I made the mistake of listening to #RNZ Midday Report today.
The first story was David Seymour saying he was determined to end the allocation of spaces at #NZ Medical Schools for Māori and Polynesian medical students as these, according to Seymour, were giving an advantage to students due to their race. He managed to get a study done into the practice of increasing the number of Māori and Polynesian doctors to serve their communities under the coalition agreement but didn’t agree with its findings which support the practice.
He disagreed that a similar approach to offering places at medical school for rural students was the same thing as apparently it is not based on ethnicity.
The next story was David Seymour supporting MDMA treatment for victims of PTSD. I have no idea what the story after that was as I had switched off my radio by then. #NZPol

Today on #RNZ the announcer mentioned that they had used #AI to get some details for their #MorningReport segment. And they admitted an error in reporting as the AI was wrong (shock and surprise).
My confidence in RNZ has just plunged.

Just listened to the #RNZ political panel this week hosted by the far more neutral Suzie Ferguson with commentators Phil Goff and Liam Hehir.
I disagree with the attempts by National Party member Liam Hehir to defend Luxon’s inaction on Winston Peters which is, in my opinion, a huge mistake.
NZ already knows Luxon’s not a leader but had Luxon done what the majority of the country is demanding and that is sack Winston Peters as foreign minister he would have substantially improved National’s chances in the upcoming election and maybe more so had Winston forced a snap election.
I was also interested in Phil Goff’s response to a recent poll of only 400 people that suggests Chloe Swarbrick is at risk of losing Auckland Central to National and his idea that this ridiculously small poll will only give Chloe the opportunity to suggest Ak Central Labour voters give her their electoral vote while still giving Labour their party vote.

I hopped into my car this evening and heard Wallace Chapman say if the Greens focused on saving trees I’d vote for them but with all this other stuff I’m not going anywhere near them.
I wondered if making that statement on air was a breach of the #RNZ charter.
I am considering making a complaint.

Thanks Phil, I shall send them my own feedback and criticism of their failure to uphold the #RNZ Charter particularly in regard to informing the public of the established causes of extreme weather events that are reeking extreme damage across Aotearoa NZ.

@rnzbot_political What a strange half-article to be headlining the #RNZ website, since it summarises ACT’s new policy without giving any historical context or conservationists’ views.
I accept that game animals like deer are a valued resource in NZ and there need to be places to hunt them. Still, that cannot be the whole country. There are plenty of well documented and often massive impacts that deer, goats, tahr, and chamois have on the native species they eat, and many of these species are threatened and declining.
ACT is proposing that the government funds that are currently used by the Department of Conservation to manage games animals while protecting biodiversity all be given to the Game Animal Council for managing game animals nationally.
I’m reminded of comedian Guy Williams’ New Zealand Today piece about tahr management. Tahr numbers ballooned under hunter-led management from the target national herd size of 10,000 to more than three times that. The Department of Conservation (in the previous government) had to step in and started culling tahr to bring their numbers back down, yet there was then an outcry from hunters.
Most of NZ’s conservation land needs to be managed primarily for conservation. It makes sense to do that in collaboration with the Game Animal Council, as is done now. ACT’s policy to flip this around sounds like a recipe for extinctions.

Mihi Forbes presents another timely episode of the very well produced #RNZ series #NZ Wars Stories.
This time Waerenga-a-Hika (Gisborne) recounting the historic #NZPol attack on the #indigenous #Maori November 1865 at Waerenga-a-Hika pā which served as a refuge for hundreds of Māori, many of whom were women and children adhering to the Pai Mārire faith.
I believe this history being understood is critical in navigating a path forward for all people of #Aotearoa #NewZealand.

@AndrewRiddell1 this post prompted me to listen to the latest RNZ headlines. 2nd story was about a study of the effects of flooding in NZ under different emissions scenarios. They didn't mention climate change, carbon, carbon dioxide even though that's precisely what the study was about. Weird.
