  1. FRED NEIL
    Everybody's Talkin'
    1971 U.S. reissue
    [orange labels]

A masterful songwriter, and a dude that had a LOT to do with a young Bob Dylan hitting the stage at Cafe Wha? in Greenwich Village.

It still shocks me how many people think that “Everybody’s Talkin’” is a Harry Nilsson song, when in fact it was Neil who wrote it.
That song only became a hit when Nilsson’s version was featured in the 1969 movie Midnight Cowboy.

SUCH a hit that Neil’s self-titled ‘66 album (THIS ONE), was reissued under the name Everybody’s Talkin’, in order to capitalize on the film’s (and song’s) success.

The album however is much more than that one song.
The Dolphins is absolutely beautiful, as is Neil’s take on the traditional tune “Sweet Cocaine”.

A laid back and stellar 38 minutes.
    Just such a great record.

  6. THE EDSEL AUCTIONEER
    Voice Of The Harolds
    1990 UK pressing

    Sweet-ass noisy Saturday jams.

Kinda grunge-y, super loud indie rock from Leeds, and this is a mini-album that collects their first single, and E.P. material.

Some Dino Jr., Husker Du, My Bloody Valentine and Pale Saints vibes, with great guitars. Super ragged and punchy sounding.

John Peel heard their early demos and was so blown away by them that he brought them in Maida for a Peel session, which they recorded four songs for in 1988.

I desperately need a copy of their 1992 album Simmer.
So if anybody out there sees or comes across one… let’s make a deal.
Yer friendly neighborhood Vinyl Ape will take care of you.

But this is 100% worth checking out if you like any of the bands I compared them to, other genres where they sit.

  13. THE SMITHEREENS
    Green Thoughts
    1988 Canada pressing

    Friday night fire 🔥 🔥🔥🔥!!!

Another band I learned about in the early #90s as a kid, by pilfering my older sister’s then-boyfriend’s cassette collection.

I was instantly taken by the guitars, the melodies, and the band’s catchy songcraft.

Don Dixon’s production is spot on here, too.
    This album just SOUNDS great.

No offense intended towards anybody, but one of maybe only a handful of good things to ever come from New Jersey.
    Sorry/not sorry.
    You know?

  18. THE CURE
    The Peel Sessions 1978
    2026 Europe pressing

Super siked to snag this today.
When I was a kid, I bought a cassette version of this released by Strange Fruit. I drilled that tape into the ground, particularly that version of “Fire In Cairo”.
[cassette I had pictured below as well]

I know there’s probably been about 50 different physical releases of these four Peel Sessions songs from ‘78, but I’ve never had a chance to replace my cassette copy until today.

    These performances are great.
A young, scruffy, three-piece iteration of what would over time become one of the most important bands in the history of music.

And again, I can’t stress this enough, this is my favorite version of “Fire In Cairo” that’s ever been committed to tape.

    Great sounding pressing too.
    Beyond pleased.

This was Beck's sixth album, out in the late 90s on Bong Load Records / DGC (Geffen). Beck shares producer credit with Nigel Godrich (who also worked with Radiohead and U2). 32. SOOJ
    Crusher
    2026 U.S. Ltd. Edition pressing
    Moonbag Grey vinyl

I’m always willing to try something I’ve never heard of if it has a NUMERO GROUP label on it.
More often than not, it tends to be a very satisfying experience.

    That is the case here.

A collaborative project between members of Duster and Dirty Art Club, Crusher is a record that’s very melancholic, restrained and sleepy. A super dream-like, hazy kind of #Slowcore with warped and warbly edges.

A wonderful late-night #ambient dream-pop album, or if you just wanna chill SEVERELY. It’s so damn comforting.

A pleasant surprise that I’m really enjoying, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it makes my favorite albums of the year list.
If you like this kind of music AT ALL, you’ll REALLY like it.
    It’s really great.

