While I love that #National's ideological bias has crashed headfirst into reality, let's not forget that even the targets they've hit are bullshit:
Less people in emergency housing ≠ people housed, meeting climate targets ≠ doing enough about '#ClimateChange', less people taking up elective surgery ≠ a well run #HealthSystemJobseeker #s climbing, almost 80,000 over target | #RNZ

This evening Radio NZ rebroadcast a 2016 interview between host Jessie Mulligan and sound archivist Sarah Johnston, about the only recording we have of what the extinct huia bird sounds like.
We lost the huia in the early 1900s, before recording equipment was available, but what we do have is a recording from the late 1940s of Hēnare Hāmana mimicking the calls of the male and female huia. Some North Island Māori were expert at making huia calls, used to lure the birds in to catch them (in part for their valued feathers). Hēnare had been part of a (failed) expedition into the Ruahine Ranges around 1900 to try and catch huia to bring them into captivity to try and prevent their extinction.
While RNZ doesn't have the interview on its website "due to copyright restrictions", the original recording by Hēnare Hāmana is available below on the website of Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision.
It's sad but worth a listen. We came so close to still having these remarkable birds around.

Tararua district caught between anniversary days
This is why in today's modern world we should do away with anniversary days and merge them into one day celebrated over all Aotearoa --- Let us call it Aotearoa day. What date would you put it on? I was thinking 27 December or May 1st.

"China has the largest navy in the world."

You'd hope a defence minister would know, but that's news to me. When did China's navy outstrip the size of the US Navy?

Maybe we need a long term decision-making process for #infrastructure spending that isn't hostage to the shifting political winds?
What if any capital spending projected to span multiple governments needed a supermajority in Parliament? Or to pass a referendum at an election? Either way, politicians would be forced to take a nonpartisan, long term approach to planning, building and maintaining infrastructure.

Hintergrund | RNZ: "Tax me now" - Heidelberger Millionär Peter Reese will endlich "mehr Steuern zahlen"
(weiter)
