For 21 years I held the distinction of being the last mastering engineer in North America to cut music on a commercial basis using Direct Metal Mastering - but I am happy to say that this distinction has now ended, with not just one, but two studios now offering DMM to the general public - Sterling Sound in Nashville with a new "ARC33" DMM spec compatible cutting system built by GZ Media, and Gotta Groove in Columbus, Ohio with a custom lathe built by Thorsten Scheffner of Organic Music.

In DMM a specially made record lathe uses a diamond stylus to cut into a layer of copper electro-plated over a steel substrate (instead of the more usual heated sapphire stylus cutting into a layer of lacquer coated on an aluminium substrate). This "metal mother" can then be directly plated with nickel to create the stamper that goes into a record press, avoiding 2 extra steps typically needed when plating from traditional lacquer master discs.
Since 2005, when Europadisk where I worked closed, there have still been a handful of DMM capable mastering studios in Europe, as well as the Scientologists in California (who bought at auction the lathe I used to cut masters for the likes of Foo Fighters & Martha Wash) cutting L Ron Hubbard's speeches to copper discs for placement into time capsules. But for those of us in North America that wanted the option for DMM for their vinyl pressings, it meant greater expenses and longer delays, contracting to European facilities. That is, until now.

Given that lacquer master disc blanks are now produced solely by a single company in Japan, this revival will also help better guarantee that vinyl record production can continue on into the future. So: wishing very best of success to the brave folks that have invested into keeping a technology I was privileged to get to use "back in the day"!

Revisiting an absolute classic for breakfast.

One of the 1st truly great albums of the #2000s , regardless of genre.

A warm, funky, organic neo-soul record for the ages.
It fits right next to Deangelo’s Voodoo, & to be honest, it’s hard for me to hear THIS album without immediately wanting to put Voodoo on next.

If you want total freedom in life, then you gotta leave a lot of shit behind.
How willing are you to let things go?
How free do you wanna be?

These are the questions I was forced to think about when I first heard this record when I was 23 and living in NYC.

The bass and drums on this record will always be my favorite thing about it, ESPECIALLY the drums.

They’re kinda dusty, dull-edged, but still very dynamic and human sounding.

Just an incredible 72 minutes.

I decided to give this Sharp Pins record (which was in a used bin) a try, as over the last month, more than a few people told me I’d e joy it, and because I liked the small sample of stuff I tried online.

Really cool #lofi #indie #alternative pop that is a total “one man gang” effort by Chicago musician/artist Kai Slater.

This was recorded at both his home and personal studio in Chicago, and reminds me so much of the scruffy indie #90s music I grew up on, but there’s something extra here.
It’s also more jangly and #powerpop -ish than it is slacker rock. Along with the Sebadoh & Pavement vibes, there’s some Guided By Voices, some Beatles, even a little British Invasion shit.

I went downtown this morning out of sheer boredom and ended up coming home with a pile of really nice finds.

I decided to give this Sharp Pins record (which was in a used bin) a try, as over the last month, more than a few people told me I’d e joy it, and because I liked the small sample of stuff I tried online.

Really cool #lofi #indie #alternative pop that is a total “one man gang” effort by Chicago musician/artist Kai Slater.

This was recorded at both his home and personal studio in Chicago, and reminds me so much of the scruffy indie #90s music I grew up on, but there’s something extra here.
It’s also more jangly and #powerpop -ish than it is slacker rock. Along with the Sebadoh & Pavement vibes, there’s some Guided By Voices, some Beatles, even a little British Invasion shit.

Really cool record. 💥

This is probably going in a frame to hang somewhere in my house. The thing I like about this particular picture sleeve is that I can display EITHER side of it.
The image of The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas on the back is equally as great.
