Originally McGuinn's vision was for a "history of American music" Parsons passion for country music pressured McGuinn that a country album would be the direction. Even going further that the album should be recorded in Nashville as Dylan had done with "Blond on Blond". When the Byrd's producer Gary Usher agreed they should go to Nashville McGuinn was convinced. On March 9, 1968, the band decamped to Columbia's recording facility in Nashville, with Clarence White in tow, to begin recording sessions for "Sweetheart of the Rodeo".
A commercial flop when released, today the album is revered as a cornerstone of Country music and the launching pad for Gram Parsons.
