  1. Cool Kiwi Science done with Marmite!

A University of Otago fish expert, Roe Stuart, has found weird new fish super-deep down in large montane lakes in the South Island, lured in with Marmite.

What a great story. I look forward to finding out more about what these odd fish are.

  8. "There's no point, basically, paying off your mortgage if your kids are hungry and sick.

So yes, we need to move to surplus, but not at a point where you cut back public services so bad, that's it's difficult for people to ... [for example] get the care they need in our health system ..."

  9. "If I'm really frank, for me [capitalism is] a growth in society in which wealth is accumulated in particular at the top, and less so at the bottom, and it depends on the theory of that wealth being redistributed through ... trickle-down ... It's also a way that our society - probably quite recently - has swung more towards."

  10. Maybe we need a long term decision-making process for #infrastructure spending that isn't hostage to the shifting political winds?

What if any capital spending projected to span multiple governments needed a supermajority in Parliament? Or to pass a referendum at an election? Either way, politicians would be forced to take a nonpartisan, long term approach to planning, building and maintaining infrastructure.

  12. "The five things that you really need in order to grow mass amounts of foods [are], you need capital to pay for the entire production cycle; you need phosphates; nitrogen and potash to fertilise the crops.

Those only come from a few places. And you need a huge amount of petroleum for the fuel, and to bulwark the other additives, things like pesticides."
