  1. Cool Kiwi Science done with Marmite!

    A University of Otago fish expert, Roe Stuart, has found weird new fish super-deep down in large montane lakes in the South Island, lured in with Marmite.

    What a great story. I look forward to finding out more about what these odd fish are.

  6. "... the Department of Corrections had posted a procurement notice on the website of GETS, the Government Electronic Tenders Service. Which is often scanned by journalists looking for stories about budget government spending."

    Not really a secret. So Mitchell not knowing about it is just more evidence that he's not paying attention to what's happening in his portfolio. The kneejerk response is typical though.

  7. "We've had 4 or 5 decades... of an economic system that says 'don't worry about concentration of wealth, eventually that will flow down, everyone will be better off', and a lot of people are going, '... that's not what we're experiencing, the cost of living is getting more, we're feeling more marginalised economically, our jobs are less secure', and they want something different"

  8. "Dr Bryce Edwards is a transparency campaigner, used to run a thing called the Integrity Institute, which had backing to research these issues, now it's called The Democracy Project ..."

    #ColinPeacock, 2026

    rnz.co.nz/podcast/mediawatch?s

    Really? It's news to me that The Democracy Project is a rebranding of the Integrity Institute. I thought the latter was a newer initiative. Can anyone confirm?

  9. "When ad spend on media peaked 20 years ago, advertising accounted for 1.25% of our entire GDP. But now, in this increasingly digital days, it's around 0.75%."

    #ColinPeacock, 2026

    rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/

    So what does this tell us? What all the wailing and gnashing of teeth about the big DataFarms hoovering up most of the remaining ad spend obscures or avoid admitting;

    Advertising is a dying industry. Has been since the net went mainstream.

  10. *But* ... the one thing Hipkins ought *not* to lose his leadership role over is stories about his personal life. His private business.

    None of us are saints, especially in the eyes of puritan ultra-conservatives and crypto-conservative identi-Moonies. Every one of us has skeletons in the closet that scurrilous muckrakers could dig up as a basis to exclude us from political office.

  11. Tararua district caught between anniversary days

    This is why in today's modern world we should do away with anniversary days and merge them into one day celebrated over all Aotearoa --- Let us call it Aotearoa day. What date would you put it on? I was thinking 27 December or May 1st.

    "My boss is a 'frequent flyer' with HR, complaining about quite a range of my behaviours, as they have the right to do, but I think people need that context."

  13. "[Pattrick Smellie says of future news outlets] they'll be smaller, driven by editorial concerns rather than advertising imperatives. Today's ... news publishers he said, both in Australia and NZ, have in practice now become real estate advertising platforms, with newsrooms attached."

  14. Someone needs to let Alex Barnes and Jesse Mulligan know that it's Dave *Winer*, not "Winter", and that RSS is still widely used?), including by all real podcasts(1);

  15. "These days innovating means following the audience and operating online. But those who do are not always rewarded with the required revenue.

    Unless you can get enough online supporters or subscribers to pay, which also means trying to secure digital advertising - and the vast bulk of revenue from that goes offshore to the companies which have cornered that market."

  16. It's so frustrating listening to RNZ's tech commentator Peter Griffin talking about decentralized social media. At least the fediverse got a mention in this one. But he didn't get the key point across to the host, that you only need one account to talk to people on sites using the same protocol. When he described Mastodon it sounded like he was saying you need an account on each server. Also "the" NZ server...

  17. Apropos of today's #KimHill #radioNewZealand interview on the shamaic origins of Santa Claus, here is the structure of a Sami lavvu ...

    flic.kr/p/vm2Y3t

    When it's wrapped in reindeer hide and covered in snow, visitors can only enter the lavvu through the top, which is also the exit for smoke from the hearth fire. Not a chimney so much.

  18. CW: fediverse media coverage

    I searched the RNZ 'all programs' podcast feed today for coverage of the fediverse. I found this interview with Peter Griffin and Mastodon from 10 days ago (which already feels like a year ago ;)

  19. Here's a questionable claim from a NZ public servant:

  20. The *real* road toll ...

    "It shows air pollution kills about 3300 people each year - with vehicle emissions responsible for two thirds of those, nearly 10 times the road death toll."
