@lightweight Just out of curiosity, have you checked out Wafrn?

One thing that gives it an edge over other fediverse server software is an ATProto 'sidecar'. Which enables a PDA for each account that opts in, making their posts and replies visible in the ATmosphere. I presume ATProto accounts can be followed without bridging too, but I've only just started testing.

@panos I'm still on #tumblr and... maybe? I'm assuming this would be an inline expansion, rather than jumping to some other page/view/modal with the whole chain/thread (which masto already does). On Mastodon, I often find myself boosting every node in a thread when I find the whole thread interesting because I want to signal to folks "hey, this thread is interesting"; on tumblr, the whole thread (well, all of its antecedent nodes anyway) effectively *is*/*becomes* a node when you reblog it, showing it all in one. I guess "quote boosting/posting/replying" might already be that advertisement, but... I've always seen quoting as "i want folks to see what I'm replying to without needing to click through" rather than "check this thread out".

i dunno. UI/UX is harder than it seems. 🤷

Calling any Tumblr users - there was a topic on Reddit where someone was complaining that you can't reblog whole conversations on fedi. I have not used Tumblr so I don't have direct experience with the feature, but would a button that expands the full conversation above a repost or a quoted post (or any post with ancestors actually) be something that you might find useful?

I'm conscious that I've been fairly quiet recently, not posting much. I've had some travelling to do and family to take care of and that's taken a lot out of me. I've also been unfaithful to Mastodon - I have a Tumblr account which is quite a bit of fun.

HCMC Transforms into Vietnam’s Shopping Hotspot

When it comes to touring Southeast Asia, which particularly city do you think is ideal for shopping? In recent times, a booming fashion scene backed with strong social media exposure and promotions is turning Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam as a major shopping hotspot and the shopping craze there is only intensifying, according to an article by VnExpress.

Ho Chi Minh City is quickly becoming a shopping hotspot, thanks to a booming fashion scene that has been promoted widely on TikTok and Instagram as both affordable and accessible.

Chloe, a 22-year-old traveler from Australia, arrived on Tran Quang Dieu Street at the end of September with an empty suitcase and spent nearly US$800 in a single afternoon on clothes.

She planned to stay in Vietnam for a few weeks before returning home, saying: “I was inspired by a TikToker who came here with an empty suitcase just to fill it by shopping here.”

“The clothing quality is incredible, and everything is so cheap it feels surreal. It is like paradise for me.”

Recently, Ho Chi Minh City earned a spot among the 50 most attractive shopping destinations globally in a ranking by Travel and Tour World, a leading Indian travel publication.

The city is an ideal destination for travelers seeking handcrafted goods, textiles, and Vietnamese-style fashion, the report said.

Chloe is far from the only tourist visiting just for shopping.

Jasmine, a 26-year-old from Malaysia, says she travels to Vietnam specifically to buy clothes worn by her favorite idols.

“I am a huge K-pop fan, and I think Vietnamese clothing not only makes it easy to connect with my idols, but walking the fashion streets here also makes me feel amazing.”

She says she discovers brands and shopping locations primarily through Instagram, adding, “Every time I try on something here, I know I can afford it.”

Tina Yong, a prominent content creator with nearly four million followers, whose viral “Vietnam Haul” videos have helped put the local scene on the global map, points out that the appeal lies in discovery.

“People love discovering a brand they haven’t seen everywhere already.

“The designs are what catch my eye first, but the quality is what makes me go back.”

Other visitors echo this sentiment.

A visitor from Singapore says Vietnamese clothing craftsmanship is remarkable. She says she can buy about 10 times as many trendy items in Ho Chi Minh City, and for a fraction of the cost back home.

According to U.K. magazine Conde Nast Traveller, Vietnamese retail stands out for its high-quality craftsmanship and use of the same production lines as global brands like Nike and GAP at a cost that is a fraction of western retail prices.

The rise in foreign shopper numbers has changed how local boutique owners run their stores.

Nguyen Huu Hoang, 22, consultant for a shop on Le Van Sy, a famous retail street in HCMC, says foreigners make up 80-90% of his shop’s clientele, most of them walk-in customers.

To reach them, his brands focus on Instagram, posting regular “fit-check” videos to turn online views into real store visits.

The rule against “positive talk” about J.K. Rowling—including fanfiction—is internally consistent with Wafrn’s founding ethos, but its sweeping interpretation risks undermining the very kind of community Wafrn was built to be.

