Μερικές σκέψεις για την Οδύσσεια του Nolan.
Τώρα λοιπόν που η διαφημιστική καμπάνια της Οδύσσειας του Nolan έχει σχεδόν ολοκληρωθεί και οι συζητήσεις για το έργο αρχίζουν να γίνονται παρωχημένες, εγώ βρήκα λίγο χρόνο για να γράψω δυο σκέψεις.
Το πλέον πολυσυζητημένο ζήτημα είναι η επιλογή μίας Μαύρης ηθοποιού, της Lupita Nyong'o για το ρόλο της Ωραίας Ελένης, αν και τελικά αυτή η συζήτηση συμπυκνώνει ένα μεγαλύτερο θέμα, το κατά πόσο το κοινό έχει τη διάθεση να δεχτεί τον έντονο woke χαρακτήρα που διακατέχει όλη την ταινία. Δυστυχώς, στο δημόσιο διάλογο αυτή η σκηνοθετική επιλογή εγκλωβίστηκε σε ένα δίπολο μεταξύ ακροδεξιών από την μία, και (κυρίως κεντροαριστερών) δικαιωματιστών από την άλλη, ενώ τα επιχειρήματα που βρίσκονταν εκτός του δίπολου ελάχιστα ακούστηκαν. Η αντικειμενικά προκλητική κίνηση του Nolan να προβάλει μία Μαύρη Ωραία Ελένη ενεργοποίησε τον κάθε ρατσιστή και το internet γέμισε με μισαλλόδοξες ανοησίες. Απέναντι σε αυτόν τον εύκολα γελοιοποιήσιμο αντίπαλο στάθηκε πλήθος δικαιωματιστών όπου προς υπεράσπιση της δικής τους ατζέντας επιδίωξε να παρουσιάσει κάθε κριτική που δέχτηκε το casting ως ακροδεξιά. Είναι όμως έτσι;
Πόσο συμφωνούμε με τις αναρίθμητες Χολιγουντιανές ταινίες για σαμουράι, ιθαγενείς, και άλλες φυλές, όπου οι πρωταγωνιστές είναι Λευκοί Αμερικάνοι; Αλλά και πόσο θα συμφωνούσαμε αν βλέπαμε μία ταινία για Βίκινγκ με πρωταγωνιστές Μαύρους; Το πρόβλημα εδώ δεν είναι αποκλειστικά οι Μαύροι, αλλά η ψευδής προβολή της κοινωνίας ως πολυφυλετικής, αποτελούμενη επίσης από Ασιάτες, Ινδούς, Λατινοαμερικάνους, και Ευρωπαίους. Ενώ το Μεσογειακό στοιχείο είναι σχεδόν εξαφανισμένο.
Όταν κάνεις μία ταινία για ένα συγκεκριμένο λαό και μία συγκεκριμένη γεωγραφική περιοχή, ο μόνος τρόπος να σεβαστείς την εικόνα του ως προς την αναπαράστασή του στη μεγάλη οθόνη είναι μέσα από την υιοθέτηση των ιδιαίτερων χαρακτηριστικών του, έστω εν μέρει. Και οι Αχαιοί του τότε, δεν είχαν αυτά τα πολυφυλετικά χαρακτηριστικά.
Ο Nolan δεν κάνει ούτε την παραμικρή προσπάθεια για να φτιάξει μία ταινία που έστω να προσεγγίζει την ιστορική πραγματικότητα. Το τοπίο όπου διαδραματίζεται η ταινία είναι σκοτεινό (με μία εμμονική προσκόλληση στον πορτοκαλί φωτισμό για να δίνει ένταση), το σεξ έχει διαγραφεί ώστε το προϊόν να είναι family-friendly, τα κουστούμια δε θυμίζουν την ενδυμασία της εποχής (λευκές και μαύρες πανοπλίες δίχως χρηστική αξία για να τονιστεί η αντίθεση ανάμεσα σε καλό-κακό, για εικαστικούς λόγους η Αθηνά φοράει μαντίλι, κ.λπ.), και οι χορογραφημένες μαχητικές σκηνές δεν έχουν τίποτα το ρεαλιστικό (κατά την άλωση της Τροίας δε φόραγαν καν περικεφαλαίες). Η σύνθεση της κοινωνίας δεν έχει σχεδόν κανένα στοιχείο από Ελληνικές και Μεσογειακές φυλές, ενώ περιέχει ένα τρανς άτομο.
