  2. One lesson I still remember from junior high school 📚

The ancient Greeks and Romans often showed two different sides of warfare and strategy .

The Greeks are remembered for using intelligence and strategy to overcome stronger or better-equipped enemies, proving that brains can defeat brute force .

While the Romans became famous for discipline, organization, and overwhelming numbers, building powerful legions that could outlast many opponents .

One side is often seen as outsmarting the other as outnumbering and overpowering.

But both left a lesson that still stands today:
Strategy and structure can both change history. 🌍

  9. So, the last movie hubby and I (and our shared bestie) saw in a theatre was #Dune. I think we need to see #TheOdyssey on the big screen. I mean, #Circe, Penelope, #Telemachus #Oikos ("homecoming" not the yogurt)?! This looks like it covers most of the important stuff!

  13. ✨Dionysus and Spes (Maybe)✨

Dionysus is dressed in his panther-skin best and wears a garland to boot. He’s joined by a smaller figure more archaic in style which is thought to represent Spes, the personification of hope. But maybe that’s more HOPEFUL thinking since one of stops on the journey of provenance was as part of the Hope collection. Either way, this beautiful sculpture also considered to be a Roman reimagining of a Greek bronze from the fourth century BCE.

  15. ✨Venus, House of Venus - Pompeii✨

What a way to celebrate Friday with this gorgeous depiction of Venus. She appears to glide across the sea as she reclines in a shell. She is accompanied by a nereid riding a dolphin and Cupid shyly hanging back behind the shell.

  16. ✨Pentheus being torn apart by maenads✨

Euripides ‘The Bacchae’ tells the unfortunate tale of Pentheus, the king of Thebes, who banned the worship of Dionysius. This provoked the wrath of the god and led to the women of Thebes breaking out into a Bachhic frenzy. Pentheus was ripped limb from limb. His death was viewed as a sparagmos, where tearing an animal (or human) apart was viewed as a special type of sacrifice. This fresco from the triclinium in the House of the Vettii in Pompeii, seems to run counter to today’s notions of good taste…

  18. ✨Cyrene ✨

This #MosaicMonday we celebrate the princess Cyrene who leant her name to the Greek colony in Libya. In myth she is known as the daughter of Hypseus, king of the Lapiths and the Naiad Chlidanope. Her sons by Apollo were Aristaeus and Idmon. Aristaeus sounds like the kind of god we’d love to met as he was the god of animal husbandry, bee-keeping and cheese making. Idmon became a famed seer. Cyrene herself was famous as a huntress, and reputedly called ‘lionkiller’, and was at times a companion of Artemis.

  21. 🏛️⚙️ Long before digital projectors, Hero of Alexandria used a sophisticated system of weights and pulleys to create a programmable, moving theater. The 1st-century engineer’s "automatic stage" featured moving characters and changing scenes.

  22. #Alkibiades and #Sokrates by @[email protected]

Alkibiades was so hot that he defected from Athens to Sparta, then from Sparta to Persia, and was still taken back by Athens. He is said to have been in love with #Socrates, whose looks were described as resembling a satyr, something Kebriones captures well in their drawing.

  23. ✨A centaur and a young man✨

This scene is very reminiscent of another fresco of Chiron educating Achilles. The role of the centaur as teacher and guide to learning the arts and cultivating wisdom draws a connection between the epics of Homer and Pompeii where this fresco was found in the so-called Villa of Cicero. The piece is now held by the MAN Napoli.
