  2. Fire Danger!
    Please sign & share

Mayor Wilson's initial budget proposal could "reassign half of Station 22's staff and take its only fire engine."

St Johns' Station 22 is the closest fire station left to the high risk CEI hub, right next door to Linnton and at special risk because of the consistent flow of oil trains and Zenith's mobile storage of many, many crude oil cars on the RR tracks in the CEI Hub and next to HWY 30, most of which has no guard rail.

The city has already done away with the closest Fire Stations and Hazmat stations in or near Linnton, which fire officials have noted is the neighborhood most at risk for wild fires in Portland.

Fire risk has been greatly increased with climate change, with increased heat and drought. Forest Park is right next to the CEI Hub, and we are heading into another high-risk wildfire summer like we experienced in 2020.

Some of the fire fighters at the St. Johns station have special training in fighting forest fires.

New budget amendments are due from the council by May 16.

As It Shutters, Beleaguered Shelter Operator Says All 175 Staff Will Lose Their Jobs

    By Andrew Schwartz
    April 10, 2026

Excerpt: "Late last month, WW reported that two homeless shelters funded by the city Portland would close after the nonprofit contracted to run them shuttered amid allegations of fiscal mismanagement.

"In a WARN notice posted publicly this week, that nonprofit, Sunstone Way, indicated the scale of the impact for its own staff: By the end of June, all 175 of them would lose their jobs.

"In the notice, Sunstone Way HR said it had 'anticipated the city of Portland would continue operating the shelters that Sunstone Way currently operates.'

"Instead, it said, it had just received notice from the city to the contrary. The 96-bed Centennial shelter that Sunstone Way had operated was now expected to close by April 30. A 38-unit pod shelter complex on Northeast Weidler Street in the Lloyd District would close altogether.

"Meanwhile, the letter added, Sunstone Way’s Naito shelter would, after June 30, continue to operate with new management.

"The resulting layoffs encompass a range of vocations. According to the notice filed with the state, workers losing their jobs include a mix of full-time, part-time and on-call shelter staff as well as case managers, office workers, and 41 people in management.

"Sunstone Way’s troubles date back years, WW has reported, and the nonprofit had been losing shelter contracts lately with both the city and Multnomah County. But its problems escalated rapidly in the period before it said it would shutter entirely. "

  15. Good Morning, News: Chuck Norris Dies, City Councilor Sends Very Spicy Emails, #Homeless Services Org Needs Support After Four Recent Fires, and Buzzfeed Let AI Prompt Its Downfall

Time is running out to tell the Trump administration what you think about its proposal to drastically scale up logging in Oregon's old-growth forests. The US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced a plan last month that would quadruple the amount of allowed logging in western Oregon's forests, in hopes of increasing timber yield harvest to about 1 billion board feet annually. Last year, the BLM yielded around 250 million board feet in the same area, so this would be a dramatic increase-akin to what was being harvested prior to restrictions that were put in place in the 1990s (remember the Northern Spotted Owl!??). Some in the timber industry celebrated the proposal, as did leaders in parts of Oregon that historically relied on logging money and have suffered economically since the restrictions went into place. It speaks to major problems within Oregon's government and budget system that these rural logging counties have not been able to recover in the 30+ years since the BLM was las

  18. Kevin Sampsell's New Novel Looks at the World Through a Baby in the Night

When we find stuff to hate it means we're becoming more like grown-ups. by Jeremiah Hayden Tony Ventura, the main character of Kevin Sampsell's surreal novel Baby in the Night, doesn't have the words or the context to understand his surroundings; he's only two years old after all.. "It was like my brain really wanted to but my mouth didn't know how yet or maybe just didn't try hard enough," Tony says of learning how to talk.. But as the first-person narrator, Tony is well-suited to describe his world in fresh ways. He can't lean on stereotypes; he can only learn about the world as he perceives it, tabula rasa. This makes for a compelling story about a boy searching for his departed father, who he believes is the Moon. Tony shows childlike compassion for people living in poverty, including his own mother, as cynicism hasn't yet damaged his world.. See everything in the 2026 Spring Arts Guide collection here. 19. The Mercury's 2026 Spring Arts Preview: We Need Art to Survive