Αντιθέτως, επιδιώκεται η αναπαράσταση των κοινωνικών χαρακτηριστικών των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών του σήμερα. Μίας κοινωνίας με έντονες εσωτερικές αντιθέσεις (συμπεριλαμβανομένων των φυλετικών) που προσπαθεί να αποδείξει στον εαυτό της ότι οι αντιθέσεις της μπορούν να ξεπεραστούν ώστε ενωμένη και ισχυρή να διατηρήσει την παγκόσμια κυριαρχία.
Γίνεται εμφανές με τον πλέον εμβληματικό τρόπο, ότι το πολύκροτο “whitewashing” δεν εξαλείφθηκε καθόλου, αλλά μεταλλάχτηκε σε “usa-washing”. Καπηλεύεται πολιτισμικά στοιχεία ενός άλλου λαού, τον οποίο και εξοβελίζει από την αναπαράσταση στην οθόνη. Οι Αχαιοί μέσα από τον στρεβλό φακό του Hollywood απεκδύονται των ιδιαίτερων πολιτισμικών τους χαρακτηριστικών για να προσαρμοστούν στην προκρούστεια κλίνη των αμερικανικών προτύπων. Η Οδύσσεια του Nolan δεν είναι παρά άλλο ένα παράδειγμα πολιτισμικού ιμπεριαλισμού.
Επειδή η ταινία προορίζεται για το αμερικανικό κοινό, διακατέχεται παντού από επεξηγήσεις για το τι συμβαίνει και σε ποιο πλαίσιο διαδραματίζονται τα γεγονότα, μία συνθήκη που την καθιστά εύπεπτη. Χαρακτηριστική είναι η ατάκα του Οδυσσέα ότι «Η Εποχή μας του Χαλκού, καταρρέει» σα να γνώριζε ότι οι ιστορικοί του μέλλοντος θα ονόμαζαν εκείνη την περίοδο ως «Εποχή του Χαλκού». Πέρα όμως από το εμφανές γελοίο, πρέπει να διακρίνουμε ότι αυτή η φράση έχει μία αυξημένη βαρύτητα για το αμερικανικό κοινό όπου αισθάνεται την αυτοκρατορία των ΗΠΑ να καταρρέει κι επομένως ταυτίζεται.
Ακόμη, η ταινία διαδίδει ένα ξεκάθαρο αντιπολεμικό μήνυμα όταν ο πόλεμος ΗΠΑ-Ιράν βρίσκεται στο αποκορύφωμά του, ο συγχρονισμός αυτών των γεγονότων πολλαπλασιάζει την επιρροή της ταινίας αν κι ενδεχομένως να προέκυψε τυχαία. Το αμερικανικό κοινό παραλληλίζεται με τους Έλληνες όπου προβάλλονται ως οι «κακοί» που αρχίζουν έναν επιθετικό πόλεμο, με αποτέλεσμα να ενεργοποιούνται συναισθήματα ενοχής αντίστοιχα με αυτά που αναπτύσσει ο πρωταγωνιστής. Η φράση «προσευχηθείτε για συγχώρεση» όπου απευθύνεται στους συντρόφους του Οδυσσέα είναι και πάλι εκτός τόπου και χρόνου καθώς η αντίληψη ότι ο θεός λυπάται και συγχωρεί τους μετανοημένους είναι χριστιανική. Και πάλι όμως αν δεν προσκολληθούμε στην ιστορική αστοχία, μπορούμε να διακρίνουμε την προσπάθεια να δημιουργηθούν σημεία ταύτισης του σύγχρονου θρησκευόμενου κοινού με τους Αχαιούς. Το συναίσθημα της ενοχής που αναδύεται στο κοινό, φανερώνει έναν λαό που έχει επίγνωση των «αμαρτιών» του κι ελπίζει ότι θα συγχωρεθεί για τα βαμμένα με αίμα χέρια του.
