Our matriarch villager family's ancestral countryside gravesite. My matriarch great-Grandparents' final resting place.
This is a photo with about 1/3 of our remaining overseas family who are still living in a small offgrid village, a few hours South of the Mekong delta/floating market. Our villagers family there are mixed ethnicities, from several generations of marrying people who ended up in South Vietnam after fleeing their homelands. They're all multiple war refugee survivors. Our villagers family speak Vietnamese, Teochew, Cambodian & Laotian languages & have their own mixed linguistics that me & my parents don't understand well.
This was taken in 1988, during Mom's solo trip back to see her family. We couldn't afford for the whole family to return to visit so only Mom went. I went back there with my parents in early 1990s for just over a month.

Talking to him about my idea to create a Saigon War Baby Survivor/AntiWar hat & shirt to wear when in public to raise more community awareness about war survivor Asian diaspora, who are now living on Vancouver Island/BC/Canada. It took my grandparents over 12 years to be able to safely enter & start new lives in South Vietnam. My Dad was born in a refugees camp in Thailand. Then my 3 Aunties were born in Cambodia before they could resettle in Saigon. Unlike USA folks trying to leave - my grandparents & then my parents, decades after, faced live missile bombings & daily gunfire. We also didn't face crossing only land borders - we were at open seas for weeks. We fucking hunted for bugs & rats to eat at refugees camp. We are NOT the same. We understand your desperation. You(most Westerners) are choosing to place your white suffering over hundreds of years of POC sufferings, that are still ongoing.

When BIPOC people say - Check your fucking privilege! If you feel a tiny bit offended - you likely need to do several deeper checks with yourself.

This video resonates with me & my family a lot. However, our family's experience as #Teochew #WarRefugees, leaving Saigon, was a lot more nightmarish & much more violent than this Mom's experience. One of my Aunties had joined the Vietcong as a medic & communications officer, after quitting her job as an ICU nurse & lived in tunnels for several years. We also had no family or friends who were already living in North America so trying to integrate into life here was more challenging.

I can understand everything they say in Teochew. There's only a few words they say differently than we do - I'll do a video with my Mom soon to point out the differences. They speak a form of Teochew #diaspora in Vietnam, that most of us #Gaginang refer to as #Vietnam villagers Teochew. We speak the Teochew that #Saigon gaginang used since early #displacement from #China years back(a long, long time ago).

A popular #Chinese #mukbang #streamer named Pan Xiaoting passed away on July 14, 2024, while she was doing an #EatingChallenge in a #livestream. The 24-year-old #ContentCreator is known for doing extreme challenges online, consuming vast amounts of food for long periods, sometimes 10 hours and more.

According to Hankyung, the autopsy revealed that Xiaoting died due to overeating. Her abdomen was found to be deformed, and her stomach contained an excessive amount of undigested food. The streamer reportedly consumed about 22 lbs of food in individual meals.

Pan Xiaoting's death has sparked a lot of debate on #SocialMedia. However, it must be noted that the incident comes 3 years after #China #outlawed mukbang and #BingeEating content in the country. The Chinese government passed an #AntiFoodWaste #law in 2021 that outlawed citizens from ordering too much food from restaurants and other eateries in an attempt to curb waste. Mukbang has been staple food content in #Asian countries such as #SouthKorea for some time. Usually #liveStreamed or uploaded to platforms like YouTube, such videos feature content creators eating various types of foods for entertainment.
