  1. @gordonmcdowell @chris

The majority of experts who testified at the ERRE committee gave evidence that proportional representation was the best option for meeting the committee's goals. No one disputed this. That was the consensus. Further, prior to the committee meetings, the members had meetings with Canadians across the country. Most Canadians that the committee members met with cited PR as their preference for electoral reform.

The Liberal members of the committee, however, ignored the evidence and, in the end, chose to inexplicably advocate for Alternative Vote (which, besides a different ballot, is basically the same as FPTP, in that it is a single member riding winner-take-all system --> winner take all is the problem). This led to Maryam Monsef's idiotic ridicule of the Gallagher Index. Ignoring evidence and ridiculing science is often seen with right wing parties. Under no circumstances should either the GPC or the NDP partake in such nonsense.

  2. I haven't read the resolutions for the recent #Debian vote about AI, so I don't know which I most agree with, or how I feel about the one that won.

It is however strange to me to see attacks on the voting system that Debian uses. It's excessively complicated for a political election, but it does indicate which choice the voters prefer.

  3. @ZackPolanski Reform and Reboot should think about . Not as much as Labour should, obviously. They could be quite a lot of people's 2nd or 3rd choice next time.

  4. Burnham electrified the Labour party by talking about electoral reform – now he needs to act on it | Polly Toynbee

The prime minister has lifted the spirits of the public and party members, and must use that goodwill to push through change

  6. If a cap on political donations was part of your agenda for electoral reform in the UK, then I'm afraid you're about to be disappointed by the gap between previous 'commitments' by Andy Burnham & the reality of his political actions.... I'm starting to see a pattern emerging.

  9. Andy Burnham should rip up our undemocratic first past the post system – even if some in Labour disagree | Neal Lawson
    By Neal Lawson

Rearguard reactionaries may try to block the idea of a national commission into proportional representation, but we should want more not less democracy

  10. Why do some Labour MPs want electoral reform and will it happen?
By Peter Walker Senior political correspondent

  11. CW: UK politics: Labour MPs pressing for electoral reform

If Burnham does this _one_ thing and gets electoral reform on the way, I will forgive him for every other policies he may come up with (however stupid they may be).

First Past The Post forever prevents sensible governments and sound policy making in Britain. It's exclusionary by design. Adopting some form of proportional representation is what the country needs.

Hat tip to the nearly 100 Labour MPs who push for immediate reform. We hope they stick to their guns and grow in numbers, and that Burnham is willing to take the risk.

PR is also the only way to ensure that the Faragistes don't get a chance to run and ruin the country.

Labour have forever hoped to use FPTP for their own occasional time of one-party rule. Those days are over, comrades, and they won't come back. Let coalition politics become native to the UK system!

  12. So it looks like electoral reform is moving up the national political agenda with support solidifying into a call for a national commission to report before the next election & a proposal to be part of Labour's election manifesto to seek to secure a mandate to change how the country votes (a change in the electoral system).

There's many a slip twixt cup and lip but this all sounds (perhaps at the moment merely vaguely) promising....

  14. The petition for an independent commission on the electoral system has reached the front page of parliament’s petition site but it needs 100,000 names to get a parliamentary debate. We urgently need to ditch our antiquated FPTP voting system which disenfranchises most of the electorate.

  15. Ontario PR supporters: here is a concrete action.

If you support proportional representation and are eligible to join the Ontario Liberal Party, join through the official OLP page:

    action.ontarioliberal.ca/f/join

Then contact EVERY leadership candidate. Tell them you joined and that support for PR and cross-party cooperation will influence your leadership vote.

Candidate positions are still evolving. That makes now the time to push.

A quiet supporter is easy to overlook. An organized bloc of new members writing every campaign is not.

  16. My #Burnaby #LiberalMP (whom my wife and I voted in to prevent #PierrePoilievre being elected PM) hasn’t replied to any of my past emails, which are all highly critical of his government’s backtracking on climate and species at risk protections as well as privacy concerns.

Instead, #WadeChang bombards us with glossy propagandist brochures of himself posing with local groups, all virtue signalling to cover over up his turncoat Liberal’s traitorous right wing lurch.

One such picture is with our local wildlife rescue group. Imagine taking a smiling group photo with those rehabilitating the species at risk harmed by your own unethical, deregulated dirty oil projects?! These #CarneyLiberals assume we are all gullable idiots.

I rip up his flashy brochures and recycle them, as they are just another waste of money and resources selling us yet another Liberal lie.

Wade Chang will lose his next election to #Conservatives in large part due to Mark Carney’s selloff of our “left wing #antifa climate terrorist” interests. I will never be voting strategically again, at this point it is #electoralreform or bust for me.

These short sighted, virtue signalling #Liberals will lose their majority and countless future elections by jettisoning their strategic leftwing supporters.

I now believe #Canada deserves it’s true Right Wing Conservative government, enough of this neo-con Mark Carney masquerading as a Liberal.

All you Climate Destroying Liberal supporters deserve #PierrePoilievre as PM. If I could only take back my worthless “elbows up liberal” vote...
