When I was a kid, I bought a cassette version of this released by Strange Fruit. I drilled that tape into the ground, particularly that version of “Fire In Cairo”.
[cassette I had pictured below as well]I know there’s probably been about 50 different physical releases of these four Peel Sessions songs from ‘78, but I’ve never had a chance to replace my cassette copy until today.
These performances are great.
A young, scruffy, three-piece iteration of what would over time become one of the most important bands in the history of music.And again, I can’t stress this enough, this is my favorite version of “Fire In Cairo” that’s ever been committed to tape.

This was Beck's sixth album, out in the late 90s on Bong Load Records / DGC (Geffen). Beck shares producer credit with Nigel Godrich (who also worked with Radiohead and U2). Beck's such an interesting artist, constantly changing while also remaining identifiably himself. 1987 UK pressingIn the very early 2000s when I lived in NYC, I used to frequent a great bar called The Grand Press, 284 Grand Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Over time, I slowly became infatuated with one of the bartenders there, a young, beautiful black girl named Yessica (not a typo).
She was stunningly gorgeous, had an incredible body, an infectious personality, & loved music (& musicians).After a month or so, I worked up the courage to ask her out.
She responded with the following:“Do you like Otis Redding?”
“Of course”, I said.
“Name me 10 songs, & you can’t name THAT song.”
I proceeded to name about TWENTY songs, & even sexily sang her a few bars of “My Lover’s Prayer”.
The following 6 months were the most wild & passionate days of my life.

I still have dreams of her.

1984 U.S. pressingI have a great deal of affection for this record, and I’m always baffled by how so little people know it.
A high-energy, #punk -y #powerpop record from the #80s , Let’s Go is a hell of a racket.
These songs are super fun, which is unusual, because The Reducers came from Connecticut, which might be the LEAST fun place on Earth.
As a New Englander myself, I can assure you that is a fact.
They should have broken through.
They were THAT good.
So good in fact, that they opened for The Ramones, David Johansen, and received a significant amount of airplay on college radio.This is their signature album, and the only one I’ll ever need to own. It’s just one of those excellent gems that just seems like a secret between a small group of people.
So great.
