Quasit's Book Recommendations: "A Shropshire Lad" by A. E. Housman (1896)

When I was one-and-twenty
I heard a wise man say,

Meet A.E. Housman, if you haven't met him before. His poetry may not be fashionable any more (he rhymed, which is apparently a cardinal sin among poets these days), but it was brilliant, addictive, and powerfully moving.

I memorized many of his poems for years, just for the fun of it. There are lessons in them that I treasure.

That's why, when I came across a TERRIBLY mangled Barnes & Noble ebook of "A Shropshire Lad", I couldn't resist writing a review in the style of Housman:

The verses get five stars from me;
The presentation, one.
A pity 'tis that OCR's
So ruined poor Housman's fun!

The headers cleave each verse in twain
The lines lie torn and wrent,
How cruel to make him die again!
Needlessly violent.

But hope lives on, for pristine text
of "Shropshire Lad" is free
On Project Gutenberg, the home
of Housman fans like me.

[Thread] So, my "homework" assignment has to do with #Amazons -- one of my favorite topics to focus on (since I was 11 years old). I was recently gifted a new book about Amazons, and also had one that I picked up for myself years ago, but hadn't gotten around to reading yet. The books are: "The Amazons: Lives and Legends of Warrior Women Across The Ancient World" by Adrienne Mayor (2014), and "Amazons: The History Behind the Legend" by David Braund. Both of them are Classics scholars, but they seem to have completely different takes on Amazons (from what I've read in the reviews). And yes, I am planning on diving into both books, but first, I'm going to work on my own translations of certain passages in #TheIlliad and #Herodotus' "Histories"!

Good & bad news for #JaneAustenJuly I started with Pride & Prejudice 😍, then went on with Pride & Premeditation, but I felt Lizzie was not "my Lizzie". The murdered person was not very interesting and there was not much info to pick my curiosity so I got to chapter seven, realised I didn't care and decided to DNF it 😢 I still think the book has potential, but maybe I had P&P too present in my mind or maybe it was not the right time for me?
Then I picked The Other Bennet Sister... Oh my! This one has been so good and satisfying! It really gets you into P&P setting and context to tell us the story of Mary. I'm on chapter 60 and have 250 pages to go, so it can still go either way, but I'm hoping for the best because it truly deserves it.
