"... the Department of Corrections had posted a procurement notice on the website of GETS, the Government Electronic Tenders Service. Which is often scanned by journalists looking for stories about budget government spending."

Not really a secret. So Mitchell not knowing about it is just more evidence that he's not paying attention to what's happening in his portfolio. The kneejerk response is typical though.

"I think Morning Report will definitely be in his sights, and I think he'll want to see better audience ratings from that program, because he'll be comparing it very much to Hosking, at NewstalkZB."
#MarkJennings, Co-Editor, Newsroom, 2026
This is a classic example of the Business Idiocy described in the article by Ed Zitron I've been quoting this morning.

I'm still catching up on MediaWatch as I struggle back to some level of functioning. Today's listen is the June 28 edition, which covers lobbyist Matthew Hooten becoming editor of the capital's daily paper, and the departing editor becoming a lobbyist for Business NZ.

Here's a local example of the "Mirror World" Naomi Klein describes in #Doppelganger;
“I believe that public discourse is damaged when a large platform labels or characterises others negatively, particularly in ways that are untrue, with the purpose or effect of silencing or discrediting them."
#JimGrenon, Canadian billionaire, media mogul, 2026
Quoted by Stuff from Grenon's affidavit;
... and read out on #Mediawatch;

Emile Donovan wants to stick with convention and call Pete Hegseth the "Secretary of Defence";
Why? Given the number of wars the US has started or escalated - at least 1 started during this administration too - I think Hegseth's choice of job title is curiously appropriate.

"There's a whole lot of AI I used that saved a whole lot of grunt work time in the production process and freed me up for creativity. But if you're dealing with an unreliable research tool, and you're checking up on it, you're not saving time, you're adding labour ..."

"Transmission via FM ... is a great way for broadcasters to reach an audience. All you need is 1 antenna to reach thousands of people, if not millions ... in a big city like Auckland, for example, and that costs the listeners absolutely nothing to receive. There's no data plan, there's no time lag.

"Removing content standards such as accuracy, balance and fairness, I think invites a significant political risk. You could end up with a rogue media operator with significant market power that chose to ignore them, with impunity. And I think that's politically dangerous, democratically it's indefensible."

This is a very complicated issue, and I'm still figuring out what I think.

"The five things that you really need in order to grow mass amounts of foods [are], you need capital to pay for the entire production cycle; you need phosphates; nitrogen and potash to fertilise the crops.
Those only come from a few places. And you need a huge amount of petroleum for the fuel, and to bulwark the other additives, things like pesticides."
