Maybe political parties are dead weight in the digital age? Maybe choosing MMP as our proportional representation system was a mistake, because it gives Parliament's supreme power to parties?

CW: MMP. Major parties options possible?
MMP is an interesting beast. So far, NZ has used it to form government by including minor parties. But it isn't limited to include minors only. The outcome can be not very constructive. The present being an example of a disjointed affair.
Maybe the two larger parties need to really think hard about getting heads together and work out a way to get some sensible governance that can actually relate to the majority.
Otherwise, the rabbit holes ,vs mountain s, keep being dug and then get filled back in.

The great thing with #MMP is you can vote Greens without fearing splitting the left votes and handing victory to the right. Historically under FPP National became government despite receiving fewer votes than Labour due to number of electorate seats won by Nats.

The series (both 1 & 2) should be required listening for all Kiwi, not just imports like me to (re)learn our modern history.

NZ got proportional representation elections, in the end, kind of by accident. With 1980s Labour PM David Lange misreading his notes and committing to it, and when Labour reneged, National leader Jim Bolger promised a referendum on it. Thinking kiwis would never vote for it.

Germans in the north have been stonewalled, but in the center and south are making progress, despite many bridges blown by the Americans in the center.
Cubes are Victory Point locations, red for American control and purple for German control. Germans are up to 13 pts.

Labour haven't been effective in opposition since the early 1980s. NZ could have been a one-party state since then (with 2 official factions; NatLabs and LabNats). Luckily folks keen on keeping multi-party representation won us #MMP.

Yes, NZ has Mixed Member Proportional Representation #MMP. Everyone gets 2 votes, one for their preferred electorate candidate and then a vote for which political party you support. It’s the party vote that decides the proportionality of parliament and the parties that collectively have a majority can form the government.
I calculated Aus Greens under MMP would have got 18 seats last election. -
@jfmezei There's lots of info out there eg at @fairvote . Basically a system is proportional if the number of MPs per party reflects the party's share of the vote. The Electoral Commission recommended that Canada adopt a Mixed Member Proportional system where you still elected local MPs but parties would top up the legislature to match their vote share. @JustinTrudeau nixed this, of course.

One of the 1 of 200 hosts asks Marx whether Canada has considered MMP. Apparently they have, but the liberals and conservatives keep blocking it.
I recommend citizens who want proportional representation in their countries campaign for STV, not MMP. I say that having voted in elections using both MMP (NZ general elections since 1996) and STV (some local body elections).

This arrived today. Three maps 12 scenarios and a 6 date campaign game. Eight counter sheets provide enough counters to play it all with only Beyond Valor needed.
One scenario is a monster 12 turn affair on all three maps with more than 60 vehicles in total.
Really nice that they provided color coded acquisition counter sets specifically to be used with each specific set of vehicles and guns, as delineated on counter sheet sprues. This is great, but it begs for a play aid that shows all the associations and color delineations.
Looks great overall.

It's proved to be one of the downsides of MMP, that down-list candidates can become MPs with little to no public scrutiny of their character or background. In hindsight I wish the electorate had chosen STV over MMP in the first referendum. Where they choose which proportional election system would go head-to-head against FPP in the second part of the referendum.

How would it change MMP in NZ if we either;
1) ban coalition agreements, so the tail(s) can't wag the dog. Allowing only supply-and-confidence agreements, with no portfolio positions
OR
2) Oblige the winning coalition to give one Cabinet seat for every six MPs (120 MPs / 6 = 20 Cabinet seats)

Ruth Richardson's comments about MMP in the 1996 Revolution documentary series were typical of neoliberals. Democracy is all very well, she says, as long as it doesn't get in the way of "good government", ie the kind of anti-democratic coup she and Douglas pulled. Even supporters of ACT, who only exist because of MMP, campaigned against it last time there was a referendum.

Third parties are always evaluated in relation to which (if any) of the two legacy parties they may or may not join a coalition government with. As a result, our politics are roughly similar to any state within the US.