  33. THE STROKES
    Reality Awaits
    2026 Worldwide pressing
    Black Ice Glitter

I wasn’t going to bother with this, but it’s so Reprehensibly bad, I will.

I hate this record so much.

The Strokes have special meaning to me, having experienced them in real time when I lived in New York, before Is This It? even came out, seeing them live several times around town.

I’ve appreciated how they’ve grown over the years, adding more surreal aspects to what they do, #newwave -y #80s vibes, etc…

However, after 1.5 listens, I can say this is THE WORST Strokes album of their entire catalog.
    GARBAGE.
A band like The Strokes don’t need obnoxious Autotune effects.
The songs are dour, lifeless, & without any kind of personality whatsoever.
It sounds like a piss poor Strokes cover band that decided to inject a few originals into their Strokes set, & drown them in Autotune.

    AWFUL.

My love for this album goes back to when I was a punk kid, getting stoned and skating down at 8-Ball Skate park.

Both this and Songs The Lord Taught Us were always in heavy rotation, along with the rest of our cherished musical fare.

“Goo Goo Muck” and “Primitive” are perfect tunes.
    They all are, really.

Slashing guitars, menacing and sleazy, warped and psychedelic.

    Yes, and please.
    🙏

  35. THE MURDER CAPITAL
    When I Have Fears
    2019 UK & Ireland pressing

Man, do I love this record.
    I can’t believe it’s already 7 years old.

    44 SUPER-intense, hard-hitting minutes.
Calling this and lumping it in with other modern #postpunk music seems a bit disrespectful.
Because along with the abrasive guitars, thick bass and pounding drums comes a little more atmosphere, tension and claustrophobia.
No doubt a result of the involvement of the albums producer: the legendary Flood.

A spacious, heavy, and emotional record that still sounds as impactful and exciting seven years on.
    Just a truly excellent album.

    Start with “Green And Blue”.
If you like that, soldier further.

  36. Sylvia is by far my favorite vocalist and entertainer of all-time. She's a wonderful person too, that I'm grateful to have gotten a chance to know.

For the special occasion of it being the 40-year anniversary of her single hitting Billboard's Country chart, I created a video.

I hope you might like to check it out. Thank you. 🎶😀🎹🎵

  37. 40 years ago today, July 5, 1986, Sylvia debuted at #73 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart with “Nothin’ Ventured, Nothin’ Gained”. It went on to peak at #33 and spent a total of 15 weeks on the chart.

I remember hearing this song on “American Country Countdown” with Bob Kingsley. I rarely missed an episode, especially when I knew a Sylvia song would be included.

  38. Bill Evans and Jim Hall, Intermodulation, 1966 on Verve

This was a follow-up to 1962's Undercurrent, which also featured Hall and Evans. Produced by Creed Taylor and recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in two sessions in April and May 1966. It's just Evans on piano and Hall on guitar, starting with two standards ("I've Got You Under My Skin" and "My Man's Gone Now") and then a number of more contemporary tunes, including originals by Evans and Hall as well as Joe Zawinul. My copy—via Mystery Train in Gloucester MA—is a 60s pressing with Van Gelder […]

  39. NEIL YOUNG
    Dead Man
    1996 Canada CD issue

One of my all-time favorite Neil You g recordings ever.

As a film, Dead Man is a strange, heady, acid-ridden #psychedelic Western, and they couldn’t have asked a more perfect dude to score it.

Neil’s music is exactly what the film looks and feels like.
He improvised the entire score from a recording studio while watching footage from the film, consisting of seven instrumentals, with dialog excerpts from the film threaded between them, as well as Johnny Depp reading the poetry.

“You were a poet and a painter. Now you are a killer of white men.”

    Incredible find.

I hope the next NYA vinyl box set has this in it.
I’d buy it just for that.

  40. A TRIBE CALLED QUEST
People's Instinctive Travels And The Paths Of Rhythm
    2015 Europe 2xLP Remastered
    25th Anniversary reissue

    Can I kick it?

    But of course.