Συνολικά, μπορώ να διακρίνω ότι στην Οδύσσεια του Nolan υπήρξε μία τίμια προσπάθεια να αγγιχθούν ορισμένες ευαίσθητες χορδές του αμερικάνικου κοινού, ωστόσο αυτή η προσπάθεια δεν αρκεί για να σώσει την ταινία. Στον πυρήνα της βρίσκεται η πολιτισμική προπαγάνδα μίας αυτοκρατορίας που αφού σε κυριεύσει με βία (είτε φυσική, είτε οικονομική), μετά θα προσπαθήσει να σε πείσει ότι σε «ανέχεται» γιατί είναι «συμπεριληπτική». Ο δυτικός δικαιωματισμός δεν είναι παρά το ξέπλυμα ενός αιματοβαμμένου επεκτατισμού.

Pyrrho of Elis: The Philosopher Who Found Peace in Doubt
The Traveler Who Questioned Certainty Born around 360 BCE in Elis, Greece, Pyrrho stands as the founder of Ancient Skepticism, a radical philosophical tradition that challenges the very possibility of certain knowledge. His life took a dramatic turn when he accompanied Alexander the Great on his expedition to India. There, he encountered the gymnosophists ("naked wise men"), likely early Buddhist monks. This cross-cultural encounter profoundly transformed his thinking. He synthesized Eastern insights—particularly the Buddhist "Three Marks of Existence" (impermanence, suffering, and no-self)—with Greek philosophical rigor, creating a unique path focused not on discovering truth, but on suspending judgment to achieve peace.
Radical Skepticism: "We Know Nothing" Pyrrho’s core assertion was startlingly simple yet devastatingly deep: "We are so constituted that we know nothing." He argued that our senses and opinions reveal neither objective truth nor definitive falsehood. For every argument, there is an equally convincing counter-argument (isosthenia). Whether discussing the nature of the gods, the existence of the self, or the principles of morality, human reason cannot definitively settle the question.
This isn't cynicism or a claim that reality doesn't exist. It's a recognition of the gap between our experience and the world-in-itself. Because we cannot bridge this gap with absolute certainty, Pyrrho proposed a revolutionary response: Epoché—the disciplined suspension of judgment. Instead of committing to "this is true" or "that is false," the skeptic holds beliefs lightly, refusing to be dogmatic.
Ataraxia: The Goal of Liberation Why suspend judgment? To achieve Ataraxia (tranquility, freedom from disturbance). Pyrrho observed that much of human suffering stems from the anxiety of needing to be right, the fear of being wrong, and the mental exhaustion of defending rigid certainties in an uncertain world.
The Cure: By letting go of the need for absolute certainty, one frees oneself from the turbulence of dogmatic belief.
Not Withdrawal: This is not nihilism or disengagement. Pyrrho lived a full civic life, served as a magistrate, and participated in society. He simply did so without the burden of claiming ultimate truth. He acted according to appearances, customs, and practical necessity, but without the psychological weight of dogma.
Key Practices: A Way of Life Pyrrhonism is a practical philosophy of life, not just abstract theory. Its toolkit includes:
Epoché: Suspending judgment on all matters, refusing to commit to any position as definitively true.
Acatalepsy: Recognizing that certain knowledge is ultimately unattainable; we cannot "grasp" truth with absolute confidence.
Aporia: Embracing puzzlement and doubt as natural, desirable states that keep inquiry alive, rather than problems to be solved.
Adiaphora: Regarding things as indifferent—neither inherently good nor bad, true nor false—freeing ourselves from attachment to outcomes or beliefs.
