  1. @ArrestJK

    I made the mistake of listening to #RNZ Midday Report today.

    The first story was David Seymour saying he was determined to end the allocation of spaces at #NZ Medical Schools for Māori and Polynesian medical students as these, according to Seymour, were giving an advantage to students due to their race. He managed to get a study done into the practice of increasing the number of Māori and Polynesian doctors to serve their communities under the coalition agreement but didn’t agree with its findings which support the practice.

    He disagreed that a similar approach to offering places at medical school for rural students was the same thing as apparently it is not based on ethnicity.

    The next story was David Seymour supporting MDMA treatment for victims of PTSD. I have no idea what the story after that was as I had switched off my radio by then. #NZPol

  6. Another grilling for Quilae Wong and the Opportunity, this time from Mihingarangi Forbes;

    A good interview for those who question whether Opportunity can really be described as "progressive".

  10. "Coalition partners warn voters off The Opportunity Party" - according to #RNZ. No surprise to me: #TOP has enough in common with #Labour and #Green to support them with a potential "confidence and supply agreement" (while agreeing to disagree on some policies - the sort of arrangement #NZ had a while ago) if it cracks the 5% #votes barrier leaving the #CoC well under 50%.

  13. Maybe we need a long term decision-making process for #infrastructure spending that isn't hostage to the shifting political winds?

    What if any capital spending projected to span multiple governments needed a supermajority in Parliament? Or to pass a referendum at an election? Either way, politicians would be forced to take a nonpartisan, long term approach to planning, building and maintaining infrastructure.

  14. "The five things that you really need in order to grow mass amounts of foods [are], you need capital to pay for the entire production cycle; you need phosphates; nitrogen and potash to fertilise the crops.

    Those only come from a few places. And you need a huge amount of petroleum for the fuel, and to bulwark the other additives, things like pesticides."
