  3. CW: UK politics: Labour MPs pressing for electoral reform

If Burnham does this _one_ thing and gets electoral reform on the way, I will forgive him for every other policies he may come up with (however stupid they may be).

First Past The Post forever prevents sensible governments and sound policy making in Britain. It's exclusionary by design. Adopting some form of proportional representation is what the country needs.

Hat tip to the nearly 100 Labour MPs who push for immediate reform. We hope they stick to their guns and grow in numbers, and that Burnham is willing to take the risk.

PR is also the only way to ensure that the Faragistes don't get a chance to run and ruin the country.

Labour have forever hoped to use FPTP for their own occasional time of one-party rule. Those days are over, comrades, and they won't come back. Let coalition politics become native to the UK system!

  4. My #Burnaby #LiberalMP (whom my wife and I voted in to prevent #PierrePoilievre being elected PM) hasn’t replied to any of my past emails, which are all highly critical of his government’s backtracking on climate and species at risk protections as well as privacy concerns.

Instead, #WadeChang bombards us with glossy propagandist brochures of himself posing with local groups, all virtue signalling to cover over up his turncoat Liberal’s traitorous right wing lurch.

One such picture is with our local wildlife rescue group. Imagine taking a smiling group photo with those rehabilitating the species at risk harmed by your own unethical, deregulated dirty oil projects?! These #CarneyLiberals assume we are all gullable idiots.

I rip up his flashy brochures and recycle them, as they are just another waste of money and resources selling us yet another Liberal lie.

Wade Chang will lose his next election to #Conservatives in large part due to Mark Carney’s selloff of our “left wing #antifa climate terrorist” interests. I will never be voting strategically again, at this point it is #electoralreform or bust for me.

These short sighted, virtue signalling #Liberals will lose their majority and countless future elections by jettisoning their strategic leftwing supporters.

I now believe #Canada deserves it’s true Right Wing Conservative government, enough of this neo-con Mark Carney masquerading as a Liberal.

All you Climate Destroying Liberal supporters deserve #PierrePoilievre as PM. If I could only take back my worthless “elbows up liberal” vote...

  5. I love this idea of natural comparisons between #ProportionalRepresentation and non-PR countries around the world, noting that it's almost like having a scientific control group:

    * Ireland (proportional representation) vs UK (majoritarian)
    * Germany (PR) vs France (majoritarian)
    * New Zealand (PR) vs Australia (majoritarian, despite using Instant Runoff Voting)

    @driusan
It’s incredible how fast #MarkCarney has spent his social capital shifting me from #elbowsup to #fuckcarney.

As “former” swing voters, my wife and I will truly never vote #Liberal again. Trust from the last 10 years to the next 20 has been completely squandered.

What an achievement on their part. Vote #ABC now includes neo-con, war mongering Lieberals. Good riddance to them next election.

Perhaps Carney’s #Canada deserves a #Conservative government after all, seeing how much support #CarneyLiberals are getting with their #divisive right wing lurch.

  7. @fname
There’s also a 37% chance of a 9.0M mega thrust earthquake demolishing the Westcoast of #BC in the next 50 years.

Basically a 1/3 chance of a devastating oil spill crisis hitting the Westcoast, increasing in destructive capacity with every new dirty oil pipeline, which no one in #Canada seems to acknowledge or care about.

#DanielleSmith is a corporate fool saving a sunsetting dirty industry with Canadian tax dollars, #MarkCarney is a corporate tool empowering big business with Canadian tax dollars. Oil soaked albatrosses of a feather wallow together.

I voted against this nonsense. These #Liberals have lied about everything they campaigned on. Shame on them, they are nothing but political hacks.

#MarkCarney used strategic voting to secure his Minority, floor crossers to secure his Majority, and is now employing a shock doctrine strategy while flooding the zone with divisive, unethical projects, stifling criticism and descenting opinions.

We #NDP voters deserved better for voting strategically for Canada over our own interests. Carney short changed us all.

  8. Another advisory body in Canada finds Canadians support electoral reform. The movement gains momentum.

BC all-party committee recommends a Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform! New polling shows BC voters support proportional representation.

BC’s Democratic and Electoral Reform Committee has just released its report, recommending a Citizen’s Assembly on Electoral Reform.

  9. This piece articulates the advantages of ranked choice voting (one kind of proportional representation) far more clearly than I could.

"But while RCV might be strictly non-partisan, it is decidedly pro-voter – and almost always produces a more positive, issue-focused campaign that looks to drive up turnout and appeal to as many people as possible. A ranked-choice campaign rewards engagement and encourages coalitions; it’s a race where instead of tearing down opponents, candidates point out areas of agreement and ask to be a voter’s second choice.

Voters love RCV and find it easy to use. According to a new SurveyUSA poll of New York voters, 96% said their ballot was easy to fill out. More than three-quarters of voters want to keep or expand RCV. And 82% said they had taken advantage of RCV and ranked at least two candidates. (These numbers are similar across RCV elections, and a powerful rejoinder to critics who insist, despite evidence to the contrary, that it’s too confusing.)"

  10. @paige @scarpentier Quiconque s'organise pour tuer le vote uninominal à un tour doit étudier la défaite du BC-STV en 2005 (just saying). Malheureusement, comme disait Reagan, "If you have to explain it, you loose." À moins d'avoir le support des medias ET de la classe politique.

  12. I think #FairVoteCanada needs to be more militant. With respect, perhaps I don't know enough about their communication strategy but from presentations that I have attended it appears they try to engage political leaders in a cooperative fashion. I think they need to be more blunt. "If you don't support electoral reform, you don't support democracy". "If you don't push for proportional representation NOW, then you risk putting the country in the wrong hands" .
    #CanPoli #ElectoralReform

  13. We also have to raise the issue in the media. Perhaps an organized campaign of Letters to the Editor, citing some of the statistics from #FairVoteCanada that show high levels of support for proportional representation and demanding more articles covering the topic. Anytime your see a survey on anything related to elections or policy importance, respond with "electoral reform should be #1".
