  1. CW: Bluesky, Fedi, and Community Building/Moderation

I'm still pretty upset that furries largely chose Bluesky over Fedi, and Bluesky's decision to start haphazardly banning babyfurs is the main reason why. Bluesky doesn't understand the intricacies of furries to moderate them, especially our various subcultures. The benefit of Mastodon et al. is that the servers are managed by people from your subculture.

A lot of my reservations about Bluesky being a Twitter 2.0 were hand-waved away because ATProto (the protocol Bluesky is built on) is federated like ActivityPub (the protocol the Fediverse/Mastodon is built on). ATProto is federated, yes, but it's not a protocol that promotes community-building like ActivityPub does. ATProto is a workbench for building out large monolithic social networks, instead of the tapestry of communities that make up the Fediverse. ATProto seems to focus on individual data sovereignty, while the Fediverse is focused on community sovereignty. Unfortunately, yes, that makes the Fediverse a little harder to use than ATProto AppViews, but ultimately I think it's worth it.

I dunno. I've rambled about this kind of thing a lot of times in the past, sorry I keep bringing it up. :soft_shrug: Just something I enjoy thinking about.

  6. It looks more independent communities are coming to the Atmosphere.

"Latinsky and Medsky, brought to you by [Blacksky's] Acorn system, coming VERY soon..."

    bsky.app/profile/richferro.com

EDIT: It looks like this account requires you to be logged in. Sorry about that!

The post also mentions that more updates will be shared by bsky.app/profile/latinsky.soci and bsky.app/profile/medsky.network in the future.

  7. from what I read #Bluesky is going to overhaul their user interface to better reflect more than just the legacy social media on #ATProto and promote greater engagement (oh that thing). Heaven know what than means in practice.

  9. One thing I really like about ATProto/Atmosphere is the concept of a PDS, or Personal Data Server, storing all your account data.

The other day someone announced bookhive.buzz, basically ATProto take on bookwyrm.social, but unlike Bookwyrm, which requires you to create a separate account, Bookhive lets you log in with your PDS, most commonly your Bluesky account.

    That's actually pretty neat.

And we could have something similar with Federated Credential Management (FedCM).

Here's a GitHub issue requesting this for Mastodon:

  10. github.com/tellmeY18/at-rust-go is supposed to make it easyyy to build out Quality Apps on #atproto rn i've shelved the library project idea and am workin' on buildin' a social learning platform called changala github.com/changala-social/changala.app/ which is supposed to be similar to #tangled . instead of having git repo, changala will let you share collaborate and improve learning experience in terms of your college degree.

  11. #tangled is everything I wanted from a modern #git forge:

    - #atproto based (this is HUGE!)
    - European
    - Decentralized
    - Federated
    - Social with #vouching
    - Built with #golang and using a #permissive #MIT license

    What not to like there?

  12. I’m excited to announce that testing for ATP Nexus, the #Bluesky client app I developed, begins today.
    The app is available on #iOS, #iPadOS, #macOS, #visionOS and #watchOS.
You can join the program via TestFlight using the link below.

  13. Fedi bridge is so much better nowadays.

If someone replies to your post, who isn't bridged, you can now (no idea since when) reply via a web interface with your Fediverse account. In the past I was doing this with my Bluesky account.
So in theory you don't need a bluesky account anymore.

    That's amazing.

  19. Static #eportfolio sites for students would be nice, too (or #SolidProject pods or #ATProto PDS sites), at least for college students developing their professional identities. Combining that w/chat, social networking and #OpenBadges is a better foundation than building everything around an enterprise #LMS gradebook. Need better moderation and #E2EE privacy controls though. Have your students vibe code their own final exams in the meantime while Canvas is down ;)

  20. Self-hosting Wafrn behind another Caddy, with BlueSky support

I've wanted to self-host a way to post in one place and reach BlueSky, Mastodon, Lemmy, etc… for a while. Wafrn is it, but hosting can be fussy. Here's what I did.

The recommended deployment is probably easy; it's just a Docker container, and if given a whole server, or at least control of the whole web frontend there shouldn't be much to it. I wanted to run it on my existing VPS, which has a bunch of services running behind Nginx. The deployment instructions explain why that won't work easily; Wafrn relies on Caddy's automatic HTTPS for ATProto accounts.

Using the Caddy from Wafrn's container as a proxy is an option, but I really wanted the main web server to be separate. Fortunately, I had nothing against Caddy itself, and converting the Nginx config was a one-shot for an LLM tool.

Updating Wafrn to run in that configuration was not. I did use such a tool in that process, though it made enough errors along the way I think I may have been faster without it. I put the resulting fork up on Gitlab in case anyone else wants to do the same.

Two weeks into Automattic's Radical Speed Month, the WordPress.com Reader has grown a Mastodon tab, a Bluesky tab, and a Google Reader-compatible API. Here's what shipped, what's still to come, and how it connects back to the ActivityPub plugin.

  28. @evan considering the big drive currently building up on the #ATProto protocol, and given the proximity between AP and AT, would an #ActivityPubAPI service make any sense for #Bluesky / #Eurosky ?
