I enjoyed this interview with Hana Stretton and am really enjoying her second album.
"Ambient folk" might suggest innocuous background music, but it's interesting and engaging, IMO. There's mention of her being championed by Phil Elverum / The Microphones / Mount Eerie, and that makes sense to me.

I used to laud the fact that Youtube enabled folk/traditional music to come onto its platform without undue restrictions. That day is long-gone. There was already a growing trend of fake pap appearing, often flaunting racist ethnology, but the use LLms (so-called AI) has put this trend onto steroids.

A bit of a thread (and, yes, a rant)...
I did a search today on Youtube for "tin whistle" and got around 50 long videos of obvious AI slop posted over the previous 24 hours; and probably more that I didn't immediately recognise as such. A deluge of a-historical drivel that is an now active attack upon the real folk music and dance traditions of Britain and Ireland (and elsewhere no doubt).

TIL that Archie Fisher wrote a sequel to The Witch of the West-Mer-Land (best known for being covered by Stan Rogers) where the knight, made invulnerable when he was healed by the witch, returns to find her as he is finally, inevitably, dying of old age, and is carried off by her in her centaur form to the otherworld, reunited with the spirits of his steed, hounds, and hawk. Fisher never recorded it but the group The Waybacks did.
