"The Entertainer" is a 1902 #classicPianoRag written by #ScottJoplin. It was sold first as sheet music by #JohnStarkAndSon of #SaintLouisMissouri, and in the 1910s as #pianoRolls that would play on #playerPianos. The first recording was by #blues and #ragtime musicians "the #BlueBoys" in 1928, played on #mandolin and #guitar. We were sitting around playing rags at Clifftop and started trying to define what makes a tune a "rag". Some fiddle tunes have "rag" in the title but clearly aren't. We decided that to be a rag it has to originate in the jazz genre. Otherwise it is just a sparkling fiddle tune.

From @aaj : Scott Joplin personified ragtime; he was its chief champion, the figure most closely associated with its composition. It was Joplin's short, hard-driving melodies- -and the syncopated backbone he furnished them—that helped define the musical parameters of ragtime, a style that gave voice to the African American experience during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
In a move not uncommon for young blacks at the time, Joplin left home in his early teens, working as an itinerant pianist at honky-tonks and salons of the Midwest, South, and Southwest. The true origin of the music was to be found in these low rent musical halls. The signature fast and frenetic pace of ragtime reflected the jubilant side of the black experience—compared with the melancholy-heavy blues—and the music became, according to Blesh and Janis, America's "most original artistic creation."

Not only was Crumb an insanely gifted cartoonist and illustrator, he was a really fantastic musician, and his records are just really fun old-timey awesomeness.
Just classic #Ragtime #blues and #jazz with that special warped Crumb twist on it.
Stoked to find this today.
Now I have TWO Crumb records.
There always worth owning just for the Crumb artwork alone.

Musical Interlude: Modern composer William Bolcom is technically regarded as a modern classical musician, but his leanings are very much toward jazz. He created a cycle of piano rags that are charming works. The "Graceful Ghost Rag" is justly famous, and I'm sure I've featured it before, but here's another rag just as nice.
