Surely I'm not the first to notice a similarity between the Lojban's apostrophe (that makes the H sound) and the Ancient Greek rough breathing mark โฬ (that makes the same sound).
I've not found any direct evidence that the latter influenced the former (not that I did much research into it anyway) but I like to think there was some secret Ancient Greek admirer among the lojban creators

Here's a tricky puzzle! This section of Greek text appeared in in the (Latin) Einsiedeln itinerary, Einsiedeln MS 326 (9th c.) amidst a bunch of Latin inscriptions and poems. It's Greek-ish, maybe Coptish, but we can't assume the scribe understood Greek as opposed to sort of drawing a picture of some Greek words. The word spacing seems off. Something about petra (either rock, or Peter, or both?) And what are the twisty Ys with a dot in the martini glass?
Something like maybe
"ฯฮฟฮฝ ฮธฮตฮฟฮฝ ฮปฮฟฮณฮฟฮฝ ฮธฮตฮฝฯฮต ฯฯฯ ฯฯ
ฯฮทฮฝ ฮธฮตฮฟฯฮฑ ฯ ฯฯฮฟฮฝ ฯฮตฯฯฮฑฮฝ ฮตฮฝ ฮท

Hmmm, is it bad for me to try and understand the summary of, let's say, Book 1 of an EPIC POEM (The Odyssey), because I don't fully know the backstory behind the Ancient Greek gods?
Or should I read the Iliad first?
Damn

Oh, the word "#love"! So #misused, so #misunderstood! Perhaps because it has too many meanings. AFAIK it covers the concepts expressed by a dozen different words in #japanese. I bet it is the same for other languages. My daughter told me that the Italian noun " #amore" has somehow twelve different words in #ancientgreek: romantic, erotic, friendly, paternal, maternal and so on. Each a different word

So... I kinda went down a rabbit hole trying to make an old "dat ass" meme, but for "dat glass" instead. The original post on tumblr is about what would happen if you showed someone in ancient Greece a yankee candle (well, how much it would sell for). Presumably, they wouldn't be too confused/impressed by scented and colored wax being burned. They wouldn't even be all that interested in tinted/colored glass. BUT, they WOULD be interested in CLEAR glass (because apparently that tech is much newer). Hence, a "dat glass" admiration meme was born.
But me, being foolish, decided, not knowing a lick of ancient Greek, that it'd be funnier if the meme used ancient Greek too instead of English, to go along with the theme/reaction that someone in ancient Greece might have to seeing clear glass. Which eventually brought me to the following translation of "dat glass" into ancient Greek (which, again, I knew nothing of until about one hour ago):
แผก แฝแพฐฮปฮฟฯ แผฮบฮตฮฏฮฝฮท
I *think* โdat glassโ would treat โdatโ as a demonstrative adjective of the subject โglass,โ meaning weโd have โdatโ in the predicate position (แผฮบฮตฮฏฮฝฮท / that coming *after* the subject แฝแพฐฮปฮฟฯ / glass [also assuming that this is the proper form of glass, a singular feminine mass noun in the nominative case]). Dunno if the แผก bit is required or not, but kinda feels like it is if a cursory glance at example sentences is any indication?
Basically... how far off am I in faithfully translating "dat glass", in this context, into ancient Greek?

