  1. Musical Interlude: Let us go to that smoky cabaret down the street, where a slinky singer sings about awaiting sweet widowhood, a chanson straight out of a French film noir...

  2. Musical Interlude: Here's a local-to-me performer, doing a wonderful anthem to persistence and strength. It's written for women in abusive/controlling relationships, but it meant a lot to me when I lost a job and was facing an uncertain future.

  6. Musical Interlude: Listened to a composer I was unfamiliar with today, and liked him a lot. Norwegian Christian Sinding is often viewed as the successor to Edvard Grieg, but I enjoy him more. His reputation in Norway suffered because he was supposed to be a member of the Nazi party, but it turns out he was suffering from dementia at the time (he died in 1941) and was being used and manipulated for the sake of PR. Before the onset of dementia he'd been an opponent of the Nazis and had fought for the rights of Jewish musicians. These days he's being rediscovered and his reputation rehabilitated.

  15. Musical interlude: Joseph Bologne, the Chevalier de Saint-George, is one of those zesty characters we need to read more about. The acknowledged, yet illegitimate, son of a Caribbean planter and an enslaved woman, he was sent to France to be educated, and became a noted fender, athlete, musician, composer, and conductor. There's already been at least one film about him, and he should be taught about in schools. Often referred to as "the Black Mozart," his compositions encapsulate the Baroque period.

"Sonata for Harpsichord & Violin, No. 3," composed by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-George, performed by Bridgette Haudebourg and Jean-Jacques Kantorow.

  27. Musical Interlude: At the Old Time Festival, I saw the Golden Shoals (again). I saw them first when they were called the Hoot and Hollers...not sure why they changed their name, but oh well. I'm not a huge fan of their recordings, which are hit and miss for me, but live they're fun. This song came from a visit the singer made to an elderly musician who invited her to stay for a few days, and they lazed about the house in the mountains, puttering and making music. It's a great "vibe" song for a lazy weekend.

  35. Musical Interlude: I chanced on Noah Gundersen's music a few years ago, and still can't make up my mind about him. Sometimes he's appealing, sometimes he seems too angry and self-involved. 41. Musical Interlude: Listening to some classical today, and this popped up, an old favorite. A musical illustration of two caravans traveling the Silk Road, each with their own musical motif, and as they meet and cross paths, their motifs combine. It's a great piece for music-appreciation classes, and a classic bit of musical orientalism.

(Note about the orientalism: I've seem some condemn orientalism as cultural appropriation, but in all honesty, Borodin and a lot of others always were open about their inspiration for their works, and didn't pretend they came up with it themselves...so as long as you credit your inspiration, that meets my standards for acceptability.)

  42. Musical Interlude: A random thought brought this wonderful song to mind...a Spanish-language hit from the 70s, it's a passionate love song declaring that the subject is all that gives the singer life and hope. It's a gloriously primal song...but just a damn good song even if you don't understand the words.