Legacy: From Antiquity to the Digital Age Though Pyrrho wrote nothing himself, his teachings were preserved by followers like Timon and later systematized by Sextus Empiricus (c. 200 CE). Pyrrhonism resurfaced powerfully during the Renaissance (influencing Montaigne) and the Enlightenment (shaping David Hume). Today, in an era of information overload, competing narratives, and polarized discourse, Pyrrho’s wisdom feels prophetic.
Intellectual Humility: Holding beliefs lightly allows for genuine engagement across differences.
Mental Tranquility: Accepting the limits of knowledge frees us from the anxiety of uncertainty.
Critical Thinking: Rigorous examination of arguments without descending into cynicism or paralysis.
Pyrrho offers a timeless guide: True wisdom lies not in having all the answers, but in being comfortable with the questions. In a world drowning in competing certainties, the peace found in doubt may be the most radical liberation of all.

Pythagoras: The Man, The Myth, The Mathematician
Pythagoras (c. 570–495 BCE) is one of history's most enigmatic figures. We know him for a² + b² = c², but his legacy is far stranger: a fusion of rigorous mathematics, religious mysticism, and political revolution. He didn't just discover a formula; he proposed that mathematics is the language of reality itself.
The Journey of Wisdom
Born on the island of Samos, Pythagoras didn't stay put. He traveled to Egypt and Babylon, absorbing geometry from priests and astronomy from scholars. He synthesized these traditions into a radical idea: Numbers are universal. They don't change based on culture or gods. This insight birthed the concept of universal truth accessible through reason—the foundation of science.
The Pythagorean School
In Croton (Southern Italy), he founded a community that was part university, part monastery.
Radical Inclusivity: He accepted women as students (like Theano and Damo), believing intellect transcended gender.
Communal Life: Members shared possessions, lived together, and followed strict dietary rules (famously avoiding beans—reasons vary from soul-transmigration to flatulence).
Secret Knowledge: An inner circle (mathematikoi) mastered advanced proofs, while outsiders (akousmatikoi) listened in silence.
The Mathematical Revolution
Proof over Observation: While Babylonians knew the theorem, Pythagoras provided the first logical proof. This shifted math from practical measurement to eternal certainty.
Music & Math: He discovered that musical harmony follows simple ratios (2:1 for octaves, 3:2 for fifths). This proved that beauty has a mathematical structure.
Irrational Numbers: His own followers discovered √2 cannot be expressed as a fraction. Legend says they drowned the discoverer (Hippasus) because it shattered their worldview that "all is number." Yet, the math survived.
Mysticism & The Soul
Pythagoras was also a mystic. He taught metempsychosis (reincarnation), believing souls cycle through animals and humans. This led to vegetarianism and a deep reverence for all life. He saw the Tetractys (a triangle of 10 dots) as a sacred symbol of cosmic order. To him, math wasn't cold calculation—it was theology.
The Fall & The Legacy
His political influence in Croton sparked a violent backlash around 510 BCE. The school was burned, members killed, and Pythagoras fled to Metapontum, dying in exile. But his ideas survived.
Plato absorbed Pythagorean math and mysticism.
Euclid codified the method of proof.
Modern Science rests on the Pythagorean assumption that the universe is rational and mathematical.
Why He Matters Today
Pythagoras reminds us that truth is discoverable. Whether in GPS navigation (using his theorem), cryptography (using number theory), or music production (using harmonic ratios), his vision persists. He showed that the universe isn't chaos—it's a symphony of numbers waiting to be understood.

Euripides ‘The Bacchae’ tells the unfortunate tale of Pentheus, the king of Thebes, who banned the worship of Dionysius. This provoked the wrath of the god and led to the women of Thebes breaking out into a Bachhic frenzy. Pentheus was ripped limb from limb. His death was viewed as a sparagmos, where tearing an animal (or human) apart was viewed as a special type of sacrifice. This fresco from the triclinium in the House of the Vettii in Pompeii, seems to run counter to today’s notions of good taste…

The role of the centaur as teacher and guide to learning the arts and cultivating wisdom draws a connection between the epics of Homer and Pompeii where this fresco was found in the so-called Villa of Cicero. The piece is now held by the MAN Napoli.

