He told me “It’s always 50/50 if I’m ever getting you a record for a present. I never know if you have it or not. I know you like this boot series though, so I took a gamble.”

I DID NOT have it, and yes, I do REALLY like these Radio Broadcast releases. For “unofficial” recordings, all of them that I’VE bought (and I have a bunch of em) have been really good sound-quality wise.

And this one’s no different.

Five really great Syd solo tunes, my favorite of which has always been Baby Lemonade, which, has guitar by David Gilmour, as the studio album version does.

I wonderful early birthday present.

A masterful songwriter, and a dude that had a LOT to do with a young Bob Dylan hitting the stage at Cafe Wha? in Greenwich Village.

It still shocks me how many people think that “Everybody’s Talkin’” is a Harry Nilsson song, when in fact it was Neil who wrote it.
That song only became a hit when Nilsson’s version was featured in the 1969 movie Midnight Cowboy.

SUCH a hit that Neil’s self-titled ‘66 album (THIS ONE), was reissued under the name Everybody’s Talkin’, in order to capitalize on the film’s (and song’s) success.

The album however is much more than that one song.
The Dolphins is absolutely beautiful, as is Neil’s take on the traditional tune “Sweet Cocaine”.

A laid back and stellar 38 minutes.
Just such a great record.

Another band I learned about in the early #90s as a kid, by pilfering my older sister’s then-boyfriend’s cassette collection.

I was instantly taken by the guitars, the melodies, and the band’s catchy songcraft.

Don Dixon’s production is spot on here, too.
This album just SOUNDS great.

No offense intended towards anybody, but one of maybe only a handful of good things to ever come from New Jersey.

When I was a kid, I bought a cassette version of this released by Strange Fruit. I drilled that tape into the ground, particularly that version of “Fire In Cairo”.

I know there’s probably been about 50 different physical releases of these four Peel Sessions songs from ‘78, but I’ve never had a chance to replace my cassette copy until today.

These performances are great.
A young, scruffy, three-piece iteration of what would over time become one of the most important bands in the history of music.

And again, I can’t stress this enough, this is my favorite version of “Fire In Cairo” that’s ever been committed to tape.

Great sounding pressing too.

Three different Peel Sessions from The Jam here; a pair from 1977, and one from ‘79.

Some savage performances here, particularly “The Modern World”, “Saturday’s Kids” and “Eaton Rifles”.

I have a great deal of affection for this record, and I’m always baffled by how so little people know it.

A high-energy, #punk -y #powerpop record from the #80s , Let’s Go is a hell of a racket.

These songs are super fun, which is unusual, because The Reducers came from Connecticut, which might be the LEAST fun place on Earth.

As a New Englander myself, I can assure you that is a fact.

They should have broken through.
They were THAT good.
So good in fact, that they opened for The Ramones, David Johansen, and received a significant amount of airplay on college radio.

This is their signature album, and the only one I’ll ever need to own. It’s just one of those excellent gems that just seems like a secret between a small group of people.

So great.

The Eraser

For the most part, I’m 50/50 on all non-Jonny Greenwood projects outside of Radiohead.

That includes Thom’s records.
Some I really like, some not at all.

My favorite of his remains The Eraser, his first outside of the cozy confines of Radiohead.

Lots of really cool tunes on this, including “Harrowdown Hill”, which if I remember correctly, was the album’s single.

The Eraser is a record I can throw on and just let play through without issue.
Definitely Thom’s most satisfying solo effort.

There aren’t many albums that I would rather own and listen to on CD than on vinyl, but this is absolutely one of them.

A sprawling indie rock masterpiece that I revisit a few times a year, and it still feels as magical as when I first bought it in 1999.

Six 10” records is an incredibly inconvenient way to listen to this masterpiece. I did it once, and to be honest, the records didn’t sound good enough to warrant that kind of inconvenience.
Much in the same way as Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness by Smashing Pumpkins, another album I’m more than happy to stick to CDs with.

This is one of the defining albums of the late 1990s; an awesome range of styles, and beautiful songcraft.
