CW: Warning: Controversial Album Cover!
UNSANE
Unsane
2022 U.S. reissueOne of the most primitive and abrasive #NoiseRock albums ever, and a totally underrated #90s classic.
It’s punk, it’s industrial, it’s hardcore, it’s noise, it’s whatever you wanna file it under.
Regardless of label, it’s badass under any of those definitions. This is also the only Unsane album featuring original drummer Charlie Ondras, who died of a heroin overdose in NYC two months after this came out.
Equally as notable is the cover, which is a honest-to-god legitimate photo of a decapitated corpse lying across New York subway tracks, courtesy of a friend of the band’s who was closely involved in investigating that scene.
If you don’t like gritty, abrasive music, then this is definitely not for you.
If you do, this is an essential and unique landmark.
Strictly for the adventurous.

DINOSAUR JR.
There Near
2026 U.S. pressing
Translucent Pink vinylAnd day you get a new Dino record is a GREAT day, and as always, one of the greatest bands of all time have not disappointed.
I just don’t understand how they keep doing it.
Since reuniting 20 years ago, they have continued to put out STELLAR records that are 100% on par with the pre ious records, regardless of which lineup you’re talking about. This record sounds savage.
But then again, what else would you expect?J MASCIS belongs on the Mount Rushmore of guitar players.
I don’t think you can even argue that at this point.PROTECT DINOSAUR JR. AT ALL COSTS.

47 years ago today, August 25, 1979, Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers Band, debuted at #55 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart with “All the Gold in California”. It went on to peak at #1 for two weeks and spent a total of 15 weeks on the chart.
My mom bought their album. I remember seeing it leaning against the front of her record player brings back good memories.

DOLLY PARTON
The Hits Of Dolly Parton
1976 Canada pressingStill reeling from today’s news.
😢 💔I’ll be listening to a LOT of Dolly over the next few days, I imagine. I’m starting with this, which I blind pulled from my vast Dolly section.
My mother was the 2nd youngest of 15 (!) kids.
EVERY single one of my Aunts and Uncles LOVED real country music (not the shit they’ve passed off as country over the last 40 years), and growing up, Dolly was just always on.
Didn’t matter whose house I went to.
I fell in love with her early. Then, I saw 9 to 5, & learned she was also VERY funny, and a very good actress.
Further down the road, whilst living in NYC in 2000, I got to spend a magical half hour with her.
She was one of the kindest, loving and wonderfuly warm people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting.
The world is a little worse off today.

Various Artists, Miami Vice (Music From The Television Series), 1985 on MCA
Though I can't say I actually remember any episodes of the series—I'm sure I watched it—I certainly remember the theme song, which was inescapable. There were multiple soundtrack releases (foreshadowing later franchises like The OC?) from Miami Vice but this was the first and most impactful. The main theme is maybe most memorable, but also Glenn Frey, Phil Collins, Chaka Khan, Melle Mel, and Tina Turner make appearances. My copy—via private sale—is an MCA Gloversville pressing […] -
LLOYD COLE AND THE COMMOTIONS
Rattlesnakes
1984 Canada pressingBack in the abode for last spin of the night.
A pretty great #alternative #newwave #poprock from our favorite distant galaxy, the #80s .
A masterclass in songwriting, particularly the song “Perfect Skin”, which Cole gives complete credit to Bob Dylan.
Cole overdosed on Bob during recording, and in a lot of spots, it’s apparent.
But Cole is not some Dylan clone. He has a very distinct individual approach, particularly with the lyrics, which are very literate; with nods to Norman Mailer and Renata Adler (see “Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken?” and “Speedboat”, respectively).
Which makes sense seeing Cole studied English and Philosophy at the University Of Glasgow.
The songs are FULL of those kind of literary & cultural references & intellectual humor.
A wonderful debut 35 minutes from a great songwriter.#vinyl #vinylrecords #vinylcommunity #records #vintage #retro #physicalmedia #analog #vinylcollection #art #music