A lot of this time has been dedicated to "hurrying up and waiting," and so I have had some time to sit here and think.
And I came up with silly personalized nerd names for all my email box, task, calendar, etc. labels!! ๐ป
I will only share a few, out of respect for your time:
โธ๏ธ Ellimenory
๐ This is the name for the category label that holds all of my various email boxes in one place
๐ Etymology: Elli- (me!) + limen (Gk. ฮปฮนฮผฮฎฮฝ, "harbor," "port") + -ory (Lat. -orium, "place for")โธ๏ธ Ellisallagment
๐ Meaning: These are financial tasks, obligations, dates, or communications. Anything related with financial or money matters.
๐ Etymology: Elli- (me!) + allagฤ (Gk. แผฮปฮปฮฑฮณฮฎ, "exchange," "barter") + -ment (Lat. -mentum, "result," "act of")โธ๏ธ Ellisbibliphiloca
๐ Meaning: The category label for the list of books I own that were authored and/or published by personal friends.
๐ Etymology: Ellis- (me!) + biblรญon (Gk. ฮฒฮนฮฒฮปฮฏฮฟฮฝ, "book") + philรญa (Gk. ฯฮนฮปฮฏฮฑ, "friendship") + -ca (Gk. thฤkฤ, "receptacle")โธ๏ธ Ellisbiblisaureca
๐ Meaning: My "treasure" archive of books to read and of things to do and to explore. Someone found it interesting that I choose to treasure the unknown rather than attaching this word to books I'd already read and known that I liked. I just said, "Why would I hold onto a future responsibility I didn't treasure enough to make the burden worth it?"
๐ Etymology: Ellis- (me!) + biblรญon (Gk. ฮฒฮนฮฒฮปฮฏฮฟฮฝ, "book") + thฤsauros (Gk. ฮธฮทฯฮฑฯ ฯฯฯ, "treasure," "storehouse") + -ca (Gk. thฤkฤ, "receptacle")โธ๏ธ Ellistheronomy
๐ Meaning: All tasks and calendar events and communications directly related to my personal physical and mental health.
๐ Etymology: Elli- (me!) + therapeรญa (Gk. ฮธฮตฯฮฑฯฮตฮฏฮฑ, "healing," "care," "service") + -nomy (Gk. ฮฝฮฟฮผฮฏฮฑ, "system of laws," "management")โธ๏ธ Ellithekium
๐ Meaning: My savings account. ๐บ
๐ Etymology: Elli- (me!) + thek (Gk. , "case," "box," "chest," "receptacle") + -ium (Lat. -ium, "a place for")โธ๏ธ Ellymiktry
๐ Meaning: The box that holds "All the Other Thingsโข."
๐ Etymology: Elli- (me!) + mikta (Gk. ฮผฮนฮบฯฮฌ, "mixed things," from sรฝmmikta) + -ry (Eng. "place of," "practice of")That's not even a quarter of them all. Dear gods, please tell me it isn't just me? ๐ ๐โพ๏ธ

In ancient Greek religion & mythology, the Moirai (a.k.a. in English as the Fates) were the personification of destiny.
There were 3 sisters named: Clotho, who was the spinner; Lachesis, who was the allotter; & Atropos, who was the inevitable, a symbol for death. Their Roman equals are the Parcae.
The Moiraiโs role was to make sure that every being, mortal & divine, lived out their destinies. For mortals, this destiny went their entire lives & is pictured as a thread spun from a spindle. A spindle is the thing that Sleeping Beauty touched to become Sleeping Beauty.
Usually, they were considered to be above even the gods, in their role as enforcers of Fate. Zeus was even scared of them. Even though, in some stories, Zeus is able to command them. But these are rare.
The word Moirai (also spelt Moirae or Moerae) comes from Ancient Greek. This means โlots, destinies, apportioners.โ It also means a portion, or lot of the whole.
In Danteโs Divine Comedy, the Fates are mentioned in both Inferno & Purgatorio by their Greek names. In Shakespeareโs Macbeth, the Weird Sisters (or 3 Witches) are prophetesses, who are deeply rooted in both the real & supernatural worlds.
The Moirai are:
- Clotho, the spinner. She spun the thread of life from her distaff onto her spindle. Her Roman equal was Nona (โthe 9thโ), who was originally called upon in the 9th month of pregnancy.
- Lachesis, the allotter or drawer of lots. She measured the thread of life allotted to each person with her measuring rod. Her Roman equal was Decima (โthe 10thโ).
- Atropos, โinexorable,โ or inevitable,โ literally โunturning.โ She was the cutter of the thread of life. She chose the manner of each personโs death. When their time has come, she would cut their life-thread with her shears. Think about the end of Disneyโs Hercules, when our main man, Herc, went to save Meg from Hadesโ domain. Hercโs life-thread turned gold when he saved. Her Roman equal was Morta (โthe dead oneโ).
In the Republic of Plato, the 3 Moirai sing together with the music of the Seirenes. Lachesis sings the things that were, Clotho the things that are, & Atropos the things that are to be. Pindar, in his Hymn to the Fates, holds them in high honor. He calls them to send their sisters, the Hours (Eunomia, โlawfulnessโ; Dike, โrightโ; & Eirene, โpeaceโ), to stop the internal civil strife.
In the Theogony, Hesiod describes the Moirai as daughters of the primeval goddess Nyx (โnightโ), & the sisters of the Keres (โthe black fatesโ), Thanatos (โdeathโ), & Nemesis (โretributionโ). Later in the poem, Hesiod instead calls them daughters of Zeus & the Titaness Themis (โthe Institutorโ), who was the embodiment of divine order & law. This places them as sisters of the Hours.
In the cosmogony of Alcman (7th century BC), first came Thetis (โdisposer, creationโ) & then simultaneously Poros (โpathโ) & Tekmor (โend post, ordinanceโ). Poros is related to the end of all things.
Later, in the Orphic cosmogony, first came Thesis, whose ineffable nature is unexpected. Ananke (โnecessityโ) is the primeval goddess of inevitability who is entwined with the time-god Chronos, at the very beginning of time. They represented the cosmic forces of Fate & Time. They were sometimes called to control the fates of the gods. The 3 Moirai are daughters of Ananke.
In the Theogony of Hesiod, the 3 Moirai are personified as the daughters of Nyx & are acting the gods. Later they were daughters of Zeus & Themis, who was the embodiment of divine order & law. In Plutoโs Republic, the 3 Fates are daughters of Ananke (necessity).
The Moirai were supposed to appear 3 nights after a kidโs birth to determine the course of its life. At Sparta, the Temple to the Moirai stood near the communal hearth of the polis. Polis means โcityโ in Ancient Greek.
As the goddesses of birth who even prophesied the fate of the newly born, Elieithyia, the ancient Minoan goddess of childbirth & divine midwifery, was their companion.
The Erinyes, a group of chthonic goddesses of vengeance, served as tools of the Moirai. Chthonic means concerning, belonging to, or inhabiting the underworld. They inflicted punishment for evil deeds, particularly upon those who sought to avoid their rightful destiny. The Morai were confused with the Erinyes, as well as the death-goddesses, the Keres.
In earlier times, they were pictured as only a few, or perhaps only 1, individual goddess Homerโs Illiad speaks generally of the Moira, who spins the thread of life for men at their birth. Sheโs Moria Krataia, โpowerful Moira,โ or there are several Moirai.
In the Odyssey, thereโs a reference to the Klothes, or spinners. At Delphi, only the Fates of Birth & Death were revered. In Athens, Aphrodite was called Aphrodite Urania, the โeldest of the Fates.โ
In the older myths, theyโre daughters of primeval beings like Nyx (โnightโ) in Theogony, or Ananke in Orphic cosmogony.
The Moirai could be placated as goddesses. Brides in Athens offered them locks of hair, & women swore by them. They may have originated as a birth goddesses & only later their reputation as the agents of destiny. The Moirai were also credited to be the inventors of 7 Greek letters โ A, B, H, I, T, & Y.
The Fates had at least 3 known temples: Ancient Corinth, Sparta, & Thebes. The temple in Sparta was situated next to the grave/tomb of Orestes.

