English "cow" comes from Proto-Indo-European *gʷeh₃-u-s [gwous], perhaps something like this (listen):

and very many other Indo-European languages, such as Ancient Greek βοῦς [bous]:

New video interview
The Greek Alphabet Is Older Than We Thought
with Dr. Willemijn Waal"evidence may point to a significantly earlier introduction of alphabetic writing into Greece, perhaps around or before the 11th century BCE."

Surely I'm not the first to notice a similarity between the Lojban's apostrophe (that makes the H sound) and the Ancient Greek rough breathing mark ◌̔ (that makes the same sound).
I've not found any direct evidence that the latter influenced the former (not that I did much research into it anyway) but I like to think there was some secret Ancient Greek admirer among the lojban creators

Here's a tricky puzzle! This section of Greek text appeared in in the (Latin) Einsiedeln itinerary, Einsiedeln MS 326 (9th c.) amidst a bunch of Latin inscriptions and poems. It's Greek-ish, maybe Coptish, but we can't assume the scribe understood Greek as opposed to sort of drawing a picture of some Greek words. The word spacing seems off. Something about petra (either rock, or Peter, or both?) And what are the twisty Ys with a dot in the martini glass?
Something like maybe
"τον θεον λογον θενσε χρυσω
την θεοτα υπτον πετραν εν η
βεβηκωσ ουκλονυμ" ??? -
Hmmm, is it bad for me to try and understand the summary of, let's say, Book 1 of an EPIC POEM (The Odyssey), because I don't fully know the backstory behind the Ancient Greek gods?
Or should I read the Iliad first?
Damn

Melanippe (#AncientGreek: Μελανίππη), or Melanippium or Melanippion (Μελανίππιον), was a small town on the coast of #ancientLycia, on the western slope of Mount Phoenicus, about 30 #stadia from #CapeHieron, and 60 stadia south of #Gagae, of which #WilliamMartinLeake wrote it was the port town. The site is on the #KaraözLimanı.

Oh, the word "#love"! So #misused, so #misunderstood! Perhaps because it has too many meanings. AFAIK it covers the concepts expressed by a dozen different words in #japanese. I bet it is the same for other languages. My daughter told me that the Italian noun " #amore" has somehow twelve different words in #ancientgreek: romantic, erotic, friendly, paternal, maternal and so on. Each a different word

How can we better understand the ancient Greek 'mind' 🏛️ ? Is it through translations? How can LLMs help 🤖 ? Felix Maier and I from the University of Zurich will present preliminary findings on that at #CHR2025 in beautiful #Luxembourg. So... I kinda went down a rabbit hole trying to make an old "dat ass" meme, but for "dat glass" instead. The original post on tumblr is about what would happen if you showed someone in ancient Greece a yankee candle (well, how much it would sell for). Presumably, they wouldn't be too confused/impressed by scented and colored wax being burned. They wouldn't even be all that interested in tinted/colored glass. BUT, they WOULD be interested in CLEAR glass (because apparently that tech is much newer). Hence, a "dat glass" admiration meme was born.
But me, being foolish, decided, not knowing a lick of ancient Greek, that it'd be funnier if the meme used ancient Greek too instead of English, to go along with the theme/reaction that someone in ancient Greece might have to seeing clear glass. Which eventually brought me to the following translation of "dat glass" into ancient Greek (which, again, I knew nothing of until about one hour ago):
ἡ ὕᾰλος ἐκείνη
I *think* “dat glass” would treat “dat” as a demonstrative adjective of the subject “glass,” meaning we’d have “dat” in the predicate position (ἐκείνη / that coming *after* the subject ὕᾰλος / glass [also assuming that this is the proper form of glass, a singular feminine mass noun in the nominative case]). Dunno if the ἡ bit is required or not, but kinda feels like it is if a cursory glance at example sentences is any indication?
Basically... how far off am I in faithfully translating "dat glass", in this context, into ancient Greek?

A lot of this time has been dedicated to "hurrying up and waiting," and so I have had some time to sit here and think.
And I came up with silly personalized nerd names for all my email box, task, calendar, etc. labels!! 😻
I will only share a few, out of respect for your time:
☸️ Ellimenory
💠 This is the name for the category label that holds all of my various email boxes in one place
💠 Etymology: Elli- (me!) + limen (Gk. λιμήν, "harbor," "port") + -ory (Lat. -orium, "place for")☸️ Ellisallagment
💠 Meaning: These are financial tasks, obligations, dates, or communications. Anything related with financial or money matters.
💠 Etymology: Elli- (me!) + allagē (Gk. ἀλλαγή, "exchange," "barter") + -ment (Lat. -mentum, "result," "act of")☸️ Ellisbibliphiloca
💠 Meaning: The category label for the list of books I own that were authored and/or published by personal friends.
💠 Etymology: Ellis- (me!) + biblíon (Gk. βιβλίον, "book") + philía (Gk. φιλία, "friendship") + -ca (Gk. thēkē, "receptacle")☸️ Ellisbiblisaureca
💠 Meaning: My "treasure" archive of books to read and of things to do and to explore. Someone found it interesting that I choose to treasure the unknown rather than attaching this word to books I'd already read and known that I liked. I just said, "Why would I hold onto a future responsibility I didn't treasure enough to make the burden worth it?"
💠 Etymology: Ellis- (me!) + biblíon (Gk. βιβλίον, "book") + thēsauros (Gk. θησαυρός, "treasure," "storehouse") + -ca (Gk. thēkē, "receptacle")☸️ Ellistheronomy
💠 Meaning: All tasks and calendar events and communications directly related to my personal physical and mental health.
💠 Etymology: Elli- (me!) + therapeía (Gk. θεραπεία, "healing," "care," "service") + -nomy (Gk. νομία, "system of laws," "management")☸️ Ellithekium
💠 Meaning: My savings account. 😺
💠 Etymology: Elli- (me!) + thek (Gk. , "case," "box," "chest," "receptacle") + -ium (Lat. -ium, "a place for")☸️ Ellymiktry
💠 Meaning: The box that holds "All the Other Things™."
💠 Etymology: Elli- (me!) + mikta (Gk. μικτά, "mixed things," from sýmmikta) + -ry (Eng. "place of," "practice of")That's not even a quarter of them all. Dear gods, please tell me it isn't just me? 😅💙♾️

I got some replica ancient Greek coins in for use with tabletop gaming. I got 5 made in Italy (Left) and 5 made in China (Right). The Italian made ones do feel more authentic, but both are pretty good.