You don't have to have an art focus to benefit from art. by Suzette Smith It was staff writer Lindsay Costello who inspired this issue's theme. During a new year discussion about our team's goals, she mentioned: "More and more, I am realizing that we need art to survive.". The phrase seemed deeply relevant, working in two ways: We need art to survive for our personal enrichment and enjoyment. We need art to survive for its own longevity, so it can be around for us and those who come after us.. 2025 was difficult for everyone-seriously, show me whose life has been made easier by the second Trump presidency; even his allies are anxiety-sweating through their sheets-but the chaos of sudden, massive cuts to National Endowment for the Arts and other government programs shook arts and culture institutions who had come to rely on and take pride in that funding.. Last month, Commissioner Shannon Singleton became the first major contender to declare her candidacy for the position being vacated by Jessica Vega Pederson. She was quickly joined by her fellow commissioner, Julia Brim-Edwards. Voters will decide in a ranked choice election in November who will take the helm.. Singleton, who was elected to the Board in 2024 in a special election to represent a district that covers North and Northeast Portland, told the Mercury that she joined the race because she believes she can better serve the county as an executive rather than a legislator. . PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — "The mayor of Portland, Oregon, demanded U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement leave his city after federal agents launched #TearGas at a crowd of demonstrators — including young children — outside an #ICE facility during a weekend protest that he characterized as peaceful.

"Witnesses said agents deployed tear gas, #PepperBalls and #RubberBullets as thousands of marchers arrived at the South Waterfront facility on Saturday. Erin Hoover Barnett, a former #OregonLive reporter who joined the protest, said she was about 100 yards (90 meters) from the building when 'what looked like two guys with rocket launchers' started dousing the crowd with gas.

" 'To be among parents frantically trying to tend to little children in strollers, people using motorized carts trying to navigate as the rest of us staggered in retreat, unsure of how to get to safety, was terrifying,' Barnett wrote in an email to OregonLive."

  26. Good Morning, News: Oregon DOJ Goes After Planned ICE Facility, the Incomplete Epstein Files, and Girl. Nicki Minaj Needs HELP

