  1. CW: UK Politics; Greater Manchester Mayoral Election

I'm a little bit disappointed in my #GMMayor leaflet from the #GreenParty and my recently-elected MP #HannahSpencer. It's a straight up tactical voting message - "Vote Green to beat Reform".

Except this election, as I've mentioned previously, is conducted under Supplementary Vote. That means that you don't need to vote tactically - you give your first preference to who you want to win, your second to who you think best placed to keep the baddies out.

This was the perfect opportunity for the Greens to make a positive case for their platform, and say "If you want these things, vote Greens #1". Instead, they concentrate on scare-mongering, giving more attention to the opponents than their own policies.

  2. CW: UK Politics; Greater Manchester Mayoral Election

The upcoming by-election for the Mayor of Greater Manchester will be under the Supplementary Vote, aka "AV for people who can't count to three".

You get one vote for two candidates; if your primary candidate gets eliminated then your vote transfers to your supplementary choice.

This means that you can, for example, vote Green or another left-wing party, then put Labour as your supplementary choice to reduce the risk of Reform winning.

This is why preference voting is important - it reduces the risk of vote splitting, and means people don't have to vote tactically. So you can actually vote for who you want to win. It's as important as proportional representation in a voting system.

The Tory leadership election has become even more farcical with the surprise loss of James Cleverly. If only there were a better way to select a winner than first past the post or rounds of voting.*

    * There is. It's called Single Transferable Vote / Ranked Preference Voting.