One of the great #HipHop albums of the #90s , and one of the great debut albums EVER, regardless of genre.

The three bonus remixes that are included aren’t at all necessary, but it sounds great regardless.

  41. SAVAGES
    Silence Yourself
    2013 UK & U.S. pressing

A little gasoline to fuel the fire of a Saturday night.

This was amongst my three or so favorite records of 2013, and it still sounds fucking amazing 13 years later.

One of the great debut albums ever; abrasive, noisy, #postpunk perfection from some of the most badass street-fighting bitches of all time.

It’s like an aural manifesto straight from the books of Wire, Gang Of Four, Siouxsie…

Conceptually, it’s even more relevant now as it was over a decade ago.
Live and experience through art, music and human emotion, and put your fucking phones down.
    Live life.
Don’t filter it through your machines.

And.. “DONT LET THE FUCKERS GET YOU DOWN!!!!”

  42. Art Pepper, Gettin’ Together, 1960 on Contemporary Records

Pepper joined here by Paul Chambers (bass), Jimmy Cobb (drums), Wynton Kelly (piano) and Conte Candoli (trumpet, on three tracks). That makes this another LP with Miles Davis' rhythm section, as the earlier Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section was. Rounding out for now my recent Art Pepper pickups (say Art Pepper Pickups five times fast), my copy—direct from Craft Recordings—is the 2024 Acoustic Sounds Series reissue mastered by Bernie Grundman and pressed at QRP.

  43. Art Pepper, Intensity, 1963 on Contemporary Records

Recorded in 1960 but released in 1963, this has Pepper joined by Dolo Coker (piano), Jimmy Bond (bass), and Frank Butler (drums). A critical part of any west coast jazz library. That cover photo makes me think of the moment in Lost in Translation where the translator turns a series of long directions in Japanese from the director to Bill Murray as an actor into just this: "more intensity." Part of a series of recent pickups from Pepper on reissues, my copy—direct from Craft […]

  44. Sonny Rollins, Way Out West, 1957 on Contemporary

This was the first Rollins album with Ray Brown and Shelly Manne, and the first time he recorded with only bass and drums. I love this cover photo emphasizing the New York native was out west. My copy—direct from Craft Recordings—is the 2009 Original Jazz Classics reissue which was remastered back in 1988 and repressed in 2009. It reproduces the yellow Contemporary labels but with a catalog number OJC-337.

  45. Cliff Jordan, Cliff Jordan, 1957 on Blue Note

Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in Hackensack NJ, Jordan is joined by John Jenkins (alto sax), Art Taylor (drums), Ray Bryant (piano), Curtis Fuller (trombone) and Lee Morgan (trumpet). This is one of two Blue Note LPs he put out in 1957 (the other was Blowing in From Chicago with John Gilmore). My copy—via Amazon—is the 2024 Blue Note Tone Poet Series reissue, with lacquer by Kevin Gray and pressing at RTI. Although they used the "mono" labels here and the spine also says mono, the LP is […]

  47. 45 years ago today, April 25, 1981, Sylvia debuted at #74 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart with “The Matador”. It went on to peak at #7 for two weeks and spent a total of 16 weeks on the chart.

Sylvia made a music video of this song; it was the first concept video to air on CMT when the network made its debut in 1983. It's also among the earlier Country music videos made back then.

Just returned from a road trip to the lower 48 with my grandma and this song had just been released. I’d save my pennies to be able to always buy Sylvia’s singles and her albums.

  50. Booker Ervin, The Freedom Book, 1964 on Prestige

Sixth full-length with Ervin as leader, recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in 1963, for Prestige. Ervin is joined here by Jaki Byard (piano), Richard Davis (bass), and Alan Dawson (who was a drum instructor at Berklee in Boston) (drums).

My copy—via a private sale—is the 2023 Analogue Productions / Craft Recordings reissue, in the Prestige Stereo Series. It was mastered by Kevin Gray and pressed at QRP on 180g vinyl.