MOTHER LOVE BONE
Apple
2025 Europe reissue
Orange Opaque [Habanero] vinylWas thinking about Andy Wood today, which drove me to throwing this on.
When I was 13/14 in 1991, and the Pearl Jam, Temple Of The Dog, and #seattle #grunge thing was happening, I was unaware of MLB.
My crash course (much like most kids my age) was through the soundtrack to the movie Singles, and the epic song “Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns”.
This whole album is incredible.
“Stardog Champion” fucking rules, and “Man Of Golden Words” made its way onto many mix CDs I made for friends. The “Crown Of Thorns” here is missing the “Chloe Dancer” front end.
For the version on Singles, check out the Shine E.P..It’s a sad thing, what happened with Andy Wood.
What a talent.
But this record is HIS legacy.
Forever legendary. And without IT, we get no Pearl Jam, and no Temple.

PRINCE AND THE REVOLUTION
Parade
1986 Canada pressingWas in the mood for some Prince on this beautiful Sunday afternoon.
A blind Prince pull produced Parade.A perfect example of a VERY good soundtrack to a REALLY awful movie.
This (with the exception of maybe Singles) has to be the gold standard.Acting as the soundtrack to the repugnant film Under The Cherry Moon, this has a bevy of killer tunes on it, particularly the final three tracks.
Even if you dislike everything that comes before (why would you?), the run of “Kiss”, “Anotherloverholenyohead”, and “Sometimes It Snows In April” alone make Parade worth owning.
The movie though?
Find a DVD copy, take a huge dump on it, then catapult it into the hot August sun.
If you can prove to me you’ve watched it all, I’ll give you $400.

RICHARD AND LINDA THOMPSON
Shoot Out The Lights
1982 Canada pressingAnother one I haven’t listened to start to finish in a long time.
I first learned of Richard Thompson through my absolute hero Bob Mould, who did a savage live cover version of “Shoot Out The Lights” (from the Cabaret Metro in Chicago) on his POISON YEARS compilation that I drilled into the ground as a kid.
For years, I thought it was a Bob song, and when I found out it was a cover, instantly sought out THIS album, and started to explore Richard’s music.
THIS is still the gold standard of his catalog for me, with MIRROR BLUE running a close second.

THE MEN THEY COULDNT HANG
Night Of A Thousand Candles
1985 UK pressingA Sunday morning spin of some #folk -y psychobilly #punk country from London in the #80s .
I bought this blind from a cheap bin while I was visiting a friend in Atlanta, Georgia around 2018.
We were killing some time before going to a Braves game, and I found this fun little record store in The Battery. This was their first record, and it’s got more than a little bit of a Pogues-y vibe to it (albeit less loose and sloppy-sounding), which is probably why I like it so much.
Celtic/English folk with punk energy, it’s a very English sounding working-class kind of record.Great songs, great passion.
A record I’m always happy to revisit, but haven’t in a while.Although I do like some of their records that came after, nothing tops this one for me. It’s just REALLY good.

45 years ago today, August 22, 1981, Charly McClain debuted at #66 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart with “Sleepin' with the Radio On”. It went on to peak at #4 and spent a total of 16 weeks on the chart.
I enjoyed listening to this song on the radio which was my inspiration to visit my favorite record store to buy and gladly added it to my treasured music collection 45 years ago.

WOO
It's Cosy Inside
1989 U.S. pressingOk.
So I lied before.
THIS is last spin of the night.A VERY mellow and VERY strange #ambient record, made by two English brothers named Mark and Clive Ives.
There’s all kinds of instrumentation on here. Synths, drum machines, acoustic guitars, clarinet, violin… it’s a kind of watery sounding #newage .
It’s a very intimate “for being at home” kind of cozy listen.
Nobody gave a shit about this back in ‘89. However, since it’s 2012, it’s become a sought after cult favorite.
For fans of warm, lo-fi ambient music.
EDIT: Holy shit! I just looked this up, and I didn’t realize how pricey they are (about $150 CAD)!