Wafrn’s original goals: a safer, Tumblr-shaped home

Wafrn did not set out to be a neutral or “anything goes” platform. Its founding identity is explicit and political:

• “No alt-right, no nazis, no terfs.” This is stated directly in the project’s own description.
• The developer’s own three rules are equally blunt: “1st no nazi shit 2nd no terf shit”.
• The name itself is a joke with a point. “Wafrn” stands for “We Allow Female Representing Nipples,” a direct reference to Tumblr’s 2018 porn ban.

So the goal was never to recreate Tumblr as it is, but to build a Tumblr-like space that is actively hostile to the ideologies that make Tumblr unsafe for trans people. The admin’s warning about JKR is not a sudden departure from that mission; it is a direct enforcement of the “no terf shit” principle. The admin even framed the ban in existential terms: “you are financially helping with the fucking trans genocide”.

Why build Wafrn when Tumblr exists?

The short answer: because Tumblr, from Wafrn’s perspective, is part of the problem.

• Tumblr is a corporation that banned adult content and, in Wafrn’s view, tolerates or platformed TERF ideology. Wafrn’s name is a protest against that moderation choice.
• Tumblr is not federated. Wafrn’s core technical selling point is that it connects natively to both the Fediverse (Mastodon, etc.) and Bluesky, letting users curate a cross-platform social graph without being trapped in one corporate silo.
• Wafrn promises a “caring and inviting place” with manual, volunteer moderation, not algorithmic or corporate enforcement.

The founding bet was that people who miss Tumblr’s energy also want a space where the baseline social contract is “trans people are not up for debate.” The JKR rule is the logical enforcement of that contract.

Does the action get them closer to the goal—or further away?

This is where it gets messy.

On one hand, it is aligned: If the stated goal is a space where TERF ideology and its most famous standard-bearer are not treated as normal or positive, then allowing enthusiastic posts about her work—even fanfiction—does send a mixed signal. The admin’s logic is that “positive light on her creations” is functionally positive light on her, and therefore violates the community’s foundational boundary.

On the other hand, the action risks betraying the goal in two ways:

1. It collapses “harm” into “association.” The rule does not target harassment of trans users or promotion of JKR’s politics; it targets enjoyment of a text. That is a much broader net than “no terf shit,” and it can feel like thought-policing rather than harm reduction. The admin’s own community has already been criticized as “an echo chamber” precisely because of this ban. An echo chamber is not a “caring and inviting place” for everyone; it is a place where the price of admission is agreeing with the moderation’s cultural tastes.

2. It contradicts the “chaotic Tumblr energy” pitch. Wafrn is marketed to people who miss Tumblr’s messy, self-curated, non-corporate weirdness. But the JKR rule replaces Tumblr’s corporate ban with a communal ban that is just as absolute, just as unwilling to discuss, and arguably more personal. The admin’s tone—“Go fuck yourselves” toward critics—is not the tone of a platform trying to build a big tent; it is the tone of a platform that has decided the tent is smaller and purer.

The verdict: The rule makes sense if you accept that Wafrn’s core product is not “Tumblr but federated” but “a federated space with a hard anti-TERF boundary.” Under that definition, the JKR ban is a consistent, if blunt, enforcement. But the way it is enforced—sweeping fanfiction into the ban and refusing discussion—moves Wafrn away from the “fun, chaotic, caring” community it advertises and toward a smaller, ideologically policed enclave. That may be what the admin wants. It is just not the same thing as the Tumblr-shaped haven the project’s own branding promises.

when Wafrn can replicate the experience of logging in to tumblr on a weekday morning and your dash is unexpectedly bangin' with post after post after post of 😙🤌 good stuff, I will know my dream for fedi since roughly 2018 - a true tumblr workalike plus a big enough back catalog of posts to feed it - has been created.

I have UX thoughts on accomplishing this, I had a long discussion on my main with the Wafrn guy (sorry I forgot your handle even tho we are myoots I think) about the biggest one (tumblr-style reblog chain); and the other one involves making tumblr-style replies parse visually more like tumblr. and also we need schedule & queue features on complete parity with tumblr.

but anyway. I need to do another periodic search for aethetic posters and reblog curators since I'm one of those tumblrinas. we'll get to where I hope we're going, I believe it. and fedi will be made infinitely richer when we do.

Singapore Leads Southeast Asia in Tourism Development

Singapore emerged as the best among the economies of Southeast Asia in the 2026 Travel and Tourism Development Index of the World Economic Forum (WEF), according to a news report of VnExpress. Globally, Singapore ranked 13th in a field of 110 economies.

