  1. RE: mastodon.social/@ieeespectrum/

“When a #satellite demises, it's still there in the #atmosphere in the form of small particles of #aluminum, and we don’t know what these particles actually do in the atmosphere.” Most of this destruction happens at altitudes between 60 and 80 kilometers—too high for balloons 🎈 and planes to reach, but too low for satellites to sample.

He cannot go to #Mars. The #science#NASA's own science — proves it. The #radiation kills the crew in transit. The #planet cannot support life and never will. Every attempt poisons this #atmosphere a little more. Every #rocket makes #Earth less survivable for people who never consented to the experiment.

He has been promising Mars since 2016. He has been collecting #government #money since 2002. He has missed every single launch window while ...

  3. The Programmer’s Fulcrum 14 August, 2026

This post originally appeared on The Fulcrum. Welcome to this week's The Programmer's Fulcrum. It's your weekly curation of the essential news in the Open Media Network and Open Social development communities with a focus on devastating big tech via Techno Anarchism. As usual, we aim to provide actionable content you can use to destroy Techno Feudalism each week. It has the additional benefit of weakening authoritarianism. IMHO, the best way to do that is to use tools from the Techno […]

  4. Scientists turn #Starlink into a giant scanner for #Earth’s upper #atmosphere
A new way to “see” Earth’s elusive upper atmosphere could help make increasingly crowded orbits safer.
Using orbital data from roughly 1,200 Starlink satellites, they reconstructed changes in atmospheric density about 500 kilometers above Earth. The approach could sharpen #satellite tracking and help reduce the growing risk of collisions in increasingly crowded orbits. sciencedaily.com/releases/2026 #space

  5. @jeremycorbyn Earth's greatest enemy is the #extraction & #burning of #fossilfuels, Jeremy, which has resulted in there being more #CO2 in the #atmosphere now than at any time in the past 3.25 million years - not since the Pliocene Epoch. The only reason we don't have the climatic conditions that prevailed at that time is because of #airpollution, & that is being reduced. You need to take #globalwarming more seriously!

  6. CONTRAIL SHADOW

Aircraft flying at about 10 km altitude produces contrail (condensation trail). It reflects shadow on the broken clouds at about 2500-3000 m height.

  7. TIL about "Atmosphere", the AT Protocol-based European network of services and apps. There's mu (the cool place?), Colibri (to build communities), Tangled (GitHub-like), and many others. I feel lost. But that's cool.

  8. You can also tell them that Bluesky will likely fold in about a year or two.

At that point they will have a few options.

    - Move to the next VC-backed social media platform. This will definitely turn out differently this time!
    - Pick a PDS *and* an AppView *and* an app (if there are any still running)
    - Pick a server, follow anyone.

    Should be an easy choice!

  9. Quick, Bluesky is down, tell your friends about your favorite fediverse server!

Don't confuse them with techy jargon, unless they care about that stuff. Just tell them why you picked the server you're on, and that they can sign up and follow and talk to people on other servers.

  10. Oh wow, a spectacular example of election misinformation on Bluesky.  Their #1 trending topic right now ("Farage wins Clacton seat") is a lie: the polls are still open for hours.

Eurosky's mu.social also reports the misinformation; blacksky.community, by contrast, doesn't. Yet another win for Blacksky trust & safety!

  12. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🔭❄️ Where you land on #Mars depends on where the #water is, since buried ice is both drinkable water and the feedstock for rocket fuel. Mars keeps #its ice at the poles where #solar power fails, and the equatorial ice has long since vanished into the thin #atmosphere.

  13. Oh look, another stupid ultra-wealthy-person idea*

#Musk wants #SpaceX to put 1 million extra-large #DataCenter satellites w/ ~"higher quantities of polluting propellant" & "much larger amount of metals vaporizing in Earth's atmosphere during reentry" into orbit.

Amazon & Blue Origin have similar ideas. The number of #satellites launched & reentering #atmosphere "will increase 100 times" compared to today 👀

  14. I’ve re-enabled #federation on my blog – follow @blog on the #fediverse! Next, to figure out how to make it work on #Bluesky, ideally with its own #ATmosphere handle like (@)blog.rafelangston.com… 🤔

    @matt / @snarfed.org Suggestions?

  15. Elon, or data sovereignty, will never work. It never did, so why are you still using the same approach 20 years later?

Want to make a dent against walled gardens? Get Pacific-Asia into the open #SocialWeb.

So much untapped network power & influence.

  16. The point is, the open #SocialWeb is not tapping the proper crowd. The largest SNS / Social Media crowd is in Pacific-Asia (CJKM, ASEAN).

You can only reach this crowd by sponsoring Kdramas, Jdramas, Cdramas, Pdramas / Teleresyes, Tdrama / ThaiDramas, and so on.

    Talking about privacy, Meta,

  17. Here's yet another way.

Bluesky PBC, or someone with funds, should buy PPL (Product Placement) spots in popular Kdramas.

Watch how the ATmosphere network, and the open Social Web in general, grows.