SNAKEFINGER
Greener Postures
1980 U.S. pressingA pretty strange one for last spin of the night, but what would you expect from something with such close ties to The Residents (who co-wrote and co-produced some of it)?
As strange and as “angular” as #artrock gets; greasy, slippery guitars, bum notes (purely intentional), and just an overall melting, warped kinda vibe.
However, as weird and warbly as this album sounds, it DOES have some nice melodies. It’s incredibly melancholic in spots, and outright catchy in others (see: “The Man In The Dark Sedan), which balances out the demented and sinister sounding parts nicely.
Think of WEEN before there was a Ween.
I’d bet dollar to pesos that Dean and Gene are very familiar with (and very fond of) this band.Just my kind of demented, everybody. 😂

THE VERLAINES
Bird-Dog
2023 Worldwide RSD reissue
Ltd. Edition purple vinylGreat score from the used bin this morning!
A masterpiece of #80s #indie and #alternative music.Of all the indie from THAT period; (from about ‘84/85 to ‘89), The Verlaines kinda stick out to me. A little more sophisticated & poetic, unique song structures, with very wordy and angular sounding tunes.
They always came off a little more artful than your average 80s indie band to me.
My favorite band to EVER come from the great Flying Nun catalog.I came to them really late, first hearing them on the No Alternative compilation from the #90s & their track “Heavy 33”.
I was so taken with that song, and it’s what set me off backwards, leading me to the first two Flying Nun records, and the following two on Slash.
Graeme Downes is a great artist.
Worth exploring if you like unique songcraft.#vinyl #vinylrecords #vinylcommunity #records #vintage #retro #physicalmedia #analog #vinylcollection #art #music

MOS DEF
The Ecstatic
2026 Worldwide 2xLP reissue
Ltd. Ed. Ruby Red #vinylLast spin of the night.
A little later than I like to throw a record on, but I’ve been wanting to listen to this shit all day.Mos Def is one of my all-time favorite rappers, and I absolutely love The Ecstatic. This was my absolute jam in 2009, & for a guy like me who lets #artrock #alternative #indie #newwave and other weirdo forms of #rock dominate his time, that’s a neat trick.
“Life In Marvelous Times” is ALL TIME for me, & for the past handful of years, I’ve been torturing my teenage son by randomly and repeatedly rapping in his face:
“Mr. Schulman/what a prick/attitude matched his wardrobe/uglier than sin”. 😂
Completely without context.Amazing album that has Talib Kweli, Slick Rick & Georgia Ann Muldrow on it.
So happy to finally have this on vinyl.

MADONNA
Like A Prayer
1989 Canada reissue
[Columbia House club edition]Last spin of the night before I head to bed to dream of the morning, when all of my newly acquired Otter Pops will be frozen.
A masterpiece of the pop genre, regardless of decade.
It’s my Madonna cutoff point, as I have no interest in any of the music she made after this.
It’s introspective and personal in a million different ways, & musically it still fucking SLAPS (did I use it right, kids?).
Like A Prayer, Express Yourself, Cherish, Keep It Together… all classics.
This is the last masterful stroke of mainstream #80s pop; before stuff got REALLY shitty, & until Nirvana came & blew everything right the fuck up.
In the best (& most needed) way possible.THIS is how I choose to remember Madonna.
Not the ancient, surgery-ridden crypt keeper who’s almost 70, making me depressed & physically ill.

THE LONDON SUEDE
The London Suede
2020 UK, Europe & U.S. reissueI will NEVER refer to this band as “The London Suede”.
Their name is SUEDE, & it always fucking will be.
I don’t give a shit what that shitty jazz vocalist thinks.
She is not Suede, & she can go to hell. This was about as #glam as the #90s got.
I fell in love with this album intensely for about 2-3 years, & then, I just kind of outgrew it.
I had discovered a bevy of weirder, fringier music & stuff like Suede just kind of fell by the wayside.I’ve been rediscovering this great album over the past few days.
I wish the name on the cover looked more like the CD version I had as a kid (the ‘93 U.S. issue on Nude/Columbia).I forgot how awesome both “Metal Mickey” & “Animal Nitrate” are. 😂
This didnt quite break through in my country like it did in the UK, though, but a really great record.#vinyl #vinylrecords #vinylcommunity #records #vintage #retro #physicalmedia #analog #vinylcollection #art #music #1990s #90smusic
