The same stem developed into Persian بازو bazu, maybe like this:

A bough is an "arm" of a tree, and the Persian word بازو bazu means "arm".

By the way, and for the avoidance of doubt/suspicion: none of the "audio etymology" sequences that I've created and am posting here involve any use of AI, LLM's, neural nets, none of that. All are made from original audio recordings of real people speaking words in their various languages, which are then subjected to good old-fashioned signal processing (speech coding and synthesis). The continua of change are made using straightforward linear interpolation over the space of cepstrograms, which are 2 dimensional matrices encoding the acoustics of the original recordings. Using scripts that I wrote, by hand.

The English word “barrow”, i.e. a burial mound, comes via Proto-Germanic *berga from a Proto-Indo-European ancestor *bʰerǵʰ-os, meaning “height” and by extension “hill, mountain”.
The same Proto-Indo-European root *bʰerǵʰ- also developed into Persian برج borj “tower”:
The Arabic word برج burj “tower”, as in the name of the Burj Khalifa tower, is not a Semitic word but is a loan-word from Persian.
Kurdish برج berdz (Kurmani birc), Balochi برز ئه borza “height”, and English “borough” (originally referring to a town with raised fortifications), are also descended from *bʰerǵʰ-.

The word "khaki" is a loan from Urdu خاکی xākī, a loan from Persian, from خاک xâk "earth", from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eh₂s [ħaχs], something like this (listen):
🔊 https://www.ancientsounds.net/eastern-origins/khaki-from-PIE-h2eh2s.wavEnglish "ash" (the grey-coloured burnt substance) also descends from *h₂eh₂s:
In most Indo-European languages, *h₂ usually developed into [a], but in Iranian it's sometimes [x]. If you want a more detailed but much more technical explanation of the Proto-Indo-European "laryngeals" and how they were possibly or probably pronounced, try this: https://www.ancientsounds.net/laryngeals.html

Is it just me and my neurodiverse brain, or does everyone notice minutiae like this – and then feel compelled to blog about it?
What sorcery is this? 🪄 I often catch myself typing 'anough' for 'enough'. It's also closer to how I pronounce it. I may adopt this spelling out of spite. Does this happen in other languages?

@benjamingeer @NilaJones @ShaulaEvans
Part of the explanation is that pronunciations have changed (diverged) over time, whereas spellings have been slower to change. For example, Old English, Old French, Old High German and Latin all had apical trilled [r], but words with that sound came to be pronounced various different ways. So the present-day variation is not totally random. Also, within each language there are other factors leading to a certain amount of variation. Variation and change are always with us, so it's unwise to expect constancy and uniformity in pronunciation and other aspects of language. -

Hey, if you know #sociolinguistics and #phonetics, there's a beer-money job available at Glasgow University:
(don't be fooled by the salary range -- buried in the fine print we see that it's 0.4 FTE).
https://www.jobs.gla.ac.uk/job/tutor-slash-lecturer-in-phonetics-and-sociolinguistics-lts
This is a reasonable position if ALL of the following are true:
1) you do not have a better job and want an affiliation while looking
2) you want an academic career (ugh, why tho?)
3) You ALREADY live nearby.(open to nearly-PhDs, too)

Audio Etymologies of the Day
Central to the Proto-Indo-European vowel system is the pattern of vowel changes named "ablaut" by 19th c. German-speaking linguists, e.g.:
root: √*s—d “sit, settle”
e-grade: *sed- > sit
o-grade: *sod- > sat
zero grade: *-sd-, in *ni-sd-o > nest
long e-grade: *se:d-i‑ > seat
long o-grade: *so:d-o- > sootsometimes leading to differences between languages. Audio examples at

🆕 On 25 May, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences will dedicate a day to the history of Armando de Lacerda and his Experimental #Phonetics Laboratory, a research that was initiated by Quintino Lopes at the IHC.
In addition, they will launch the book "The Global Periphery: Armando de Lacerda and the Coimbra Experimental Phonetics Laboratory (1936-1979)", the fruit of that work. Congratulations to Quintino! 👏👏👏
