🩵 Delightful Diana 🩵
This gorgeous fresco is from the Villa Arianna in ancient Stabiae. Diana holds a bow and arrow with billowing fabric out behind her. The yellow tones of her clothing are a striking accompaniment to the vibrant blue background.

✨Women and Literacy✨
While the extent written evidence from women in ancient Rome is small, it is suggestive of a culture of education particularly among elite families.
This Pompeian fresco depicts Terentius Neo and his (name unknown) wife. She holds a stylus and writing tablet while he holds a scroll. The literacy of both is openly suggested in this double portrait.

This fresco detail includes a swallow (happy to stand corrected by folk with more bird knowledge!) and comes from the garden painting from the House of the Golden Bracelet, Pompeii.

This is part of the recently uncovered House of Thiasos at Pompeii which is covered in sprawling and near life sized portraits of followers of Dionysus including Silenus (seen here with a young lady). But it seems that the veneration of Dionysus would be incomplete indeed without some fine marine creatures!

For a belated #SaveTheElephantDay 🐘 on a #FrescoFriday: love the cheeky expression on this elephant’s face! A lovely surviving detail from the murals of Ellora Cave 16, aka the Kailāśa Temple in Maharashtra, India. This Hindu cave temple, carved from a single massive rock in the 8th century, is the largest monolithic structure in the world.

This fresco depicts a riot at the arena in Pompeii. The fresco likely depicts the riot that broke out in 59 CE between Pompeians and the neighbouring Nucerians. When news of the riots reached Rome, the emperor Nero banned events at the arena for a decade! Today this fresco can be seen at the MAN Napoli.

What a way to celebrate Friday with this gorgeous depiction of Venus. She appears to glide across the sea as she reclines in a shell. She is accompanied by a nereid riding a dolphin and Cupid shyly hanging back behind the shell.

Euripides ‘The Bacchae’ tells the unfortunate tale of Pentheus, the king of Thebes, who banned the worship of Dionysius. This provoked the wrath of the god and led to the women of Thebes breaking out into a Bachhic frenzy. Pentheus was ripped limb from limb. His death was viewed as a sparagmos, where tearing an animal (or human) apart was viewed as a special type of sacrifice. This fresco from the triclinium in the House of the Vettii in Pompeii, seems to run counter to today’s notions of good taste…

This scene is very reminiscent of another fresco of Chiron educating Achilles. The role of the centaur as teacher and guide to learning the arts and cultivating wisdom draws a connection between the epics of Homer and Pompeii where this fresco was found in the so-called Villa of Cicero. The piece is now held by the MAN Napoli.

To atone for the murder of the Argonaut Iphitus, Hercules is required to spend a year in servitude under the Lydian princess Omphale. During this year, Hercules is sometimes lampooned as having to dress as a woman as he is seen in this fresco and to play whatever role Omphale saw as fit for him.

We’re getting into the weekend early spirit by celebrating this lovely lady. With just a bit of stray drapery and instrument in hand, she looks relaxed and content, which is just what we wish for everyone these days.

✨The tragic but hopeful tale of Phrixus and Helle✨
Unfortunately for siblings, Phrixus and Helle, they were hated by their stepmother, Ino. She succeeded in creating a famine and bribing men to lie to a local oracle in an attempt to convince others that the oracle required the sacrifice of both Phrixus and Helle. Luckily after all this chaos, Nephele, their natural mother was able to intervene to save her children. A ram with a fleece of golden wool swooped in to provide them with a means of escape!

This brilliantly coloured fresco is part of a series preserved on a pillar from the Fullonica Veranius Hypsaeus in Pompeii. The workers are putting out cloth for drying. Today this piece can be seen in the MAN Napoli (inv. 9974).
