What does it mean to do digital history?
New epistemic horizons, new epistemic responsibilities!
At least that’s what we say in the (27p long) introduction to our Ambix special issue on computational approaches - that I think could also be a helpful read for those new to the topic 🤔
What do you think? Let me know!https://doi.org/10.1080/00026980.2026.2709974

Simplemma v2 is out, a few highlights:
- 54 languages, pure Python, 19 MB install
- 0.91 to 0.97 accuracy for 34 languages, German at 0.97 and English at 0.96, and 0.85 to 0.90 for morphologically richer ones such as Hungarian.
- Relevant for Digital Humanities with Latin and Ancient Greek
- Utilities included: tokenizer, sentence splitter, language detectionOverall, a few points behind state of the art neural approaches but easier to use and much faster :python:

Since Monday, the #PleiadesGazetteer editorial college has published 12 new and 112 updated place resources, reflecting the work of 18 people and projects. The usual Monday blog post will summarize the full week's worth of such work, but meantime, here's a #SneakPeek at a new place resource provided by Jeffrey Becker: the Agora of Elis.

The Agora of ancient Elis included the Stoa of the Hellanodikai, who served as judges in the games at Olympia.

RE: https://hcommons.social/@DHNow/117043880275643095
I‘m still a bit sceptical about the DH approach to technology, which seems to retain an old and dangerous ontological paradigm of technology that the history of technology and STS have thoroughly criticised. That technology acts upon people and society without being acted upon was always an analytically unsatisfying approach to me, but I think models of articulation between tech and society, i.e. complex interactions, being what shapes tech and its role is to me a fundamentally necessary approach to LLMs. Without it no real critical approach to them is possible, let alone resistance.
What I mean to say is: there is no technological „sublime“, never was. It was always an effect of propaganda.

@CTLiotta
Agreed. I am also uncomfortable about the authority of an #AI toolkit used to detect the use of #LLM #GenAISlop in a written work. To me such procedure lacks authority. I am left wondering if Digital Humanities ( #DH ) can step in to give any such test some academic credibility, We have seen some progress in #DHTools that successfully establish authorship for disputed creative works (text and musical scores). I also did a literature survey in preparation for a thesis I was working towards some years back which showed that #DHTextAnalysis techniques might be rigourous enough to detect more characteristics. Comparison of such characteristics between author and #GenAI produced literary work would be a more emphatic way to demonstrate #AIContent in written works.

For the last two months, I've been working on tei2jsonl. I will blog the full rationale (basically, quickly load embedding dbs while also making it easy to use ordinary UNIX tools with TEI corpora). But this morning, I would like to celebrate the fact that it just processed over 22 million word tokens across 410 eebo text in about 11 seconds.
And I have not even begun to optimize this code.