Spirituality & Religious Studies @spiritualityreligiousstudies.wordpress.com@spiritualityreligiousstudies.wordpress.com ยทTheodicy
Theodicy means โvindication of God.โ This is from the Ancient Greek โtheosโ meaning โgodโ & โdikeโ meaning โjustice.โ
This is an argument in the philosophy of religion that tries to resolve the Problem of Evil, which arises when all power (omnipotence) & all goodness (omnibenevolence) are attributed to God simultaneously.
Theodicy provides a framework in which God & evilโs existence are considered plausible. Itโs not trying to show that God & evil can logically coexist. A theodicy is โan answer to the question of who God permits evilโ (philosopher Alvin Plantinga).
In this view, theodicy is a theological set-up that tries to vindicate God in response to the Problem of Evil. This looks inconsistent with the existence of an omnipotent & omnibenevolent God.
Another definition of theodicy is the vindication of divine goodness & providence in the view of the existence of evil.
A theodicy shows that itโs reasonable to believe in God despite evidence of evil in the world. It offers a foundation that can account for why evil exists.
Theodicies are developed to answer the question of why a good God allows the manifestation of evil. Thereby resolving the Problem of Evil. Some theodicies also address the Problem of Evil โto make the existence of an all-knowing, all-powerful, & all-good God consistent with the existence of evil or suffering in the world.โ

#BostonWeekend 29/x EDIT jk, i went here, instead! I've got guests in town this weekend & this is extremely my jam, but not theirs, please go, its weird theatre, near home, and free:
Sun #THEATRE: #AncientGreece x #Hitchcock x #60sRock - โAttack of the Byrds! a verse play by Gary Duehr adapted from โThe Birdsโ by Aristophanes, will be presented as a reading on Sunday, August 10, from 3-4:30.
The reading is free and open to the public. The reading features original songs by Jane Burgess Harcourt, sung by Suzanne Boucher and accompanied by Peter Hoffman on guitar. This version mashes up the classic #Greek comedy with โThe #Birdsโ by Hitchcock and songs inspired by the โ60s band the #Byrds. In rhymed #tetrameter couplets, the brisk verse punches up its wordplay. This adaptation uses the masks and puppets of a traveling theater troupe to tell the fantasy infused with political satire.โ https://artsathearmory.org/events/attack-of-the-byrds/ #Aristophanes #AncientGreek #ClassicalStudies #Comedy #BostonTheatre #TheBirds #TheByrds
