🧲 Bronze Age Greeks wore rings made from IRON THAT FELL FROM SPACE

Researchers tested 91 ancient iron objects from elite tombs in Greece and Crete using X-ray fluorescence. Most were ordinary smelted iron. But 10 signet rings contained high nickel levels - a telltale sign of meteoritic iron, which can contain up to 50% nickel.

The rings were found in tholos and chamber tombs alongside gold vessels, amber jewelry, and carved seals. Metalworkers often layered the meteoric iron with gold, silver, or bronze, marking it as a prestige material reserved for Minoan and Mycenaean elites.

The raw iron was likely imported from Egypt, where desert conditions preserve meteorites. (King Tut's tomb also contained a meteoric iron dagger.) The space-iron ring fashion vanished around the 12th century BCE - right when the Late Bronze Age collapse brought down these civilizations.

Athletic events at the #Panathenaia were held in three age categories: boys from 12-16 years of age, ephebes / youths of 16-20 years and men over 20. Today, on day 3 of the Panathenaia, the athletic competitions for the men would have been held. This year is a year of the "Lesser Panathenaia" or Panathenaia ta Mikra, so I am not certain how long the Games were during the Lesser Panathenaia. Since it's still a 7 day event, maybe the competitors were just from Athens?
