A killer concept record about a Catholic girl who gets engulfed by sex, drugs, and rock n roll, only to be spiritually redeemed at the end.

It’s Springsteen, it’s #punk , it’s boozy bar band rock n roll.

Big and epic sounding, great lyrics, pounding guitars.
Just killer storytelling.

This is where The Hold Steady fully became themselves.

Now, to be honest, if I’m listening to The Hold Steady, it’s.either this or Boys And Girls In America.
I’m not much a fan of anything that came after Boys and Girls, as the production got too big, & came off like classic rock. It was far less believable at that point & a bit contrived sounding.

However, this & the album that followed are legitimately great.

A high-energy, #punk -y #powerpop record from the #80s , Let’s Go is a hell of a racket.

These songs are super fun, which is unusual, because The Reducers came from Connecticut, which might be the LEAST fun place on Earth.

As a New Englander myself, I can assure you that is a fact.

They should have broken through.
They were THAT good.
So good in fact, that they opened for The Ramones, David Johansen, and received a significant amount of airplay on college radio.

This is their signature album, and the only one I’ll ever need to own. It’s just one of those excellent gems that just seems like a secret between a small group of people.

So great.

A pretty cool solo effort from Lowenstein, known for his time spent in Sebadoh, as well as Fiery Furnaces.

This is not too far removed from Sebadoh.
These songs are edgy, guitar-heavy lo-fi garage jams, but there are some countrified rockabilly flourishes here as well, like on “Hey Hey”.

The jam for me is “Superstitious”.
Great drive, loud, and killer.

Really fun record worth checking out if you like Sebadoh, particularly the album Bakesale.

A pretty cool solo effort from Lowenstein, known for his time spent in Sebadoh, as well as Fiery Furnaces.

This is not too far removed from Sebadoh.
These songs are edgy, guitar-heavy lo-fi garage jams, but there are some countrified rockabilly flourishes here as well, like on “Hey Hey”.

The jam for me is “Superstitious”.

Well, after wiping tons of paper & dust debris off both of these records (which was SEALED), & sonic cleaning it twice, this Townes compilation is outstanding.

Despite the PISS POOR quality control, this is an excellent intro course to one of the great genius songwriters of all time.

16 essential TVZ tunes, and a perfect choice for a mellow night at the end of Summer that already feels like Fall.

When I was about 17 or so, I used to frequent a coffee shop on Wednesday nights in Franklin, Ma. called The Grind.

Wednesday was “Open Mic Night”, and it was a steady rotation of the same 15 people or so every week. We all knew each other, and played with each other, switching off like interchangeable parts after we got our two solo tunes.
A frequent one of mine was “If I Needed You”.

Good times.

A collaborative project between members of Duster and Dirty Art Club, Crusher is a record that’s very melancholic, restrained and sleepy. A super dream-like, hazy kind of #Slowcore with warped and warbly edges.

A wonderful late-night #ambient dream-pop album, or if you just wanna chill SEVERELY. It’s so damn comforting.

A pleasant surprise that I’m really enjoying, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it makes my favorite albums of the year list.
