  1. haha .. what, kiddy ?!

#humans don't always act as morally as they say they are, so "we" (whoever that is) prefer #computers which do not have a concept of #morality at all - but that they can do much faster

    thats not a #thesis 😅

    not even close

I’ve recenlty made a repayment (from savings) to the ATO against my #StudentDebt.

About 10 years ago, I got it into my head to go back to UNI. I worked for 2 years on a Master of Translation (Adv) at ANU, and I enjoyed every minute of it only to come unstuck at the very end. With less than a semester of work to do I hit a wall. Well several walls in fact.

The first was that I ran out of courses to study within the School and didn’t want to undertake something I wasn’t interested in.

The Second was finding out that my thesis could not be the translation and publication of a book I wanted to do, it had to be something which would advance translation research to qualify. I did find another way to do that and my idea was to research whether “Livres de Gares” (aka airport novels) were purposely written for translation and whether these had similar linguistic characteristics which could be computationally determined.

My Supervisor and I thought it would be a good project and I genuinely felt enthused about it. That is until I dug deeper into it. It required me to fork off into Digital humanities to obtain expertise in linguistic computation; coding, scripting, parsing and tagging text as well as applied statistics. The more I looked into it, the more the whole thing looked like a multidisciplinary project. I was defeated (allowed myself to be defeated?) by the amount of work and more importantly, the cost in terms of stress and finance. I couldn’t afford either.

I’ve just had a look at my #HECS-HELP statement… only $35,000 or so to go…

  5. Conway's Game of Life running on #helios #ECS engine with 22,500 entities. Every cell is an entity, updated in real time. Fun stress test for iteration throughput, cache locality, and deterministic updates, and part of my MCSc #thesis project.

  6. A speculative framework questioning some of our most basic assumptions about reality.

The Point–Dimensional Emergence Framework (PDEF) explores a possibility where time is not a dimension with extension, but a point-like construct — something that does not “flow”, but instead emerges from how a deeper structure is observed.

  7. 🤔 Ah, the timeless debate: is it the thought or the word that comes first? Looks like Devarsh has cracked the code with his #groundbreaking #thesis that #LLMs are mere word puppets because, wait for it... their ideas don’t precede their words! 😂 Truly, a #revelation that will change how we ignore the obvious forever. 🤦‍♂️

  11. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🌵🔥 #Phoenix sidewalks can hit 66º C (~150° F) in direct #sun while shade stays below 38º C (~100° F) – a real problem for anyone walking to class.

#ASU researchers and #students built Cool Routes, an online #map that calculates sun exposure to suggest less-sweaty paths across campus. In tests the tool found cooler routes over 70% of the time, and the team is now building a mobile version through an undergraduate #thesis.

  13. For the record, here are the other impulsive, spontaneous, unhinged research questions I came up with in 10 minutes of rapid brainstorming, last Wednesday.

    • How can decentralised, peer-to-peer, and encrypted communication protocols favour the development of autonomous and localised yet federated communities?
    • What concrete communication technologies can already be adopted to prepare for a post-climate collapse world?
    • How can practices of networking and collaboration benefit the re-population of rural areas?
    • What role did the neoliberal progression of tech oligopolies play in the de-politicisation of technology?
    • How can community-maintained infrastructure serve the needs of all the World’s population?

  15. Research question prophecy

I am far from actually beginning my research for the thesis I will be writing at @xpub next year. Still, together with my class we are already exploring interests, ideas, and PMOMMs. A pattern should be emerging out of them, outlining our research focus.

Yesterday, as I was chatting with @barbs, I somehow came up with a research question that feels particularly close to me. I am publishing it here for posterity, because I am super curious about how this will evolve over time.

What is the relationship between in-person networking and Web surfing in accruing social capital?

I want to investigate how life crossovers relate with clicking links and surfing the Web. Then, how do the two contribute to growing a person’s (or a community’s) social capital, in the interpretation of the word specific to Bourdieu’s philosophy?

  17. Three days before the final deadline, I cannot access my data! 🚨

Today, server outages at Atlas.ti prohibit me from entering the programme. Double bad that my analysis data is stored in a proprietary atlas.ti format which makes it extra hard to extract and import somewhere else...

This proves that we need open software and data formats! The reliance of universities on proprietary software is ultimately a hindrance to academic work!
