In the story of Cupid and Psyche by Roman Numidian writer Apuleius, Psyche uses honeyed barley cakes to feed Cerberus, the three-headed guard dog of the underworld, to get past him in order to fetch a dose of beauty from Proserpina, the Queen of the Underworld. Descending to the underworld for Proserpina's beauty is the last trial given to Psyche by her angry mother-in-law Venus.
