  1. 50 years ago today, September 11, 1976, Dickey Lee debuted at #76 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart with “9, 999, 999 Tears". It went on to peak at #3 for two weeks and spent 18 weeks on the chart.

It’s been a fun and exciting hobby to collect 45 RPM singles in my lifetime. This is one of the classics I was able to buy at my favorite record store that sold new and used records way back then in the 1980s.

  2. MUDDY WATERS & OTIS SPANN
Muddy Waters And Otis Spann In Concert 1958
    1982 UK Mono pressing

    The muddier the better.

Recorded at the Free Trade Hall, Manchester, Sunday October 26, 1958.
This is the complete show, presented in performance order, and was dubbed from the only existing acetate.

One of MANY Muddy Waters records in my library, and Mr. Morganfield is one of the most influential artists on me.

I learned how to write songs when I was a kid by listening to Muddy tapes, and punk tapes.

Muddy may have been the most punk rock motherfucker of all time.

    And by the way…
How awesome is that Krazy Kat label?
    Fantastic.

Can't Stop It! II: Australian Post-Punk 1979-84 (Deluxe Edition)
    2026 Australia 2xLP pressing
    Deluxe Edition

A WONDERFUL belated birthday present from a friend of mine. A friend who clearly understands me through and through.

This was originally a CD compilation released in 2007, and it is FULL of artists I’ve never heard of before.

Bands that cover every umbrella you want to open under the #postpunk moniker.

    There’s spirited #newwave , #dark #minimalism , #industrial , dance-y #electronic post-punk, and everything in between.

One song to the next is its own thing, and it’s fucking fantastic. Other than Severed Heads, there’s not a single band on here that isn’t new to me.

I particularly enjoy the Microfilm and Chainmale tracks.

Cannot recommend this enough, and this particular friend has earned a free dinner.

  23. THE EDSEL AUCTIONEER
    Voice Of The Harolds
    1990 UK pressing

    Sweet-ass noisy Saturday jams.

Kinda grunge-y, super loud indie rock from Leeds, and this is a mini-album that collects their first single, and E.P. material.

Some Dino Jr., Husker Du, My Bloody Valentine and Pale Saints vibes, with great guitars. Super ragged and punchy sounding.

John Peel heard their early demos and was so blown away by them that he brought them in Maida for a Peel session, which they recorded four songs for in 1988.

I desperately need a copy of their 1992 album Simmer.
So if anybody out there sees or comes across one… let’s make a deal.
Yer friendly neighborhood Vinyl Ape will take care of you.

But this is 100% worth checking out if you like any of the bands I compared them to, other genres where they sit.

    BBC Sessions 1977-1979
    2025 Europe pressing
    Blue vinyl

Another solid-sounding Radio Broadcast pressing, and this one is amongst the Joy Division issue as one of my favorites.

Three different Peel Sessions from The Jam here; a pair from 1977, and one from ‘79.

Some savage performances here, particularly “The Modern World”, “Saturday’s Kids” and “Eaton Rifles”.

  26. THE REDUCERS
    Let’s Go
    1984 U.S. pressing

I have a great deal of affection for this record, and I’m always baffled by how so little people know it.

    A high-energy, #punk -y #powerpop record from the #80s , Let’s Go is a hell of a racket.

These songs are super fun, which is unusual, because The Reducers came from Connecticut, which might be the LEAST fun place on Earth.

As a New Englander myself, I can assure you that is a fact.

    They should have broken through.
    They were THAT good.
So good in fact, that they opened for The Ramones, David Johansen, and received a significant amount of airplay on college radio.

This is their signature album, and the only one I’ll ever need to own. It’s just one of those excellent gems that just seems like a secret between a small group of people.

    So great.

  27. THE SMOKE
    The Smoke
    Year Unknown Unofficial reissue

An overlooked gem originally released in 1968; a very obscure #psychedelic #pop record, spearheaded by the then 20 (!) year old Michael Lloyd.

Although it’s a very short record (clocking in at around 29 minutes), you get a lot in that time.

This is a kind of SOFT psychedelia; baroque sunshine pop more than burnout Electra-fried acid rock.
You’ll definitely hear a little Beatles and Beach Boys in here, but either way, this is mostly a studio vehicle for Michael Lloyd’s talents. In this scenario, he’s Lennon, McCartney, and Brian Wilson all wrapped up in one. It’s his show.

The album bombed in ‘68, but now is highly sought after amongst collectors. Original presses go for around $100-$300 depending on what kind of shape it’s in.

    Cool little record.

  28. MARVIN GAYE
    What's Going On
    1974 Canada reissue

A perfect record for a Sunday morning.

I have no life stories to assign to this.
No particular memorable moments that I associate with hearing it.

All I know is that ever since I first heard this album front to back when I was 15, it’s just always made me feel GREAT.

    TRULY soulful.

I hope everyone has a peaceful Sunday.

  29. VERUCA SALT
    American Thighs
    2024 U.S. reissue

    741 am Saturday.
The neighbors are about to get a rude awakening.

This is one of the great albums of the #90s , and for me, very underrated.

I think the majority of people my age who lived though that decade’s music in real time certainly remembers “Seether”, as they should, cuz that’s a great song.

However, American Thighs is full of them. Both Nina Gordon and Louise Post are excellent songwriters, and listening to this album front to back, the contrast of alternating songs from each songwriter, makes for a killer, powerful album.

Heavy, noisy, catchy, great harmonies… it’s a fantastic record, and far more than just one hit song.

  30. FRANK SINATRA
    In The Wee Small Hours
    2025 Worldwide MONO reissue
    Blue Note Tone Poet Series

Friday night with Old Blue Eyes.

These Tone Poet series albums from Blue Note sound otherworldly. I have a few of the Chet Baker ones, and they’re great too.

When I saw this today, and saw that it was a Mono cut by Kevin Gray, I needed no further convincing.

I wish everybody put as much care and detail into the sound of their reissues like these.
    Just magnificent sounding.

Not sure they’d bother giving this same treatment to September Of My Years, but it would certainly make me beyond ecstatic.