Attorneys with the Oregon Department of Justice are asking a federal judge to slam the brakes on Trump's plan to construct an ICE gulag immigrant detention center in the community of Newport, Oregon. As you may recall, the feds have been quietly scouting around for employees to run their impromptu jail, so they can use the local airport to fly hundreds of kidnapped detainees out of the country, most likely using planes they've purchased themselves. Oregon lawyers are accusing the Trump administration of violating the law by planning the detention center without going through the proper channels-because of course they haven't. "Téllez was on his way to drop his kids at school in north Portland when he was pulled out of his car by federal agents. "The arrest drew dozens of neighbors into the streets to record the arrest and push back against immigration authorities. www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news. [image or embed]. - Rachel Maddow (@maddow.bsky.social) December 21, 2025 at 1:53 PM. Last Friday, Multnomah County released its annual Domicile Unknown report, which counts the number of #houseless people who died this year-and while it's less than 2024 (by 18 percent), 372 Multnomah County neighbors still perished on the streets in 2025. And that's too much. by 372. Worse still, those deaths were preventable, and our Jeremiah Hayden has the story on how we got here and where we need to be. In related news, experts are calling Portland's affordable housing program "a business model that's failing," citing frustratingly long wait times for those wanting to get into units, and a surplus of empty "affordable" apartments that are far too expensive, deemed uninhabitable, or too costly for landlords to run. The O's Jonathan Bach does a deep dive into why this is the case, and what can be done about it. .   Staff members on the TriMet Safety Response Team-which acts as an unarmed security force designed to deescalate tense situations on trains and busses rather than calling in the police-have announced their intention to form a worker's union. Since they aren't technically TriMet employees-they were hired by the city-contracted private security company, Portland Patrol, Inc.-they don't have the same sort of protections as other TriMet employees, and are fighting back against what they claim is a hostile work environment, unfair compensation, and less than adequate support from their bosses. Our Taylor Griggs explains more in this fascinating story. Conceived last year by Dying Wish as a remedy for how often bands skip hometown shows when on tour, the second year of their holiday rager was even bigger and more brutal. While we can expect some rain this week-as opposed to the flooding experienced from last week's uninvited deluge-no major storms have been predicted for the immediate future. However, last week's floods have caused major damage across the state, including flooded homes next to the Clackamas River just outside of Portland, and landslides in Oregon City which led to the evacuation of families. It's time for the POP QUIZ PDX-this week featuring the top questions of 2025! How much do YOU remember about Portland's robot dogs, Blazer scandals, and that time Kristi "ICE Barbie" Noem came (uninvited) to town? . PLUS! Your vote for the most heroic hero of 2025! (See how well you score!)[image or embed]. - Portland Mercury (@portlandmercury.com) December 18, 2025 at 1:31 PM. IN NATIONAL/WORLD NEWS:. In another example of why it's important to support news organizations you can trust: CBS news-now under the helm of craven Trump minion Bari Weiss-abruptly yoinked a planned segment from last night's episode of 60 Minutes about immigrant detainees being shipped to a maximum security "mega prison" in El Salvador, and only minutes before the show was about to air. Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi, who reported the story, is accusing Weiss of yanking the segment due to "political reasons," because it provided proof that the Trump administration is kidnapping immigrants and shipping them off to a dangerous prison that puts detainees through "months of hell." For her part, Weiss denies there were any shenanigans afoot. "Holding stories that aren't ready for whatever reason-that they lack sufficient context, say, or that they are missing critical voices-happens every day in every newsroom," she said in a dismissive tone that sounded very much like a lie. A brief clip of a '60 Minutes' investigation pulled at the last minute by the CBS boss is spreading like wildfire on social media amid fears of Trump-friendly censorship. Democratic lawmakers are threatening Attorney General Pam Bondi with contempt, saying she purposefully omitted key information from Friday's last-second drop of the Epstein files. Claiming the release had too many redactions and missing information, lawmakers say they can invoke the rarely used charge of "inherent contempt" to Bondi for "obstructing legislative functions." Meanwhile, Bondi is claiming the feds are attempting to protect Epstein's victims by leaving out certain information. ummmm. so is that why a photo of Trump appearing alongside the sex offender mysteriously disappeared from Friday's records dump? (Apparently, opinions about who the true "victims" are may vary.). More than a dozen survivors of Jeffrey Epstein are demanding immediate congressional action Monday following the Justice Department's botched release of files on the disgraced financier - a release they said failed to comply with a newly enacted law. What do you call a gathering for the absolute WORST people in the world? The AmericaFest convention, thrown by the late Charlie Kirk's Turning Point USA organization, in which deeply shitty Republicans shared their warped visions for the country's future. Though hilariously, instead of torching their opponents on the left, the GOP buttholes spent most of the convention attacking their fellow buttholes, labeling each other "morally bankrupt," "cowards," and in some cases "a cancer." (They ain't wrong!) Disappointingly, former beloved rapper Nicki Minaj took the stage with Kirk's widow to slam California governor Gavin Newsom and incorrectly label Trump as an "amazing role model" as well as being. "handsome and dashing?" GIRRRRRRRRL, YOU NEED HELP. Stephen Miller erupted after a tow truck driver who hauled off a federal vehicle during an immigration arrest was found not guilty. Happy #Hanukkah! Hanukkah begins at sundown today, and during those years when the holiday falls within the #BeerAdventCalendar dates, I like to select a #beer to commemorate it. In that vein, today’s beer comes from #LeikamBrewing of #PortlandOregon, a kosher, community-centric brewery, which brews up a winter IPA for the Festival of Lights: Maccabeer IPA.

  28. People in Portland, Oregon:
(a message from Hygiene4All and the Welcome Home Coalition)

You’ve got the power to tell our Mayor & County Chair to invest in the solutions proven to stop neighbors from becoming & staying homeless.

Honor the self-described needs of those experiencing homelessness! :

    * Move funds for encampment sweeps, RV removals fining & jailing that prolong homelessness to investments preventing evictions & assisting with rent that end homelessness.

    * Shift spending from expanding dead-end “overnight only shelter” to rent assistance & peer support & case management that open a concrete path to housing & stability for those currently stuck on the streets & in 24 hour shelters.

    * Publicly buy discounted private sector apartments & hotels to immediately expand permanent affordable housing that will protect us from the market speculation driving rents ever higher. (Recently, our City added several hundred affordable units in weeks at a fraction of new building construction cost. )

Together we can change direction and do better!

Lela Schwartz and Mike Edera of the DSA (Democratic Socialists of America) Housing Working Group lay out their campaign for the Renters Bill of Rights, a nine-point program soon to be brought to the Portland City Council to adopt as an ordinance. Copied largely from a similar measure led by the Tacoma DSA and passed by voters there, the Renters Bill of Rights seeks to limit rent increases, fees and evictions without costing the Portland taxpayer.

The DSA sees this campaign, which features a Renters Town Hall on Saturday, September 20th, 2-4pm at PCC SE, as part of their overall socialist program to build working class power.
