September... Zur Erinnerung: Die Römer zählten (und bezeichneten) die Tage immer in Bezug auf bestimmte Fixtage (Kalenden, Nonen, Iden).

Sydney feels like it’s jumped straight from winter to summer these last few days, but really it’s Spring in the air.
This fresco fragment is often identified as the goddess Flora and was found in the Villa of Ariadne in Stabiae. Now held in the MAN Napoli.

✨New Episode - Etruscan Evil Plans✨
What is Rome to do when they gaze out from the Capitol and all they can see are the neighbours they don’t like or the neighbours that don’t like them?

The Romans found a dangerously effective way to sweeten wine.
Concentrated grape must was sometimes boiled in lead vessels. The acidic must could react with the metal and form lead acetate — the notorious “sugar of lead.” Sweet on the tongue, toxic over time.

What am I reading?
¾ through Ancient Roman by Simon Baker and enjoying it thoroughly. Perhaps it's my own ignorance of the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, but I have been surprised at how similar current power dynamics match those of Rome in the first century AD and before. I've got Prince Orange 🍊 down as Nero and his sycophants as the aristocratic elites in the Roman Senate: clueless & self serving!
I recommend the Heythwaite Trilogy, a Yorkshire saga by Annie Eileen Rogers, as some easy reading if you have just put down a heavy read, like Ancient Rome!
