  1. THE TIME
    Ice Cream Castle
    1984 Canada pressing

Today is your old pal Ape’s birthday (hold for applause……), and before I head out for a days worth of festivities, I’m starting my day out with one of my favorite albums of all time.

If I could have grown up with ANY father (I didn’t have one), or at least be adopted by ANY DUDE of my choice, my choice would have been MORRIS FUCKING DAY.

Under his tutelage, I would have learned how to be the coolest motherfucker on Earth: how to look into a mirror all day and whisper I love you, how to do “The Bird”, and how to train dudes named Jerome to fetch me my hat whenever I want it.

“Hold up, do y'all wanna learn a new dance?
Are you qualified to learn one? That's what I thought! Who can dance out there? Okay, we gonna try a new dance. And if I don't see everybody doin' it, I don't wanna see you no more!”

  6. THAT PETROL EMOTION
    Manic Pop Thrill
    1986 UK pressing [first]

Decided to spend a beautiful weather day by taking a day-trip down island, and the majesty of where I live was on full display today.

Found a handful of things I’ve been hunting for quite some time, but THIS was my favorite find of the day.

Manic Pop Thrill is the only album of theirs I’m SUPER passionate about and care to own, and I finally got one today.

Jagged, nervous, guitar driven #80s power pop of the highest order.
    It’s abrasive, but very catchy.
A level of awesomeness that was never matched by any of those subsequent albums.

One of the most overlooked classic albums of any genre.

If you don’t know it, or you like The Undertones, spend some time with it.
You’ll like it as much if not MORE than anything that band did.

  20. Leonard Cohen, Live Songs, 1973 on CBS

This was Leonard Cohen's first released live album, on Columbia in the US but CBS in Europe. It was recorded in 1970 and 1972 (you can see the musicians and cities listed on the cover). The vocalist "Jennifer Warren" in the 1972 band would later be known as Jennifer Warnes who released a full album of Cohen covers called Famous Blue Raincoat. The "Tonight Will be Fine" is from the Isle of Wight 1970, from which a DVD was later released. Fascinating era for Cohen who was a famously reluctant […]

  22. John Prine; For Better, Or Worse; 2016 on Oh Boy

This was Prine's 17th studio album and one of my favorites from his late career: a series of duets with great female singers, including Iris DeMent, Alison Krauss, Amanda Shires, Morgane Stapleton, Lee Ann Womack, Susan Tedeschi, Holly Williams, Kathy Mattea, Miranda Lambert, and Kacey Musgraves - plus Fiona Prine! It's basically a follow up to 1999's In Spite of Ourselves which was also a set of duets with famous female singers. Prine is such a gifted writer, and though none of these […]

  24. SYD BARRETT
    The Peel Sessions
    2025 Europe Unofficial reissue

My birthday is on Wednesday, and a friend of mine just swung by the house to give me this as an early birthday present.

He told me “It’s always 50/50 if I’m ever getting you a record for a present. I never know if you have it or not. I know you like this boot series though, so I took a gamble.”

I DID NOT have it, and yes, I do REALLY like these Radio Broadcast releases. For “unofficial” recordings, all of them that I’VE bought (and I have a bunch of em) have been really good sound-quality wise.

    And this one’s no different.

Five really great Syd solo tunes, my favorite of which has always been Baby Lemonade, which, has guitar by David Gilmour, as the studio album version does.

    I wonderful early birthday present.
    Thank you kindly, Richie.
Most people are wrong about you.

  26. SOOJ
    Crusher
    2026 U.S. Ltd. Edition pressing
    Moonbag Grey vinyl

I’m always willing to try something I’ve never heard of if it has a NUMERO GROUP label on it.
More often than not, it tends to be a very satisfying experience.

    That is the case here.

A collaborative project between members of Duster and Dirty Art Club, Crusher is a record that’s very melancholic, restrained and sleepy. A super dream-like, hazy kind of #Slowcore with warped and warbly edges.

A wonderful late-night #ambient dream-pop album, or if you just wanna chill SEVERELY. It’s so damn comforting.

A pleasant surprise that I’m really enjoying, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it makes my favorite albums of the year list.
If you like this kind of music AT ALL, you’ll REALLY like it.
    It’s really great.

  27. FRANK SINATRA
    In The Wee Small Hours
    2025 Worldwide MONO reissue
    Blue Note Tone Poet Series

Friday night with Old Blue Eyes.

These Tone Poet series albums from Blue Note sound otherworldly. I have a few of the Chet Baker ones, and they’re great too.

When I saw this today, and saw that it was a Mono cut by Kevin Gray, I needed no further convincing.

I wish everybody put as much care and detail into the sound of their reissues like these.
    Just magnificent sounding.

Not sure they’d bother giving this same treatment to September Of My Years, but it would certainly make me beyond ecstatic.

  29. Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Reactor, 1981 on Reprise

This was the last album for Young & Crazy Horse on Reprise before the five album run on Geffin. Some would consider this a kind of punk or even post-punk (is 1981 too early for post-punk?) version of Neil Young & Crazy Horse. It sometimes gets listed as one of their least successful records—the lyrics to T-Bone, for example—but I think it's got a certain rough charm. "Surfer Joe and Moe the Sleaze" is widely reputed to be about the Reprise records team, specifically Mo Ostin and Joe […]

Though I can't say I actually remember any episodes of the series—I'm sure I watched it—I certainly remember the theme song, which was inescapable. There were multiple soundtrack releases (foreshadowing later franchises like The OC?) from Miami Vice but this was the first and most impactful. The main theme is maybe most memorable, but also Glenn Frey, Phil Collins, Chaka Khan, Melle Mel, and Tina Turner make appearances. My copy—via private sale—is an MCA Gloversville pressing […]

  39. Various Artists, The Harder They Come, 1972 on Mango

This was the soundtrack to a film of the same name, released in the UK in 1972 and in the US in 1973. Although Jimmy Cliff's name is above the title, and he has six of the twelve tracks (though 2 have double versions on the LP_, there's also two Maytals tracks and one Desmond Dekker and others. I was too young to know, but this is said to have been a major part of breaking reggae outside of Jamaica as popular music - I know it established who Jimmy Cliff was for me. My copy—via private […]

Although this was Bonnie Raitt's big commercial breakthrough—and maybe where I first heard her?—it was actually her tenth studio album. (Later I'd find her back catalogue which has much to recommend in it). It was also her first on Capitol, having been dropped by Warner Bros. It was produced by Don Was (future Blue Note president), with whom she'd collaborated on Stay Awake. Includes John Hiatt's "Thing Called Love" as well as the title track Raitt wrote. Vienna
    1980 Canada pressing

A stone cold classic before I head out and start my Monday.

One of my favorite #80s records that I will never tire of.

I know diehards prefer the earlier #70s Ultravox records, but Vienna is the one for me.

The first one with Midge Ure on it, replacing the departed (he left, he didn’t die) John Foxx.

Full of really great tunes, and one of the defining albums of the early eighties #synthpop genre.

One of my all-time favorite fun and ridiculous facts:
The title track, unquestionably the band’s biggest song, reached #2 on the UK singles chart.

The song that kept it from being #1?

    Joe Dolce’s “Shaddap You Face”.
    😂

Apparently, good taste was on vacation in 1980.