Singapore ranked 13th among 110 economies in the World Economic Forum’s 2026 Travel and Tourism Development Index, the highest position among ASEAN.

The city state scored 4.89 points, up 3.4 percentage points from 2024 in the biennial ranking released on Friday by the World Economic Forum, an international advocacy non-governmental organization and think tank based in Switzerland.

Indonesia ranked at 23rd, followed by Malaysia at 26th, Thailand at 38th, Vietnam at 52nd, the Philippines at 57th, and Laos at 75th.

The index measures factors and policies that enable sustainable and resilient development of tourism like business environment, safety and health conditions, price competitiveness, air transport infrastructure, ground and port infrastructure, tourist services and infrastructure, natural resources, and cultural resources.

Singapore received high scores in business environment, safety and security, travel policy and enabling conditions, and infrastructure and services.

Singapore, the second largest economy in Southeast Asia after Indonesia by nominal GDP, is known for its strict laws and low crime rates. It has earned (its) reputation as one of the safest countries in Asia.

The city-state is ramping up investment in large-scale tourism infrastructure as it seeks to strengthen its position as a leading travel and business hub in Asia.

The government announced a S$740 million (US$584 million) tourism funding package, more than twice the S$300 million allocated under the Tourism Development Fund in 2024, in May to strengthen industry resilience until 2040.

#1 Popcorn in Bed’s X-Men movie reaction videos – I enjoy watching the movie reaction videos posted by Popcorn in Bed. For the most part, Cassie and her sister Carly (who joined her many times in reaction videos) are pretty reactive to the movies they saw for the first time ever regardless of genre. Recently, I replayed watching their reaction videos of the live-action, X-Men movies (the main ones specifically) from 2000’s X-Men to 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse. Each X-Men reaction video of theirs is fun to watch and I noticed how Cassy and Carly discovered who the characters are, familiarized themselves with them, and still succeeded on following the stories even though there were so many characters in each film. #2 The Sherman Oaks Galleria today – You may not have visited the Sherman Oaks Galleria in California, but you might have seen it in films like Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Chopping Mall, Commando, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Indeed, the said shopping mall was used as a location in the movies and given the fact that a lot of shopping malls across America have closed down, revisiting the Sherman Oak Galleria’s legacy is both nostalgic and even educational. #3 Magic Johnson’s 1996 Comeback as a Lakers Player – Looking back at the career of Magic Johnson, the 1990s was a series of drastic changes about him. He quickly retired in 1991 because he had Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) but returned as a player in the 1992 NBA All-Star Game and represented the United States as a Dream Team members in the Barcelona Olympics. He retired again in 1992 as controversy and protests grew from players over his plan to rejoin the Los Angeles Lakers for the 1992-93 season. He came back to the NBA as Lakers head coach in 1994 winning 5 games and losing 11, and eventually stepped down. In 1996, he came back as a player for the Lakers taking a new role as a power forward. Magic Johnson’s presence on the basketball courts looked exciting on face value but there was a lot of tension behind the scenes and even division among the Lakers. #4 Eels to eat in Japan – I enjoy eating Unadon, the classic Japanese dish that has eel (unagi) grilled in the kabayaki way and served in a rice bowl. I had Unadon during my visits to Japan and in Japanese restaurants (both locally and overseas). Eels are truly popular in Japan. Even though supply constraints of live eels are felt by consumers and businesses, somehow the Japanese food joints found ways to secure enough of them and offer them to hungry customers in creative ways. #5 Retro World Expo 2026 – I always wanted to attend a retro gaming convention in America. I saw this video about Retro World Expo 2026 which took place in Connecticut and it was enjoyable to see. #6 You, Me and the Movies react to Resident Evil: Degeneration – If you are a fan of the Resident Evil games and movies, do you really enjoy watching the computer-generated Resident Evil movies? Back in 2008, the pure-CGI movie Resident Evil: Degeneration was released in cinemas and there was some excitement for it among RE enthusiasts as it had fan-favorite characters Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield. Not only that, RE fans who were disappointed with the Milla Jovovich-led live-action movies wanted to see RE movies that were more connected with the games they enjoyed. You, Me and the Movies recently posted their reaction video about Resident Evil: Degeneration and it is a must-watch.

