New: Elizabeth Robinson's chapter in the third volume of Teaching and Learning Classics at the University Level (2026) addresses the importance of studying ancient topography and physical landscapes, introduces skills and tools associated with ancient geography and digital mapping, and suggests engaging with research projects beyond the classroom, including Pleiades and other digital cartography projects. Example projects shared by colleagues (including a number of other #PleiadesGazetteer contributors) are presented.

Archaeologists have debated its origin and purpose. Although in late antiquity, Pausanias referred to a local "polyandrion"(πολυάνδριον/ collective burial mound), today it is regarded as a fortified watchtower (pyrgion/πυργίον) or a fire-signal tower (fryktoria/φρυκτωρία).

It was the main ancient sanctuary at Ai Khanoum (Takhar Province, Afghanistan), built in a mixture of Greek and Mesopotamian styles under the #Seleucids and rebuilt under the #Diodotids in the 240s BCE, again in the early 2rd century BCE and in the reign of Eukratides (ca. 170-140 BCE).

  24. New in the #PleiadesGazetteer help section: How to add a bibliographic record to Zotero

    pleiades.stoa.org/help/how-to-

We have long had a document that provides step-by-step instructions on adding references to external web pages, books, articles, and other resources to "place", "name", "location", and "connection" resources, but the procedure for adding entirely new work records to our Zotero library has been in flux and undocumented. Thanks to the work of the volunteer "Pleiades References Wranglers", we now have a more stable process and clear documentation.

The usual Monday blog post will summarize the full week's worth of such work, but meantime, here's a #SneakPeek at a subset of the new material! New contributor Joe Scholten has been building out place records for the major features of the archaeological site of Thermon in Aetolia (Greece): pleiades.stoa.org/places/541139

He's given us entirely new entries for the Bouleuterion, Central Spring House, circuit wall, and major excavated stoas, as well as updated bibliography and connections for other components already in the gazetteer.

On the place page for Thermon, scroll down to "Thermon receives connections from" and then use the links there to see the detailed work he's done (or just click on the green "bowtie" icons in the map).

  28. Since Monday, the #PleiadesGazetteer editorial college has published 20 new and 185 updated place resources, reflecting the work of 23 individuals and external projects. The usual Monday blog post will summarize the full week's worth of such work, but meantime, here's a #SneakPeek at several new place resources corresponding to major monuments at the site of Sabratha in modern Libya. Sabratha was the westernmost of the "three cities" of Tripolis, founded ca. 500 B.C. by the Phoenicians. The city was part of the Numidian Kingdom of Massinissa before becoming a Roman city. The green bowtie symbols mark structures/sites at or near Sabratha, among which you'll find three Jeff Becker just contributed: the Baths of Oceanus, the Roman theater, and the Temple of Isis.