Unfortunately for siblings, Phrixus and Helle, they were hated by their stepmother, Ino. She succeeded in creating a famine and bribing men to lie to a local oracle in an attempt to convince others that the oracle required the sacrifice of both Phrixus and Helle. Luckily after all this chaos, Nephele, their natural mother was able to intervene to save her children. A ram with a fleece of golden wool swooped in to provide them with a means of escape!

First, by drawing up a moral landscape of her shameful deeds, Cicero seeks to emphasise the magnitude of her guilt [as an adulteress and murderer of her husband]. Second, built spaces are important for Cicero's argument because they allow him to ‘reveal’ Clodia's private acts, that is, acts that occurred in private spaces, to his male audience in a public space in a dramatic way, thus offering entertainment and creating outrage. Finally, Cicero is able to present her acts as shameful and problematic by blurring built spaces with gendered social spaces.
"This last aspect of his use of space is particularly complex and perfidious and made possible not least by the fluidity of the spatial concepts at work in a #domus and other ‘private’ places, such as gardens and provincial villas. Take the Roman domus: Cicero could use several levels of meaning in this term. A Roman domus was a physical location with a strong symbolic value. It was considered to be the seat of a family, to the point that the term could be equated with the family itself. And, as the family stood at the heart of the Roman moral order, the domus also had a strong #moral connotation The Roman house was, further, a political and hence a public site: it was used to conduct political business, to make connections and to present the public image of the house's owner. It is likely that Clodia received her guests in the atrium, the centre of the public part of the domus, or in an adjacent room (cubiculum) more suitable for private business, but it is difficult to map these roles onto specific areas within the Roman domus. Roman houses were not divided into a ‘public’ and a ‘non-public’ area: some areas were clearly intended for interaction with people outside the household, such as members of the public, guests or supplicants, while other parts were reserved for the life of the family and the business of the household, but there was no clear dichotomy, the separation of these spaces being fluid, with gradations of privacy.
"It is this fluidity that allows Cicero uses spatial references to make Clodia scandalous. For it allows him blur the division between built spaces used by women and conceptual or social spaces, notably politics, that were reserved for men. In this way, Cicero is able to construct Clodia's social events as #transgressions into #MaleSocialSpace. How is this achieved? Having ascribed each of her acts to a specific space as noted above, he turned events that (if they happened at all) would otherwise have been accessible to at most a few people – the goings-on inside Clodia's house (domus) in Rome, in her private garden by the Tiber or at her country house at Baiae – into the public object of the trial of Caelius. In so doing, Cicero accused her of having used these built spaces in a manner that had infringed on social spaces that were unsuitable for respectful women, because they were, so he insinuated, reserved for men. It is the infringement of these #gendered social spaces that constitute her worst transgression according to Cicero."

published on 18 January 2012"The #RitesOfEleusis, or the Eleusinian Mysteries, were the secret rituals of the mystery school of #Eleusis and were observed regularly from c. 1600 BCE - 392 CE. Exactly what this mystic ritual was no one knows; but why the ancient Greeks participated in it can be understood by the testimonials of the initiated.
"The Eleusinian Mysteries, held each year at Eleusis, Greece, fourteen miles northwest of Athens, were so important to the Greeks that, until the arrival of the Romans, The Sacred Way (the road from Athens to Eleusis) was the only road, not a goat path, in all of central Greece. The mysteries celebrated the story of Demeter and #Persephone but, as the initiated were sworn to secrecy on pain of death as to the details of the ritual, we do not know what form these rituals took. We do know, though, that those who participated in the mysteries were forever changed for the better and that they no longer feared death.
"The rituals were based on a symbolic reading of the story of Demeter and Persephone and provided initiates with a vision of the afterlife so powerful that it changed the way they saw the world and their place in it. Participants were freed from a fear of death through the recognition that they were immortal souls temporarily in mortal bodies. In the same way that Persephone went down to the land of the dead and returned to that of the living each year, so would every human being die only to live again on another plane of existence or in another body."
