Sharing this! Wish I'm not late for #IETF126
Tangled found PDS doesn't fit well for contributions even with upcoming permissioned space spec.
So, we are planning to store record-like data outside of PDS, in Knot. This is a post explaining the reasons & upstream spec change we need.

I dunno if this is a big deal to anybody else, but it's huge for me. It's the culmination of everything I've been working on this year. The game dev feeds and labeler, HappyView, Pentaract, Cartridge... it's all been for this.
I am SO excited to release soon and start onboarding studios. 😎

Y'ALL OMGOMGOMGOMG
I just did the first full, successful game migration for a @[email protected] game record via @[email protected]. I am OVER THE FUCKING MOON right now. 🥳
God, I've been working toward making this possible (and easy!) for so long. Like... pre-AtmosphereConf.

I don't *want* to run a PDS but it solves the "Sign Up" issue easily.
(should this be a discussion on discourse.atprotocol.community/ #atproto)
ATProtocol Community -
I'm willing to add things to encourage it like:
- restricting client logins
- restricting what lexicons are permitted to be written/accessed
- setting storage limits
People don't migrate if they don't have a reason. But the thing is, WHERE do they migrate to? #atproto -
I keep getting the feeling that running my own PDS for my services is the only durable way for folks who aren't #ATProto -pilled to get into things. Like migration from PDS to PDS being relatively easy is enough of an anchor to do so.

📝 Self hosting a PDS isn't hard (so far) #development #webdev #tech #atproto #bluesky
Due to my compulsive need to self-host whatever I possibly can, I decided to set up a self-hosted PDS. All that's on it so far is my Bluesky profile data, but it was a surprisingly painless process.

@riyo.skyphone.social a solo developer from Japan 🇯🇵 builds - all by himself - SkyPhone Social, a multilingual social network app that connects people through translation. Posts are automatically translated into the recipient's language. Compatible with Bluesky #atproto. Impressive!

Huh, interesting. Bluesky the company trademarked the name of "AT Protocol" as "primarily a defensive measure" against abuse.
Going forward, "most everyday use cases [won't] require a license".

My personal site will be /ridiculously/ atmospheric within the next few days.
- rebuilt with Astro
- static build (ditch my old blog CMS for Markdown)
- swap my custom standard.site publishing for Sequoia
- deploy with wisp.place
Lots of work, but I am excite. 😎

I'll be playing in this! Make sure to come hang out! 🥰

Is my ATProto app actually decentralized?
A few days ago I wrote about rolld, the little board game tracker I built on the AT Protocol. As I mentioned then, this is very much a learning experiment for me, a way to play with ATProto and learn about it. In this post, I'd like to come back to a few of my struggles and the things I learned while designing it. -
New blog post time, it's a quickie. The tl;dr is now my site is on the Atmosphere, Bluesky/ATProto's network.
-
Just added the Atmosphere plugin to my WordPress setup. IT was THAT easy and painless to add, lol. Now my posts will be saved on my PDS, neat.

An article can be made directly boostable with #ActivityPub. I call it #APnative and WordPress and Ghost already allow us to publish that way. I desperately want this to happen with podcasts too. Perhaps such that we use AP in addition or instead of RSS as the base of the format.
Can content that works with #ATproto live outside of a PDS? (I'm not sure I'm even asking the question correctly)

"AT Protocol is not #Bluesky…
The reason I draw your attention to this distinction is because #ATProto has interesting properties, notably in how it supports #pluggable #identity that doesn't depend on the server you use… This puts power in the hands of the #users and not in those of #serveradmins. It means that you can always guarantee credible exit, you cannot get locked in. By default, email-style federation is subject to capture, and indeed email is captured."

I moved my Bluesky account to Eurosky. It was the most technical thing I have done since updating DNS records, honestly 😅 I had to deal with migrator tools, DIDs, rotation keys, recovery keys, Migration Tokens, typing in my old password, new password, old handle, new handle, "PDS Mover - Missing Blobs Importer"...
There are explanations like "do not close this page!" and "monitor your email!" and "If you're wondering what 'blobs' are, that is simply what media files are called on the AT Protocol, the network that includes Bluesky, Eurosky and others."
For me as a nerd, things like these are naturally part of everyday life, just like setting up DNS records or configuring services, installing servers and infrastructures, programming and so on. But they said mAsToD0n iS diFfIcUlt wHaT is A sErVeR sO cOmPLIcaTed?!! Moving a Mastodon account from one instance to another seems like a walk in the park in comparison. My mom would not know how to migrate a Bluesky account to Europe.

What's this fabled "For You" feed or for me thread that folks in #atproto talk about? I want to check out the non-chronological options (but I am curious about tuning)
