding' the chaotic #fedi with countless independent, uncoordinated "Show, don't tells" of yet more code to shove onto the #BigBallOfMud that fediverse-we-have increasingly represents.

    #ActivityPubAPI provides such Opportunity.

To revive on a *greenfield basis* doing #Protocol design and adopt lessons-learned from APv1 #Microbloggosphere vs. #Atmosphere.

  12. "If you are feeling overwhelmed by the speed of change, join the global club!" - Futurist Jim Carroll

To work at the leading edge of AI today is to work with a world that is moving at an astonishing speed. All around you. It's a world of fast-moving developments. To name just a few:

At the end of January, a new ‘agentic AI’ platform, now known as OpenClaw, was released to the world by a software developer. Use and adoption exploded overnight as the global tech community installed, explored, and began working with it (I’ve yet to jump in). Just yesterday, Nvidia announced a corporate enterprise version of the concept known as NemoClaw, which addresses many of the security and other concerns of the original software. We've never seen software that has gone from the release of a concept to a scalable, corporate enterprise version at such a speed.

That’s but one aspect of fast-moving change. The very concept of how we use AI is changing. In the last few weeks, Claude Copilot and Claude Cowork have taken the world by storm. I’ve spent the last few weeks working with the latter, using it to fix x up some aspects of my home automation system, help with editing my latest book, exploring issues related to my spinal injury, and managing a little biographical project I’ve been working on. The change with what this software brings is profound — I no longer ask an AI a question, I instruct the AI what work I want it to do.

Other new platforms are emerging all around us. Today’s image was generated by using a new feature on a presentation AI I use, gamma.app. I simply instructed it with the type of image I wanted and the words I wanted to use, and I quickly had 3 options to choose from. (I chose one, flipped it into Canva, and placed a photo on top.) Hours later, Google announced Stitch By Google, which, by all indications, should do the same type of thing.

To understand AI, you’ve not only got to understand how quickly it is moving, but what exactly IS moving.

And to understand AI, you’ve got to commit to being overwhelmed by the speed and breadth of what is occurring all around you.

Sometime last year, I observed that watching AI is like watching the emergence of the Internet in the 90’s. And right now, it’s like we are in our Netscape moment. When that software appeared, people around the world realized that the nature of the Internet had changed forever, and that the world was, at that moment, a world of unprecedented opportunity.

We’re at the Netscape moment right now.

    ----

Futurist Jim Carroll lived through the 'Netscape' moment in the 90s and was astonished by the creative energy it unleashed around the world. This new moment is even bigger.

  13. I don't know for sure but I think I just lost a #friend over being too #forgiving in the moment.

Sorry not sorry. I don't stand for what I can't #become as such.

I do what I can to #embrace all #people who #appreciate who I am. It's all I can do, and if that #means my #contribution towards #friendships isn't meant to #last then so #be it. But if it does, they're really #rare and I #cherish them because they're very easy to #lose over #something you thought you could #understand at the time.

    I'll #say this.

All #echo #chambers are the #primary #reason as to why a #friendship falls apart. Because I've seen this #effect everyone to the point of no #return possible, and honestly...you can't get along with people who spend more of their #time invested into something other than what you are doing with that person together. And I don't think I'm alone in wishing that at times, such an #investment cultivates #familiarity over #routine on a continuous basis.

But you know what? I still appreciate the chance to #care for all it is #worth as such. I do my best to live #life with no #regrets to count on #growing without me there to #manage them.

It's my own #fault for putting a bit of my #soul into everything I do alongside my #heart and #mind accordingly. And as afar as I #know there's no #changing that, at least in a very easy way.

If you ever truly #need #friends by your side, you'll know whether they're people you can #count on or not, by the way they #treat your #ambitions as an #individual person.

You can still #respect someone if they do not #acknowledge that you have any. But the chances of you becoming #close, are not as great.

With that being said, you do not need to #support the same #ambition someone else does, in order to be friends. You just need to set your #ego aside so that such a person can fulfill their #desire the best way they know how to.

That's what I do, and I carry a lot of #weight because of it. All of the #memories set aside because the soul wasn't ready to let go of the ones #entrapping their #conscious #focus throughout seemingly more #important issues outside of my #control in all of the #moments they last.

Putting my best #self forward, means respecting that and not forcing the #matter at hand. It doesn't make that #feeling go away, born of lost #opportunity at the #core of #potential #reciprocity as such.

But yes #indeed I know #hope is not so easily broken by #fragile #futility alone. Which is why I continue to #forgive but not #forget all of the ways life makes a different #path #unfold into #being by the #presence of #purpose for everyone.

  14. "It's all fairway when you put in the work!" - Futurist Jim Carroll

If you golf, you know instantly when you hit a great tee shot. And as a speaker, you know instantly when one moment has suddenly changed some lives and an industry. As a golfer and speaker, I've had both moments.

Let's start with golf. In my last few rounds - including yesterday - I've been hitting 100% of fairways consistently. This is a good thing, but it's only happening because I've put in the work. My irons are also, as the vernacular goes, 'dialled in,' pretty consistently hitting within 10 or 20 percent of my target. Golfers obsess over stuff like this.

As a futurist and innovation speaker, I also obsess over the quality of my work.

If you golf, you will know that today is the opening round of the PGA of America golf tournament.

One of my career highlights was back in 2010 when I keynoted the annual general meeting of the PGA of America, the organization that hosts this tournament. Most folks don't understand who the real 'PGA' golfer is who would be a member of this association, and who were at my talk. The folks in the room were not the Rorys and Brysons and Xanders- it was the hard-working local club pro at your golf club. The one who teaches lessons and runs the pro shop, who joins you on Mens Day or Ladies Day, manages the golf course, and hires all the other professional golf staff. Some of them might have competed on tour as a PGA Tour player (a different association!), but many simply love the game of golf and have built a career out of successfully running your local golf club.

And back in 2010, unlike today, the industry they were working in was facing a reckoning.

And somehow or other, I was selected to be the opening keynote speaker for their AGM. My job was to come in and provide insight into the trends that might provide them with opportunities for growth in the future. And that was the entire focus of this AGM - the meeting tagline was 'Grow the Game.' Not only that, my marching orders were to help shake them out of their complacency and encourage them to make innovative thinking the core of what they do.

    I piped it.