#7 Deathmate and the 1990s comics revisited – As a long-time comic book reader, I personally witnessed the presence and impact of the Deathmate crossover comic books in 1993. The Deathmate comics published by Valiant were released on time while those from Image Comics really arrived late. Local comic book collectors near me had no excitement for Deathmate even though famous artists like Rob Liefeld, Jim Lee and Whilce Portacio participated in it in various degrees. The video below is very comprehensive with its focus on not just Deathmate but also the comic book speculator boom, the 1990s comics trends, the intrigue behind the scenes and more. Vietnam Declared Asia’s Leading Destination of 2026

With its booming tourism industry and the economic gains it has achieved so far, Vietnam was named as Asia’s leading destination during the 2026 World Travel Awards beating the likes of regional rivals Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, according to a VnExpress news report. In fact, this is not the first time Vietnam achieved this particular honor and there were other awards won as well.

Vietnam has been named Asia’s leading destination at this year’s World Travel Awards, adding another tourism accolade to the country’s growing reputation.

Indonesian Tourism Industry Earns $8.43 Billion in First Half of 2026

Indonesia, which attracted over fifteen million foreign tourists in 2025, saw its tourism industry earn $8.43 billion in the first half of 2026, according to a news article by VnExpress. The nation attracted 7.45 million foreign tourists in the same time period.

Indonesia’s tourism sector generated US$8.43 billion in foreign-exchange revenue in the first half of 2026, up 3% year-on-year, underscoring its growing contribution to the economy.

Deputy Tourism Minister Ni Luh Puspa said tourism remained an important driver of economic growth and a major source of foreign exchange for the country, Antara News Agency reported.

Last year, Indonesia, the largest economy in Southeast Asia, earned $18.27 billion in tourism-related foreign exchange.

The country received 7.45 million foreign visitors in the first half of 2026, up 5.71% from a year earlier and the highest January-June total since the Covid pandemic, Jakarta Globe reported.

It is targeting 16-17 million international tourist arrivals this year.

Virtua Fighter was their first 3D polygonal fighting game and it easily attracted attention as well as tons of money from arcade gamers and later console gamers. Virtua Fighter also sparked strong sales for the Sega Saturn console in Japan. Along the way, Sega itself got involved in anime productions with their ownership of TMS Entertainment and by the year 1995, the Virtua Fighter anime TV series was launched. To be clear, the Virtua Fighter anime series was not a simple production as the creators behind it made something cohesive as well as the characters worth following. #2 A look at the legacy of Reggie Lewis – When the late Reggie Lewis first entered the NBA as a rookie, the Celtics were still the best in the Eastern Conference and their famous starting five of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish, Dennis Johnson and Danny Ainge were aging. During his second season, Lewis improved heavily as he replaced the injured Larry Bird, and he went on to become a very productive Celtic over the next several years. Tragedy struck in 1993 when Lewis died at age 27 and the details behind his heart condition and death are complicated to say the least. What most people did not know was that Lewis entered the NBA to lift his family (note: his mother was a drug addict) up from poverty. #3 The Creepiest Episodes of Unsolved Mysteries – Recently, YouTuber Minty Comedic Arts posted a video about the ten creepiest episodes of Unsolved Mysteries (hosted by the late Robert Stack). In that video, I saw most of the creepy episodes featured and there were a few ones that I saw for the first time. Indeed, almost all the episodes of Unsolved Mysteries can be viewed for free on YouTube and there are some that were missing due to legal reasons. Now is the time to watch Minty’s video below. #4 American cheese in Japan – With the intensifying demand for cheese around the world, there is now a so-called battle for market share. In Japan, most cheese offered are imported and their prices have gone up significantly affecting the restaurants and local consumers. Along the way, cheese produced in the United States have entered Japan in growing numbers and it is being offered to local businesses and consumers for their consumption and cooking needs. #5 The Unreleased Marvel 2099 Video Game of the 1990s – Thirty years ago, I read a video game magazine and got excited over the news about an official video game based on the Marvel 2099 comics franchise. I already read lots of issues of Spider-Man 2099, X-Men 2099, Ravage 2099, Punisher 2099, Doom 2099, and the 2099 Unlimited quarterly series. That said, I was delightfully surprised that the Marvel 2099 game was set for release on PlayStation. Then as time passed by, nothing happened and the unreleased game was forgotten. In 1986, the low-budget techno-horror movie Chopping Mall (original title: Killbots) was released and it had a lot of scenes filmed inside the Sherman Oaks Galleria (which was also a location for Commando and Fast Times at Ridgemont High) in California. What makes Chopping Mall unique is its concept of security robots going rogue and harming people which brings back vibes of The Terminator. In today’s age of rampant artificial intelligence (AI) development, Chopping Mall has gotten more socially relevant and it has been featured in many movie reaction and retro review videos on YouTube.
