There’s still a trace of new wave tension in this punk release in the rhythms, but the core energy is distinctly punk and direct, urgent, and confrontational. The vocals push forward with attitude and nervous intensity, giving the songs a street-level immediacy...

  13. THE DEAD MILKMEN
Big Lizard in My Backyard (40th Anniversary)
    2026 U.S. reissue
    Red vinyl

I literally shrieked with delight when I saw this in the shop today.

The Dead Milkmen’s first studio album, & the very first one I heard.

This was another band that I got into via one of my sister’s boyfriends in the late #80s .
He was quite obsessed with the band, & one summer, he was nice enough to make me a blank tape copy of this on side A, & Beelzebubba on side B.

Short, hilarious songs rife with satire, and super scruffy in the best possible way.

You know, both of my sisters’ boyfriends in the 80s may have been shitty boyfriends, but they had excellent taste in music.
I learned of about 50 awesome bands from them collectively.

My sister: “I’m breaking up with Matt.”

Me: “I beg you to reconsider.”

    My sister: “No.”

Me: “Can you wait a few days after I can borrow some more tapes?”

  14. 🇨🇭 The Young Gods "Play Kurt Weill" – 1991

  17. SONS
    Minus Seeds And Stems
    1972 U.S. pressing

One of the coolest and rarest records in my library, and one that I don’t pull out that often.

Super obscure, it’s a self-released album by The Sons Of Champlin. They put it out themselves after two years of contractual conflict between them & their label.

Not a slick finished studio album by any means, but a stunning odds and ends kind of a recording.

    Is it #jazz ? #Psych ? #Rock ?
    Who knows.

It’s a mix of live recordings, improvs, rehearsal recordings, psych-jazz freakouts, & more. Really killer sounding late #60s San Francisco Freeform jams with NASTY ASS GUITAR PLAYING.

Original copies like this became highly collectible because the record was privately pressed in very small numbers and was never widely distributed. It remained unavailable on CD for decades & developed a reputation as one hell of a strange artifact.

  19. RICHARD BEIRACH
    Eon
    1975 U.S. pressing

A stellar early evening slice of cool #jazz .

It would make sense that I really love this record, seeing that I’m a fan of Bill Evans. There’s some similarities here in the music, but BEIRACH stretches things out into a more atmospheric and pensive direction in some spots.
It’s far more romantic sounding and less in-your-face as some of Bill’s recordings.

There’s a 12 minute version of Miles Davis’ “Nardis”, another piece that was long associated with Evans.
Here, it comes off very hypnotic.

Eon is a very underrated album from that whole mid-#70s ECM period.
A perfect ‘unwinding in the early evening’ kind of record.

  20. THE TOURISTS
    Reality Effect
    1980 Canada pressing

Unearthed this gem from my basement today!

Super awesome #80s #newwave / #indie rock that lead to Dave Stewart & Annie Lennox forming The Eurythmics after they disbanded.

The album opener “It Doesn’t Have To Be This Way” is killer. But it’s a bummer that they put their cover of “I Only Wanna Be With You” as track 2.

I can totally do without that song, but if you HAVE to put it on… put it near the end of the record. It just disrupts the awesome tone that the opening track sets. It’s completely unnecessary.

That song aside, the rest of the album is truly excellent.
It’s tighter, more polished, and way catchier than their previous self-titled effort.

UK fans may notice the track listing and sequencing is different here.
That was the case for all North American issues, omitting two songs & changing the order.

  23. EDDIE RABBITT
Someone Could Lose A Heart Tonight
    1985 Canada pressing

Yer old pal Ape has a DEEP love and affection for Eddie Rabbitt.

That love goes way back to when I was 4 or 5 years old. I always used to hear him on my uncles’ country and soft rock stations, and it made quite an impression over the years.

    This compilation is incredible.
It has every Eddie banger you could ever want, including the schmaltzy (but wonderful) “You And I” duet with Crystal Gayle.
Country, rock, folk, ballads, the dude could do it all.
He even wrote “Kentucky Rain” for Elvis.

It’s crazy listening to this, because it becomes very apparent just how many instantly recognizable hit songs he had.

Eddie died way too young from lung cancer at 56 years old.
I’ve always felt that he’s one of the most underrated songwriters of all time.
Just so many great tunes, man.

  24. PALE SAINTS
    In Ribbons (30th Anniversary Re:Masters)
    2023 Worldwide Remastered Reissue

A masterpiece of the #shoegaze genre.
I have as much reverence for this as I do Ride’s Nowhere or Slowdive’s Souvlaki.

This remaster is phenomenal sounding! Clearer and louder, but not in any off-putting way. It’s very tastefully done, and it sounds the best it’s ever sounded.

The odd time signatures on a few of the songs has always been its most endearing quality for me. The guitars are great (super trippy and psych sounding), but it’s those rhythmic structures that have always stood out most.

“Ordeal” is mind-bendingly heavy and massive, “Throwing Back The Apple” is jangly and pastoral, and “Thread Of Light” features a beautiful vocal Meriel Barham.

Their final, and what I think is their BEST record.
I know I’m in the minority there, but it is.

  25. THE B-52’s
    Wild Planet
    1980 Canada pressing

The second B-52’s album, not as good as the first.
However, I’ve always had great affection for this album due to three songs in particular; “Private Idaho”, “Devil In My Car”, and “Give Me Back My Man”, which together make it worth owning.

Besides, Fred Schneider is, as usual, in “full Schneider” mode.
    Great fun.

Down And Out In Beverly Hills
    1986 U.S. pressing

DOWN AND OUT IN BEVERLY HILLS is one of those movies I saw as a kid about 50 times.

It’s also the very first time I heard Randy Newman’s “I Love L.A.”, a song everybody thinks is celebratory because of its catchy hooks & usage at Lakers basketball games.

However, it’s a wonderfully scathing criticism of everything that’s obnoxious & awful about the city.

As a person who goes to Los Angeles regularly, I can’t help but hear that song in my head when walking around, & not in a good way.
It’s a brilliant song; the verses are completely detached from that catchy chorus, sarcastically taking down wealth, artifice, vanity, superficiality, & the city’s overall absurdity.

It’s a great song, surrounded by a few Little Richard bangers and David Lee Roth on Side A, & the film’s score pieces on Side B.

  43. THE WOLFE TONES
    Rifles Of The I.R.A.
    1971 Canada pressing

A lovely, VERY IRISH sounding folk record for a Sunday afternoon.

I found this in a thrift store not long after I moved to Canada around ‘07. It just looked really cool, and I assumed it would be some Irish folk record, and I was right.

However, I wasn’t prepared for how this album would catch me. I absolutely fell in love with it.
It’s got all the bells and whistles of traditional Irish folk balladry. Banjos, guitars, sing-along pub chants, whistles… the whole works.

However… it’s got a kind of political rebel spirit underneath, the same kind that all the punk rock I listened to as a kid had.
    I just adore these songs.
    Particularly “The Sun Is Burning”.

Sometimes it sounds like Suicide or Kraftwerk, and other times like the synthiest, poppiest #80s bands; like Depeche Mode or even Duran Duran.
It’s a SUPER-FUN record, and hits me like all the classic bands and albums of the #synthpop #artrock albums of the late #70s and early eighties.
