  2. The hand-wringing of Nicola Willis, Luxon, and other political commentators about the level of NZ government debt is much more about ideology than economics or reality.

NZ government "debt" doesn't work in the way that household or business debt does, by virtue of the fact that NZ issues it's own currency. By convention, NZ issues bonds in relation to the budget deficit (i.e. how much more the government spent than was recovered via tax).

Willis, Luxon, et. al. love to tell us that we're living "beyond our means" as a country. Surely then they would advocate running budget surpluses, repaying "debt" by buying back bonds, and stop issuing new bonds?

And what would happen if we did that? Firstly, household debt (the bad kind) would explode as families tried to fill the gaps left by withdrawing government services.

And secondly, the government would have to keep issuing bonds so that Kiwisaver providers would have a risk-free asset to invest in.

The financial markets know that the NZ government bonds are risk-free, because since they are denominated in NZD they are guaranteed to always pay out interest.

Exactly this happened in 2002 when the Howard Government in Australia proposed exactly this and the financial markets lost their minds.

Basically, without bonds there are no safe-haven, risk free assets for superannuation funds and (though this is obviously much less of a concern), the financial markets are unable to price risker assets if they don't have a risk-free assets to price against.

The takeaway is that the NZ government can't go bankrupt, NZD denominated bonds are therefore risk free, and most of what Willis, Luxon and their ilk have to say about the economy and how it works is wrong

  6. Anzac Day always brings up a lot of emotion. While there is a lot of symbolism to the events, it is at heart a funeral service. In the moments between the Last Post and the Reveille, we remember our dead, as well as those who returned wounded — permanently changed by their experiences in ways both visible and unseen. We call to mind also the sacrifices their families made; of places left empty in homes and hearts.

The commitment we made to remember the fallen is part of a bargain that every service member understands. Those who serve their country don’t do so seeking money, fame, or power. They don’t get to choose the causes for which they take up arms. But they know if they are called on to sacrifice themselves for their comrades, their country, and their cause, then those who are left will ensure their names and their memory live on.

It’s heartening to see Anzac Day services go from strength to strength, the next generation of Kiwis taking up the challenge of keeping these memories alive. Young people, some wearing the medals of their tūpuna, showing up in their thousands to the funeral services of men and women long since dead, who they did not personally know, to show our collective gratitude for that sacrifice.

    We will remember them.

  9. Proud and honoured to be standing as the Green Party candidate for the North Shore in the election this year.

The Green Party is the voice in Parliament advocating for people and planet. We are so lucky to live in this amazing country that has enough for us all. Unfortunately, successive governments have prioritised corporate profits over what’s good for people and the environment, leaving us with crumbling infrastructure, worsening inequality, and an increasingly degraded environment.

Coming from a military background, having the Green Party as my political home might not seem intuitive (we’re not known for voting Green a lot of the time). But it is the values instilled in me during my time in the Navy and the Army that brought me to the Greens; serving our country, looking after each other, and leaving the place better than we found it.

Over the next few months I'll be sharing more about the sort of country that we in the Green Party want to build, and how you can help us create it. Let’s get stuck in, New Zealand.

  10. This is what real political leadership looks like. Take a stand based on principles and well-considered evidence, and stick to it.

The position outlined by both #ChristopherLuxon and #WinstonPeters when it comes to Iran is, by contrast, vague, evasive, and cowardly.

““Oman’s view is that the military attacks against Iran by the United States and Israel are illegal and that for as long as they continue to pursue hostilities, those states that launched this war are in breach of international law,” [Oman’s Foreign Minister] said.”

  15. Great catchup today with the Shore Branch #nzgreens crew as we head into candidate selection meetings next week.

If you’re a Green Party member and live in the Northcote, North Shore, East Coast Bays, Upper Harbour, or Whangaparāoa electorates, head to the Members site and register for the meeting next Sunday the 22nd of March.

  16. Chris #Luxon is very good at not answering any questions. It’s not up to the #US and #Israel to determine if the strikes on #Iran are a breach of international law. It’s up to the international community, including NZ, to determine if their very thin justifications under Article 51 stack up.

The NZ Prime Minister should be able to take a stand, either one way or the other. Not being blown around in the wind of the breath of whichever interviewer is asking him questions at the time.

  20. I really dislike interacting with the walled garden of #LinkedIn, but it seems to have become an unfortunate requirement for finding work these days.

Online spaces for interaction should be based on building community and friendship; not a power grab by gigantic corporations like #microsoft profiting from sucking the joy out of updating your friends on how life’s going.

So if my LinkedIn post about joining the team at #Multitudes was a requirement….
